Darren Kennedy: Get the inside track on TikTok's viral decor trends
Whether it’s bold maximalism or cottagecore charm, there’s something to suit everyone's style
TikTok is an unlikely yet powerful source of interior design inspiration, offering everything from stunning new aesthetics to clever furniture hacks and simple DIY projects. Recently, interior design trends have been born on the platform itself. These are micro-trends sparked by just a few videos, which have then snowballed into fully fledged styles. Only time will tell which of these trends have staying power, but for now they offer some nice inspiration.
Bookshelf wealth, one of my favourite TikTok trends, is almost an anti-trend, as it celebrates lived-in homes that aren’t meticulously photo-ready. Instead, this trend highlights shelves that reflect the homeowner’s unique tastes and cherished possessions collected over time.
To achieve this look, arrange your books both horizontally and vertically for visual interest. Add decorative objects like vintage bookends, gold accents, and lush plants to enhance a sense of richness. Incorporate art pieces or framed photos to add a personal touch. The goal is to create a bookshelf that feels thoughtfully curated and aesthetically pleasing. This trend is very accessible and a great one for anyone who doesn’t own their own home but wants to add a personal touch.
TikTok has embraced maximalism, a style characterised by bold colours, mixed patterns, and an eclectic blend of decor. Start by choosing a vibrant colour palette. Think jewel tones, like emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red. Mix these with patterns such as floral wallpapers, geometric rugs, or bohemian tapestries.
Layering is key in maximalism. Combine various textures — velvet cushions, fur throws, and silk drapes — to create a rich, luxurious feel. Mix everything from vintage trinkets to modern art pieces.
Cottagecore is a nostalgic nod to rural life that has captivated TikTok users. This trend is all about embracing simplicity and comfort. Start by adding cosy textiles — knitted blankets, cushions, and floral curtains.
Colour-wise, opt for soft, muted tones like sage green, blush pink, and warm beige. Furniture should be functional yet charming, so consider things like a distressed-wood dining table, a well-worn leather armchair, or an iron bedframe. Finally, decorate with vintage items and charity-shop finds that evoke countryside living, such as ceramic pitchers, woven baskets, and botanical prints.
