Road House (2024)
As good as it gets
I'm surprised there are so many haters. I have no allegiance to anyone in this film and purely looking at this as an entrant in the action thriller genre. I'd probably give it a 7.5 but given I can't do that I'll round up to an eight. The acting is good, story is a lot of fun, fight scenes seem quite authentic, there's a love interest and it also tugs on the heart strings a bit. There are a few incredulous moments but compared to the latest mission impossible (2023) it was 10x less. If you don't like graphic and realistic violence I don't think this is for you. If you don't want to see people get hurt or killed, pick another film. But if you want good action at a nice pace with some backstory and character development then I think this is for you.
Nope (2022)
Layers and layers in this amazing film
This film has quickly become one of my favorites of all time. It's not just the topic which I find interesting, it's the attention to detail and depth of the film that really pulled me in. This is one of those films that you can watch over and over a dozen or more times and I promise, each time you will learn at least one new thing. I think watching with captions on added another layer because sometimes the captions would reference sounds or phrases I couldn't hear myself. The acting was really amazing as well. Every character had a strong presence, especially Gordy. You may not understand this film the first time, give it a chance and another and another and you will observe greatness. M.
Diablo (2015)
Much better than the ratings suggest
The acting was fine. The direction was fine. The cinematography was spectacular. There was mystery and suspense and twists and turns. An overall satisfying experience. It's true some scenes are contrived and a bit over the top. Also the twist is much easier to figure out than we want. But it's still a good film. And for scott Eastwood to get this kind of film early in his career is actually a good thing. He should be proud. There are a lot more seasoned actors with big budgets doing much crappier work that this film, so they should all get some kudos. Some of their casting choices were a bit off though, if you are doing to represent Mexicans why not just get Mexican actors instead of white actors, that's lame.
Torn Hearts (2022)
This was great
I'm inflating the rating a bit, I'd really give it a 6 but I want others to see this movie and the current rating is 5.1 which is very harsh. This movie has a slow building tension and some very moody scenes. I was impressed it didn't feel slow at all and the pace was good. The acting was top notch and very believable performances. There was suspense and some gore so it should be considered a horror but it's not very scary by the typical definition. The ending was satisfying and there are some nice twists and turns all along the way as the story is unfolding. If you want a decent horror/thriller I would recommend this!
Blair Witch (2016)
Much better than the ratings suggest
This movie could have been a standalone horror. There is very little value in the previous two movies relating to this one. In that sense, don't worry about watching any of the other movies. This film was solid, the acting was good, use of found footage was quite excellent with unique camera moments. The special effects were perfectly balanced and I was scared!!! I would highly suggest watching this on a night when you want to be scared. The best character for me was the main girl, she was very convincing. I really don't understand why a movie this good could get a 5/10 rating. It's much better than that!
The Black Phone (2021)
Excellent
Really suspenseful. Not very predictable. Reminds me a little of the Lovely Bones but it's more scary. The main kid actors are the heart of the movie, Ethan Hawks is barely in the movie. This kid is going to be a huge star.
Prey (2022)
Best predator film yet
This was by far my favorite of all the predator films. The acting was great, story, direction, action scenes. I've already watched it twice and I never watch movies multiple times. I picked up a few nuanced detailed the second time too. I would highly recommend this, it should be ranked higher in IMDB too!
The Retreat (2020)
It's true, this is confusing; but it's still good
The acting and direction seem fine. The issue is really we just don't know what's going on and there's too much room for interpretation. Overall it kept me thinking and curious so I'd say it was not a waste of time.
Bloodthirsty (2020)
Surprisingly good
These reviews are way too low. The acting is good. Writing good. Direction good. It's not totally predictable either. I think this is at least a 6 out of 10.
Gold (2022)
It has its moments
The acting and directing is top notch. Zac Efron holds the entire movie. You really believe what he's going through. The movie has sufficient twists and turns and event a twist in the end. Overall I didn't feel very satisfied with the ending and wanted more. I felt like "what was the point" after going through this whole ordeal with the main character.
Butchers (2020)
Solid B level horror
This was nothing innovative or special but the acting was decent and overall quality of film was high. I would recommend it if you have nothing better to watch. People that give this a 1 star are not being practical given all the junk out there these days.
The 355 (2022)
It's better than what most reviews say
I thought this was about as good as any recent spy action thriller. Good action, plot twists and ending. It's a bit predictable and formulaic and not very believable in many parts. Overall pretty entertaining.
The Terminal List (2022)
Very well done
This series is exceptionally well done. There is a really great story and intricate plot. There are many tense situations and fast paced action scenes. I was really blown away.
The Ledge (2022)
Definitely entertaining
Acting was good, script was good, climbing scenes were very intense. Overall, I was quite impressed and surprised by the low reviews. With all the garbage out there these days I thought this stood above all the rest, by a lot. It's nothing to write home about but if you're bored and don't know what to watch I'm pretty sure you'll find this entertaining.
The Card Counter (2021)
Great movie but depressing
I would rate this movie higher but I just feel it's too depressing. I was really engaged in the characters and story. It was uplifting for a while but then I was just sad.
Coherence (2013)
Pretty well done
Story is interesting, consistent and unique. They took complex topics and made them accessible throughout the film. There were some very tense and scary moments too. It's not a horror but much of this seems like something that could actually happen in reality which makes it scary.
Open Water 3: Cage Dive (2017)
This was really terrifying, just skip the first 20 minutes
This movie is well done and absolutely terrifying and stressful. I think the bad reviews are really because the first third of the movie is super boring and we care nothing for these characters/actors. Once the action begins though it's a non stop thrill ride, my heart was pounding and there were many unpredictable moments. If you can any a tense thriller check it out.
Honeydew (2020)
Surprising and unique
A 7 is way too generous for this film but I want to help it get more viewers. The film is not for everyone but if you like a slow burning and atmospheric horror this is a good choice. The acting and cinematography were totally fine, this was not a B movie in that sense. How they use music, build tension and unlock little surprises was a unique experience. I would never recommend people go watch this or say it's a "good" movie, but, if you're like me and you stumble upon it with nothing else to watch I'd definitely give it a try. Most true horror fans will think this is entertaining.
Josie Jane: Kill the Babysitter (2020)
This was great
It was kind of a B movie but it has some unique moments. Surprised by the low reviews, most people will like this on a rainy day. Normally I'd give it a 6 but to help it out I'll up it to a 7.
Antlers (2021)
Really well done and surprising
I avoided this movie for a while because I thought the 5.9 rating was not up to the mark. I'm glad I took a chance. This movie really packs a punch. There's no wasted time or fluff. The story is clear and there are some twists and turns. Also the cinematography and overall ambience was really good.
Archive 81 (2022)
This is quite good
I was surprised how good this was. The story is pretty original and the acting is great. There are some nice scares but it's much more of a slow brooding build up. Without spoilers this body of work kind of reminds me of a more scary stranger things.
Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)
Surprising and impressive
This movie is for people that like crazy trippy horror and supernatural stories. It also has a ton of gore. All that said, it was one of the most unique shows I've seen in years. The story and acting was so good. The main characters were so well played. I was hooked to see what would happen. I also had to turn away at some of the excessive gore. All that said, with so many cookie cutter and unoriginal shows out there this was truly a gem and remarkable.
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)
Kind of slow but worth it
The story is really quite good. I was pretty impressed with the execution as well. This movie stands on its own and has just the right amount of twists and turns.
Intrusion (2021)
These reviews are very unfair
This movie reminds me a lot of Gothika with Halle berry. The low 5.2 rating doesn't do this movie justice. The lead actress is incredible and the plot is engaging. It's true there is nothing original but if we judge the movie on its own merit it should be at least a 6.0.
The Unforgivable (2021)
This is a legit good film
Great acting, plot, characters and direction. There's a lot to like in this film and even some twists and turns you don't expect. Netflix puts out a lot of garbage but this is a top notch film. Sandra Bullock is at the top of her game still.
