CRED's mission is to achieve transformational reduction in Chicago’s gun violence.
About us
Chicago CRED (Creating Real Economic Destiny) was created in 2016 by Emerson Collective, a social impact organization founded and run by Laurene Powell Jobs, along with former U.S. Education Secretary and Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan. We believe the best solution for ending gun violence is recruiting men most likely to be perpetrators or victims of shootings and transition them to jobs in the legal economy that pay as much or more than what they earn in the violence-plagued illegal economy.

Recently, Matt DeMateo from New Life Centers facilitated an insightful panel featuring incredible leaders: Dominique McCord from Metropolitan Peace Initiatives, Benny Estrada from New Life, Jalon Arthur from Chicago CRED, Esther Franco-Payne from the Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities, and Father Greg Boyle from Homeboy Industries. The focus was on Community Violence Intervention (CVI) — exploring both the challenges and opportunities we face. Together, they shared valuable lessons and strategies to make our communities safer and more peaceful.

Chicago Aldermen and community leaders have urged Mayor Brandon Johnson to reactivate the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system until a permanent solution is implemented. They are prepared to fund $2.5 million of the annual $9.6 million cost during this interim period. “People are dying because ShotSpotter is shut down, and first responders are not being notified about shootings,” stated 17th Ward Alderman David Moore at a City Hall press conference, surrounded by colleagues and community members. Bob Boik, Senior Vice-President for Public Safety at the Civic Committee, emphasized that ShotSpotter can speed response times and save lives, expressing concern over a potential service gap. Father Michael Pfleger and other leaders attended the press conference, highlighting the importance of ShotSpotter in a city where trust in police is low. Pfleger stressed the need for this tool to combat rising gun violence, stating, “It’s unconscionable to remove a tool that saves lives.” https://lnkd.in/dBTSnAmB

Chicago, IL — On Wednesday, September 25th, the Chicago Violence Intervention (CVI) community came together with legislators for the Chicago CRED 2024 Legislative Reception, a vital event dedicated to fostering dialogue and collaboration on preventative measures to reduce gun violence in the city. Pastor Marshall Hatch Sr., leader of New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, has long been a force in faith-based initiatives on Chicago’s West Side, while Hatch Jr. builds on this legacy through youth advocacy and empowerment (The Maafa Redemption Project). Beautiful. Profound. Joy. These are the words I use to describe the story of Chicago CRED. CRED's mission is to reduce gun violence. For the last 3 years I've had the pleasure of being a camera operator at the organization's annual graduation. At a certain point each year my thoughts drift to my cousin who was murdered in 2017, a victim of gun violence. As the clouds of grief creep in, being present at the graduation reminds me: Weeping may endure for a night, but JOY COMETH in the morning. Thank you Chicago CRED for the work that you do, lives are being changed and saved. (Arne Duncan, Monica Guerrero, Paul Robinson, Sherry McAdoo-Champion, Emerson Collective) I'm grateful to be a part of the ceremony. I look forward to the story of Chicago CRED being one of the first projects developed and streamed on Museum Culture Network. Thank you Kevin G. Gist for bringing me on. Thank you Brooke Collins for the use of your photos.
