HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings chapter of the TeamMates Mentoring program celebrated their 25th anniversary with a tailgate on Thursday.

Community members gathered with the board members of TeamMates Mentoring to enjoy food and fun while celebrating the impact the program has on the community.

“Those mentors just meet with those students every week and are a consistent support in their life and what we’ve seen from that is students’ grades improve, their attendance, all sorts of things but most importantly their sense of hope,” Program Coordinator, Miranda Schumacher. “They say they feel more hopeful because of their mentor, and that’s what we’re all about is increasing that sense of hope and making a brighter future for Hastings.”

Schumacher said it’s more than the kids feeling the impact of the program.

“It’s so important for students but for mentors specifically they also report feeling more engaged, more hopeful because you go thinking you’re going to help this student and have such a big impact on them, and you do, but often times a student has just as big of an impact on you,” said Schumacher. “You feel like you’re making a difference in the community, you’re impacting like I said the future of Hastings by creating strong, independent students who will grow up to be successful.”
