Police and forensic teams called to possible suspicious activity near woodland off A227 Gravesend Road between Vigo Hill and Fairseat Lane

Forensic teams and police officers are still investigating “an unusual appearance of soil” in woodland, but a key road has now re-opened.

The force received a report of possible suspicious activity just off the A227 Gravesend Road, between Vigo and Wrotham, at around 11.45am yesterday (February 2).

A police spokesman said experts were “currently analysing an unusual appearance of the soil in nearby woodland”.

The road was closed between Fairseat Lane and Vigo Hill for over 30 hours, but has been reopened this evening, Monday, shortly after 6pm.

Motorists had been obliged to take long diversions via the A20, A228, M2 and A227, which caused some considerable delays.

The woodland is part of the North Downs and near a number of footpaths and a byway, including the ancient Pilgrims Way.
