Mirzapur (2018)
Season 3 is utter trash!!
My rating for the entire series dropped significantly after watching season 3. Season 1 was top notch, Season 2 was watchable. Season 3 is utter trash with extremely boring and inconsequential sub plots. Pankaj tripathi has no presence, Shwetha bores you to death - she's the most unfit for the role in the entire series. With the unforgettable bad boy Munna's death in Season 2, macho man's Guddus role is wasted with petty scenes. Jail scenes with Guddus father are worth skipping entirely. Sarad Shukla character is total BS, he neither knows to act nor his role is interesting. The never ending CM/ political scenes have no meaning whatsoever. Last but not the least in terms of criticism, is the mega boring Bihari family with twins and a dwarf father make you hate this series so much that you longer want to wait for any more seasons ever. My rating was 9/10 until season 2. Season 3 is just a disappointment after waiting for so many years. We can call this once gem of a series good bye.
Yegire Pavurama (1997)
Breezy musical entertainment from the 90s!
I grew up watching such movies and this feature film was one the best from SV Krishna Reddy direction. Not many directors have a grip on all crafts of moving making, but he is one of those multi talented directors who knew to compose melodious music also. One thing any modern directors can learn from him is the pleasant language used in the movie with meaningful analogies and adding cultural values in screenplay. There were many occasions in the movie where a character could have gone overboard, be it Srikanth not behaving selfish with the old lady, Suhasini handling a pervert husband, JD Chakravarthy compromising after reflecting on his naive aggressive behavior and so on. But the director handles it subtly with dignity. The music of this movie was the ultimate selling point for audience to rush to the theatres. Kudos to the makers of true Telugu cinema back in the 90s. You don't need high production values for a meaningful cinema, just impactful story and music is good enough.
Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014)
What a movie! Simply superb!
One of the hidden gems for sure. Every single actor has performed incredibly well. Excellent example to show happiness is in enjoying simple things in life. This movie is full of love and affection. People who complain and crib about everything cannot find love anywhere. People who care for others always find love in almost everything. There's very little plot but it's a joyful emotional ride. It will remind us of our innocent childhood especially if you are an 80s or 90s kid. Director of this movie is a monk who knows true value of life. Vijay sethupathi is a fantastic actor and kudos to entire team for creating heart touching cinema. Lovely movie!
Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024)
Definitely worth watching!! Pros and Cons of owning a robot!
Firstly, glad to see a new subject like this explored in Hindi movies. They had to dumb it down in the second half to appeal to the masses with wedding backdrop, songs and silly comedy. The director finally gets to the point with the advantages and dangers of AI. Humans need robots for mechanical support not for emotional support. Similar to what we learnt about social media, it's great to spread information and connect to the world with internet but the world is not going to come to your rescue all times, you need close family and friends. Finally, using technology responsibly is super important without getting carried away. Great attempt, hope this becomes a success so that makers can think of innovative scripts in the future. Say good bye to typical masala pop corn movies!
World Famous Lover (2020)
Terrible movie!! Only one subplot watchable!!
Pitch poor direction, there is no story whatsoever. The protagonist writes whatever he wants and we as viewers are taken for granted. No wonder this was a colossal disaster in all aspects. Vijay should have rejected this movie outright. If there is an award for worst movies of the decade, this director deserves one nomination. They tried to inject Arjun Reddy kind of aggressive scenes to attract audience but it all looks so artificial. Rashi khanna overacts, Aishwarya was a treat to watch. Vijay is good in parts. The other love interests of his are terrible. Music is forgetful. The scene where his dad breaks his leg and needs to rush to hospital has turned out to be so poor that even the editor of the movie didn't catch that poor performance.
Dil Se.. (1998)
What a movie! Mani Ratnam is extraordinary director!
Shah Rukh was at his prime of his career and he made the right decision to sign a film with one of the best directors in the country at that time. I remember watching this movie first day in a theater and I was shocked to see the glacial occupancy. Firstly this movie is stupendously complex. A very fine piece of cinema that was 20-30 years ahead of its time. Had it been made now, it would have been a box office success for sheer story telling, music, background score and acting. Chayya chayya song is still my fav song after so many decades. This movie needs a special appreciation to AR Rahman. His work is impeccable for this complex drama. The genre of the movie changes in the last 45 mins and that's where we need a lot of maturity to understand what Director is trying to tell. As a citizen saving the nation is superior thought in comparison to saving your love. The protagonist not only saves the nation but chooses to die with his love. Who can even think of such a script ? Salute to Mani Ratnam. His work will remain in history books for eternity.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023)
Felt like watching Star Plus TV series, but passable!!
Positives: So Karan Johar gets inspired by Rajamouli's huge sets/ statues and Crazy Rich Asians grandeur, clearly evident and nicely done. He sticks to his genre and strengths, love and relationships - nicely done. Ensures there is no casting biases, no nepotism and relies heavily on legendary actors like Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, Jaya Bacchhan, fair enough. Ranveer and Alia the proven actor couple don't go overboard and keep it nice and real - pretty pretty good.
Not so positives: Between all this goodness, there is a feeling I get as though I am watching a TV soap drama with my wife at home. The never ending references to classic Hindi music songs at almost every stage. Men definitely have opportunities for multiple cigarette breaks.
Overall there is heart and soul in this movie, but is today's audience up for this kind of movie ? Only time will tell.
Dhamaka (2022)
Watch it only for Srileela and Raviteja dance numbers!
Srileela is a great find for Telugu film industry. She dances like a dream. We all know how good a dancer Sai Pallavi is. But Srileela is the new superstar who will set the stage on fire if you give her chartbuster songs to dance. Raviteja never runs out of energy. I can't believe he's able to deliver time and again even with poor scripts. He's one underdog who always comes back strong. An inspiration for next generation actors. This movie is watchable only for songs. The villains are silly and stupid just want to kill the high performing corporate CEOs who are not ready to sell their company. Shows the IQ of the Director. No logic only songs magic.
A Man Called Otto (2022)
A honest soulful drama that we missed lately!!
Needless to say how good an actor Tom Hanks is. He is the heart and soul of this movie. It took us back to the days of Forrest Gump reminding us of true American spirit. The message to today's audience is to stay connected with people around you. To spread love, to be helpful to each other, to share both happiness and sorrow. The thing the stood out particularly to me was the relationship of Otto with his neighbors. It all started off grumpy but deep inside we get to see a wonderful human being. His chemistry with the Mexican neighbor is so refreshing that it brings a purpose to his otherwise boring life. This is what the modern day neighbors including me should learn. To be approachable, to be friendly, to try help each other out. After all life is short, let's keep our egos aside. Kudos to the makers and the great actors in this wonderful piece of work.
Kantara (2022)
I am spellbound after watching this sincere cinema!
I am left speechless after watching epic cinematography and story telling backed by wonderful performances & background score. The world created in this movie is truly magnificent. Rishab Shetty my goodness has delivered a performance that is beyond anyones expectation. This will remain as a gem in the South Indian cinema. Mostly importantly a proud Kannada movie that will stand out for many years to come. This will be a stepping stone to many more movies to come in the next generation. There's not a single scene that makes you feel bored and this is captivating stuff. I hope they don't make another part and ruin this gem. Let it remain as single movie.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
Must watch documentary for all ages! Fascinating narration!
First of all the narrator Mr. Neil Tyson makes this journey of space exploration fascinating with his charm and enthusiasm. The show is just splendid which makes us think and contemplate everything we see and sense.
A tribute all the great scientists who contributed their entire life in invention and discovery without which we wouldn't enjoy the modern day technologies. I think a show of this sort should be watched every few years to keep us grounded and persevere for more knowledge. Salute to the makers of this show, it's truly a piece of work. Wish there was a season 2. Can't wait for it...
Jug Jugg Jeeyo (2022)
Decent drama! Worth a watch!
Routine relationship drama packaged with good music, comedy and well directed awkward scenes that happen in every household. Every dramatic emotion needs to be expressed within four walls. There's one scene a son insults his father publicly. This should not be an example for anyone. No matter how bad your parents are, they deserve respect even if you don't like them. That's a lesson we should all learn from this movie!
Udta Punjab (2016)
What a movie! Splendid team work!
First of all - salute to all lead actors. Shahid and Alia are in top form. What a gripping plot. Top notch movie. Direction and screenplay is perfect. Music is apt for the story.
Major (2022)
Over dramatization and substandard narration!!
With due respect to the great real life warrior Sandeep Unnikrishnan. I wonder why this movie has high rating here. Biopics don't need to be action packed and hero centric. We just need facts not exaggerated drama. The makers are cashing in on patriotism. Hotel Mumbai was so captivating in terms of narration. This movie is all about hero and his stunts. What a slog!
Virata Parvam (2022)
Great attempt but plot has some glaring flaws
Firstly the production values are top notch! Commendable performances from Sai Pallavi and Rana. But the plot doesn't have a strong point to prove. Bad misunderstanding and lack of depth in character. Anyway, a story of this sort had to be told.
Revolutionary Road (2008)
Complicated and disturbed minds in a perfectly nice world
One of the most complex dramas one can come across in a very simple plot. Leonardo and Kate nail it with one of the career best performances. Kate portrays a complex and disturbed character and is cold. Leonardo gave his best performance as an absolutely helpless man. His scenes with frustrated Kate and some uninvited guests are absolute gold standard to watch. As an Actor he has a ton of box office successes in his bag. To me, this is his best work despite being a depressing drama. That smile he wears on his face with a million thoughts in his mind shows he's born to act. That haunting piano background score is impeccable. Superb movie!
Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)
Kamatipura kamatipura kamatipura every other word.
Alia wants to do a Bacchchan act.. but the entire movie is shot in a set that looks made up .. too hard to picture this as a reality .. even OTT watch was a slog.
DJ Tillu (2022)
Hidden talent is out in the form of Siddu!!
Siddu single handedly carries this crime comedy with ease. This innocent Telangana dialect is hilarious throughout. Wish him and the team for more good stuff in the future. Perfect stress relieving movie for family audience.
Aapathbandavudu (1992)
Stupendous performance by Chiranjeevi!!
One of the career best performances by the living legend of Telugu Cinema - Chiranjeevi. You can't spot an ounce of Megastar in this movie. That's the respect he has for K Vishwanath Sir. He completely immersed himself into the character portraying wide range of emotions. His acting in the church scene and the one in front of the mirror is simply of the highest class. Now this movie is also a reason why Chiranjeevi stopped taking up classy roles because it was a box office dud. The movie is a treat to watch for the most part. But the audience imagined him to dance to catchy numbers, fight with goons, show heroism with stereotypical content. This was a tough pill for Chiru to swallow. It hurts when a movie of this caliber didn't get the appreciation it deserved. I watch this movie every few years to realize how good Chiru was. SP Balasubramanyam Sir always wanted Chiru to do such roles but he didn't quite understand what pain Chiru and his true fans went through after seeing such a stellar performance going unnoticed. Wish we had audience to explore the talent within Chiru. Salute to the makers nonetheless!!
Unfaithful (2002)
This is what we miss in 2020s, a quality drama!
An excellent example of one bad decision ruining your peace and harmony in the entire family. I guess that's what makes human beings complicated. The lead pair's act is top notch. Simple and yet complex. Richard Gene is phenomenal and full of class. To behave like he did throughout the movie requires some nerve and even he did succumb to negative outburst. Diane is outstanding. Being a smartphone addict, I didn't not touch my phone while watching this well made piece of art. The background score and music needs a special applause.
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
Light hearted, funny chic flick for older couples!!
Jack cant go wrong even in chick flick movies. Breezy pop corn drama for any festive season. Except for overdose of heart attacks scenes meant for comedy, a very watchable movie.
Dushmani: A Violent Love Story (1995)
Sunny Deol wasted by terrible direction!
So many scenes without logic. Sunny Deol chooses to fight with the goons instead of taking his friend to hospital. The make up and hair do of Sunny and Jackie changes every other scene which means the movie was completed in later after major chunk was shot first. Sunny Deol who's is terrific in his dialogue delivery in movies like Ghatak, Damini and Ghayal is not given any meaningful dialogues. The movie could have be decent with some slick editing and proper reason between two enemies. It's very difficult to understand the reason for hate - there's no strong point anywhere in the plot. 1995 marked the end of action movies. The romantic era began with Shah Rukh from 1996 onwards. Nevertheless, we missed Sunny's powerful performances until Gadar happened.
Damini (1993)
Story is always superior! Fabulous movie!
This is one example where plot takes precedence over a star's screen time. Firstly, hats off to the Director Rajkumar Santhoshi - phenomenal movie in the 90s. Meenakshi is fantastic as Damini. Great spirit shown my Sunny Deol and Rishi Kapoor for taking up character roles. You get Goosebumps hearing Sunny Deol voice in the courtroom scenes. Last but not the least the great Amrish Puri - another evil character.
Eeb Allay Ooo! (2019)
90s Art movies kind! Shows how convoluted our society is!!
Gives a tour of a lower income people's journey to make ends meet. The funny parts are the ones trying to chase the monkeys. Overall very slow for modern day OTT audience. Moral of the story is - survival of the fittest!
Pushpa: The Rise - Part 1 (2021)
Stellar Performance by Allu Arjun!
With this movie and Sukumar's exceptional direction, Allu Arjun proved that he can not only do method acting by getting into the skin of the character but also add SWAG and ATTITUDE which makes the audience stay glued to the screen. His body language changes depending on the person he interacts with - as a friend, as a accomplice, as a fiancée, as an enemy, as a son etc. The supporting cast is also fab. We can watch this movie three hours straight in a theater without a break and you will not turn your head for a single second.
