I haven't seen the original neither have I read the book. But this movie was filmed in 2020 so I expected to watch a movie that is appropriate for 2020. I can say nothing about how it lacks all it's gothic or mysterious atmosphere. But it definitely lacks logic. Why was this girl so persistent in making herself miserable living with abusive husband, abusive maid, being gaslighted in someone else's home? She was orphaned just 2 years ago so no explanation there. She had a job before she met her husband, so not there as well. Why? I really want to know. And if it's just a story about that anyone can became the victim of abuse, ok, fine, tell me the story. But nope, I'm not getting it. You can't call a film "romantic" or "ghost " story and give us an abuse story instead without explaining everything at all...
