Marcello Marcello (2008)
a heartwarming and very entertaining film
Marcello is a young man who lives in a sunny village by the sea with a strange tradition: When a girl turns 18, the boys of the village each make a present to the father of the girl. The father then decides with which of the boys his daughter can go out on a date. Marcello doesn't think much of this tradition until he falls for the daughter of the mayor... The following pursuit for the perfect present is fast paced and very entertaining to watch. Nice acting, camera-work and music and the funny story make this a winner. I really hope that this film gets picked up by a big distributor, because it deserves a bigger audience. If you liked pictures like "Il postino", this one is recommended to you.
Robert Zimmermann wundert sich über die Liebe (2008)
A very entertaining and intelligent comedy
Leander Haussmann brings us his best movie since "Herr Lehmann" with this fast and funny new comedy. He captures Hamburg with his beautiful camera-work, brings us a great performance from an old acquaintance (Maruschka Detmers) and sets the stage for the wonderful Tom Schilling, who looks much younger than his age - which is great, because you keep wondering how old this guy actually is. The references to Bob Dylan and The Graduate are fun to find and the inspired music by Element of Crime fits perfectly. I was particularly fond of the cameo by Detlev Buck. If you have enjoyed "Sonnenallee" and "Herr Lehmann" you can look forward to this one.
Vitus (2006)
Swiss feel good movie
Vitus is the story of the "wunderkind" Vitus, a very talented boy who defends himself against the pressure of his parents to become a famous piano player. The movie is very moving and highly entertaining. Bruno Ganz finally manages to let you forget his turn as Hitler in his role here as the understanding grandfather of Vitus. The weakness of the movie are some of the child actors, who can not convince all the time. Theo Gheorghiu is excellent, though, and it is fun to support his character Vitus, once you have found out that he is fooling everyone. You will see things in this movie that you might have dreamed about as a child - such as showing the grown ups that you are smarter than they are and flying an airplane.
