✨🎄 Christmas at the French Embassy 🎄✨ The French Embassy in Washington, DC, was thrilled to be included in “Christmas on Embassy Row: Inside DC's international holiday festivities,” a special feature aired by NBC. It was a chance to share France’s rich year-end holiday traditions and to mark a historic anniversary: the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette’s farewell tour of the United States in 1824. A key figure during the American Revolution and a symbol of French-American friendship, the Marquis de Lafayette was honored at a historical reenactment attended by U.S. veterans and dignitaries. Guests also received a special souvenir celebrating the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral, a symbol of resilience and international unity. Many thanks to NBC 4 Washington Brand Studio for highlighting this special event. 📹 Step back in time with us to the Marquis de Lafayette’s Farewell Tour! On December 10th, we hosted a special evening at the French Ambassador’s Residence, re-enacting Lafayette’s historic visit to Washington, D.C., where he addressed Congress as the ‘Guest of the Nation’ in 1824. A huge thank you to the incredible Mark Schneider for his moving portrayal of Lafayette, and to Steve Rochlin, Stephen Seals, Chris Melhuish, the Sons of the American Revolution, and all those who brought history to life with such passion. Special thanks to Maya Clarkson, her team, and Hanalei, the magnificent horse who helped make this moment unforgettable. We are deeply grateful to Chuck Schwan, the American Friends of Lafayette and experts Vincent Bouat-Ferlier and Kenneth Cohen for their contributions to crafting a script faithful to history. And of course, thank you to Vibes, led by Carlos Beaumont, for creating the perfect ambiance for this evening of celebration. This event was a testament to the enduring Franco-American friendship—two nations united by shared values and a commitment to liberty. As we close the year, we wish everyone a joyful holiday season and look forward to continuing this cherished partnership in 2025. ✨ Enjoy the full reenactment! ✨ https://lnkd.in/eXF5um-M

The best way to experience history is up close and in person. At a ceremony at the US Capitol commemorating the Farewell Tour of the Marquis de Lafayette and at a special reception at the Ambassador's Residence, we had the joy of welcoming Vincent Bouat-Ferlier, Director of the Chambrun Foundation, who brought a host of artifacts from the Revolutionary General's home in France. From the original copy of Lafayette's speech to Congress, to President James Monroe's invitation to the Marquis to return to the US, to memorabilia commemorating the visit, to a leaf portrait designed by an adopted member of the Washington's family, these pieces gave a weight and a realness to the commemorations. Vincent's work at the Chambrun Foundation ensures the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of Lafayette’s château, while classifying, enriching, and promoting the invaluable archives of the General and his family. These efforts not only protect a significant chapter of both French and American history but also illuminate Lafayette’s remarkable life, his unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and his lasting influence on both sides of the Atlantic. The New Frederick Douglass Bridge shined in the colors of the French flag in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Farewell Tour of the Marquis de Lafayette and of his address to a joint session of Congress. This was a moving tribute to a man who was foundational to establishing the 🇫🇷🇺🇸 alliance, as well as a nod to the abolitionist views held by both the Marquis de Lafayette and Frederick Douglass. Douglass wrote about the Marquis and one of his Revolutionary brothers-in-arms, James Armistead Lafayette–an African American man who the Marquis later helped free–and used these two men and others as examples to advocate for the allowance of Black soldiers in the Civil War. He wanted to remind the leaders of the Union that African American soldiers had fought for the creation of this country alongside Washington and Lafayette and that they should be allowed to fight for its preservation and reunification. The French-American tapestry is incredibly intricate. Consulat général de France à Washington, DC The New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge #Lafayette #Lafayette200
