Netrikann (2021)
I would like to donate my eyes asap - A RANT
For a movie that spends way too much time on the villain, we hardly see any character development or even character at all. We get that the bad guy is an evil ra*ist, but should that require over 50% of the runtime focussing on torture p**n?
Story wise, this is nothing new. Why does every Indian thriller movie make it a point to portray the Doctor as a bad guy lmfao!?
Honestly, the movie could have lost an hour of run-time without changing the overall impact of the final product.
The only scene i preferred in the entire movie is when Nayanthara gets chased around the first time from the metro station to the mall - it was actually well shot and i was waiting in anticipation over what was going to happen next. Possibly the only way this movie felt like an actual thriller.
On the other end of the spectrum, the police interrogation scene is a joke and I don't understand what they were even trying to acheive with that.
The discount Brother (Gautham) was actually an interesting character and I'm glad they gave him something to do the whole time.
I gave it 5/10 stars and I'm not sure whether it deserves more or less. I guess I'm mad at the lack of originality and the obvious lack of passion in the movie. It feels like the creators think the audience is dumb.
Somebody with the right drive and screenplay could turn the same plot + characters into something actually meaningful.
Love, Victor (2020)
Watched both seasons. Here are my thoughts.
Season 1
I thought the show was very overrated because of the clichés and the fact that it had a boring storyline as a whole. I couldn't find any of the characters interesting. I'm a 19 year old gay closeted teen who didn't enjoy the show as much as i should have. So my original imdb score was actually a 5.
Mia was terrible, Lake was insufferable. At one point, Victor and his entire family were annoying as hell. It was just chaos all over.
There were good moments - the New York episode, The tension between Victor and Benji, and the conversations between Simon and Victor.
Season 2
They clearly made good changes to the show. We saw different sides of Victor, Lake, Pilar, and Armando. The characters felt real this time around and not like stereotypes.
Rahim was a beautiful addition to the cast, I loved every minute of his screentime.
The show stressed on how the grown ups cope up with the LGBTQ+ culture and it was portrayed as realistically as possible.
There were a lot of good points throughout the show.
There were a couple of downsides obviously. Clichés (but lesser than the previous season), and questionable character choices. But overall, this was a huge improvement. So I think I'm going to UP the score to a 7.
Let's see how season 3 does!
Sweet Tooth (2021)
LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!
Honestly, I think this belongs in the list of top 10 netflix originals.
I watched all 8 episodes in two sittings - It was that good. I haven't read the graphic novel before so I didn't know what I was getting myself into.
Positives:
The Soundtrack was Brilliant. Watch this with the best earphones you have. I'M NOT KIDDING.
They spared no expense with the visuals and it shows. EVERY shot was beautiful (reminded me a lot about Farcry 5).
The actors were pretty solid, especially the main character himself!
Negatives:
The plot as a whole is very slow, the show takes its time developing the various characters. We don't know anything about the bad guy (yet). The entire season feels like a pilot episode.
But every episode was interesting to watch with our main characters interacting with other people in different circumstances.
Overall:
This is one show i will never forget! For a second, it looks like it's made for kids and at the next second, it has gritty scenes.
It has beautiful visuals and soundtrack. If you're missing the outside because of the pandemic, this IS the perfect show to watch!
I swear, if netflix cancels this for some reason, I'm rioting.
The Sleepover (2020)
Watch it if you have absolutely nothing to do on the Quarantine.
It's dumb, funny and hardly makes sense. The jokes are okay. Looks like it is aimed at a younger and older demographic. This is definitely in the "watch it with your family on a lazy night" category.
Penguin (2020)
High expectations, less delivery!
When I watched the first 20 minutes, the movie was perfect - it had the perfect tone, i could see the beautiful camera work. The colours were vivid and amazing to watch. That was it .
Everything went downhill after that. The plot hardly made any sense, the writing was so dumbed down and the secondary characters were all wooden. The movie felt really fake and disjointed.
The biggest problem was not the absurd storyline. For me, it was the unrealistic interaction between the characters - laughable at times.
Credit where it's due, the camera work and the location is literally the only good thing about this movie.
Ponmagal Vandhal (2020)
Raw take on today's scenario.
I'll keep this review short as possible.
1. If you're a Jyothika fan, this movie shows her best performance in tamil cinema.
As for the plot, it's intriguing enough with a couple of twists.
2. This is a courtroom drama which runs high on emotions more than logic and evidence, but not necessarily in a bad way (which is my reason for giving 9 stars instead of 10).
3. The storytelling is pretty different and the camera work looked excellent.
It's not a perfect movie, despite its minor flaws, it was still a great watch.
Since it deals with the issue of child molestation, this movie may be a lot to digest for sensitive viewers. However, this is the harsh reality in today's world. So this movie was always meant to be tragic and bittersweet.
Calibre (2018)
More or less a Character study.
Well acted, but predictable and very slow paced. I should however appreciate the realism portrayed by the characters.
The location looked gorgeous as well.
The Half of It (2020)
Special and wholesome
As countless of reviews have mentioned, it is not a love story. The direction and acting is top notch, lighting and soundtracks are beautiful.
A nice touch to the netflix teen romance genre.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)
Beautiful experience
I don't normally do video game reviews AND I know nothing about Star Wars so i was naturally skeptical about the game, but I played it and damn, it was amazing.
The graphics are gorgeous and well detailed, the levels on various planets were interesting and the boss fights were all fun. 100 marks for the combat system.
The best part of the game is the characters and the voice acting. These characters deserve a live action movie with the same actors.
Ps : Cameron Monaghan is fine as hell.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Something just doesn't click right.
The movie was surely beautiful, had great acting, costumes, humour and that was all.
So where exactly did it go wrong?
The script was an entire mess ,I don't even know where to start.
CHARACTERS :
Harley was just being Harley, props to Margot Robbie.
Surprisingly, the rest of the birds of prey were interesting characters as well, but they hardly got enough screen time.
Roman Sionis was... I have no idea what he was supposed to do. A women hating sadist, that's all his character is. Nothing more.
Victor Zsasz even more useless than Sionis. All he did was laugh in a creepy weird way, nothing else on the table. The guy probably had like 5 lines of dialogue.
My main problem with this movie is that it says all men are bad, i mean there isn't a single male character that is just normal.
The plot was really simple, and the movie took a lazy style of narration, which is my next problem.
NARRATION :
3/4th of the plot was explained by Harley to the audience, she apparently knows what's happening in the scenes that don't even involve her. DC audience aren't dumb enough to have the plot spoon fed. And the worst part is, it was force fed.
This begs the question of why the movie was ever made in the first place. DC took their sweet time to come up with this? The Joker and Harley Quinn breaking up, taking place offscreen.
Personally it felt like reading a fan fiction in an alternate timeline where Gotham is all glitter , sprinkles, Night clubs and horrible horrible men.
I gotta admit though, the fight scenes and the humour were great!
V1 Murder Case (2019)
Hard skip on this one
What in the world did I watch? Horrible acting, screenplay, and worst of all story. It didn't make any sense. The plot jumped to different subjects like nyctophobia, forensics, trauma, and then jumped to honour killings, like this doesn't make any sense at all. Wasted 2 hrs of my life over this movie.
Kaappaan (2019)
Suriya was the only good thing about the film.
Honestly disappointed in the film. Weak screenplay as evident by flashing of various scenes without much continuity. The plot was fairly decent , but as i mentioned, let down by weak screenplay. Personally felt like it lacked the magical touch of KV Anand.
The best part of the movie were the actors themselves : Suriya was a delight to watch, Mohan Lal is amazing as well (though restricted by weak plotline) ,Arya and Sayesha did their job well. The BGM was not upto the mark (only one song was very good, and that itself sounded similar to a recently released Spanish song) .
Overall I feel mad that a wonderfully talented actor like Suriya has been restricted by the film standard.
5 stars for Suriya + 1 star for the other actors.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Hauntingly Beautiful
A 10 hour long perfect series that has more elements than horror in it. The acting is top notch, special highlights to Carla Guigno. The transitions between timelines (which also means different actors) are really smooth and very natural.
The sets looks beautiful and dialogue is nail bitingly scary. Jumpscares are well placed and doesn't cheapen the horror in any way.
Kudos to Mike and team for this well crafted show. Hope to watch more of this from Hollywood!
Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019)
DOES THE JOB
What are people expecting?
It's a solid Nancy Drew adaptation which is faithful to the books and is a great popcorn flick. The actresses have done a great job, especially Nancy herself .
A family movie with a good message, I wouldn't mind watching a sequel.
Riverdale (2017)
Honest review of Riverdale
This review is based on the first 3 seasons of 'Riverdale'. Basically, A short, crisp and honest review of the show.
Also, there's a TLDR at the bottom :)
Season 1 :
It took me a while to get adjusted to the mood and weirdness of the show. Yes, there was cringe here and there, but I was interested and this kept me hooked up at the show. The characters were fresh and interesting.
Season 2 :
Bad. That's the only way to describe it. Too much non-existent subplots and continuity errors. It's a living meme now. Nothing much to say about this season.
Season 3:
What in the actual world were the writers thinking? It's not the plot that's the problem. The dialogue is a HUGE problem. In fact, The worst dialogue I have ever seen in a TV show. I'm actually mad at the wasted potential.
TLDR :
Show started off good but went downhill faster than Cheryl speaking. The actors are not into it anymore. And it's oversaturated with clichés, representation, sex and repetitive plots. So y'all are better off without watching it.
But it's so damn addictive and I'm too into it to stop watching!! HELP
Pitch Meetings (2017)
Pitch meetings are TIGHT!
Ryan George talks to the other Ryan George about how many scripts are made super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Yeah yeah yeah! That's exactly what this show is about! Reviews are TIGHT!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
*More Harry Potter, less fantastic beasts*
HP films are very good. But you know it is in great trouble when it's just average. While it may not be fair to compare both the series, the second installment of Fantastic Beasts crammed too much of Harry Potter in it, that it forgot about its own characters and story.
Pros
The score was fantastic, the casting was perfect and it bought back a lot of memories. The action was amazing (opening sequence was one of the best I have ever seen). The visuals were gorgeous and mesmerising. The characters are lovely and honestly, the characters are the reason I watched this film.
Cons :
The entirety of the movie was sloppy and many scenes were badly executed. Some of the best characters in the first movie are not the centre of attention and are barely there in the movie. Sometimes, it felt like watching a play where there were more plots and more reveals and the movie wanted to run badly on the 'shock factor'. The chemistry between the characters was off , unlike the first film.
Final review : A wonderful movie which may have taken itself too far. Worth a watch , but watch it on 2020 along with the third film as the ending may not be satisfactory.
Aquaman (2018)
Amazing watch!
This movie is one of the rare gems out in the sea. Every scene looks gorgeous and breathtaking. The cast couldn't be more perfect, Jason, Amber and Nicole were so fun to watch.
Everything is different. This isn't your regular Marvel formulaic film (*cough* JL *cough*). The tone itself was quite different and fun to watch.
*The only reason I gave it a nine out of ten is that the dialogue is fairly predictable and sometimes, it sounds like they are reciting a play*
There are so many characters and the movie worked. It had so many subplots and a lot were happening, but it never failed to entertain the viewers.
Also, I would say it's the most comic accurate movie out there!
Finally, the soundtrack. It was magical.
Also, mid credit scene ;)
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013)
Wonderful sequel !
This is a spoiler-free review, so don't worry xD.
This movie depends on how much you enjoyed the FIRST part. Let's see, while many of us found it amazing with very good fight sequences , some viewers were left disappointed ..
Well, this movie covers it all - good story line (10/10), action- packed (Boy, the action sequences are THE best.. 10/10) and EPIC fight scenes - I had to watch batman vs joker and batman vs superman because it was AWESOME, it took animation to another level.
Below, are few answered questions.
Violence? YUP!! lots of blood during fight scenes, might be disturbing and scary for young viewers and throwing batarangs in the eyeball kinda stuff.... (8.5/10, they can reduce the violence because there will mostly be only young viewers)
Good sequel? Absolutely ! Animation was Perfect, and if you are a DC or a bat fan, you will love it!! (10/10)
So guys, This movie is epic! You'll love it !!
Note - Batman vs Superman:Dawn of justice is slightly based on this movie. You'll find out why when you have finished watching the movie.
Hope my review helped :)
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012)
awesome movie.... CUS IT'S BATMAN!!!!!!!
This is a spoiler free review, so you don't have to worry xD.
Batman is like one of the best superheroes in the DC universe, and this movie just proves the point!. This movie is very interesting without any unnecessary scenes/plot. Story is superb and well- written. The action scenes doesn't fail the expectations of Batman fans and the casual viewers themselves.
Is it boring? NO! Violence and stuffs like that? YES! A lot of violence actually, and gore and stuff..
I still haven't watched the second part yet, but I will write a review once I have seen the movie.
Overall - It is a good movie, You can gladly spend 1 hour and 15 minutes of your life to watch this.
Again, the only thing bugging me is the violence and It's PG-13.. So I'd give a solid 9.5 on 10...
Hope this review helped, please check out my other reviews !!!! :)
Arrow (2012)
Best superhero series to change from best to the worst.
I'm writing a 'spoiler free' review, so don't worry guys!!!
Season 1 :
Rating - 10/10
S1 was full of action-packed stuff and was fun. It has lots of plot twists and the actors have done a good job in depicting their respective characters with a convincing plot. In short , Season 1 of Arrow is worth watching.
Season 2 :
Rating - 10/10
S2 carries the same action packed sequences with a more interesting plot and it thrills the viewers. Again, the ending was convincing and I personally feel season 2 had the best villain. Again, its worth a watch.
Season 3 :
Rating - 8.5/10
After expecting a lot from the hit series, I was disappointed after watching the 3rd season. The fight sequences became sloppy and boring. Even though, the main plot is as thrilling as ever, You can basically feel they are dragging it to finish it in the end. Last 3 episodes were fun so I have nothing to say about that. But in some episodes, I felt that the action packed series changed into a soap opera, considering the lot of crying, a character blaming him/herself for many things and some other character convincing him/her that its not their fault. It gets sloppy .... I was so disappointed after watching this season. But I couldn't stop it because I always believed that the 4th season could be better like the other seasons.
Season 4
Rating - 7.5/10
After the disappointment from the 3rd season, I expected some new action from the fourth season. BUT, The plot is boring as hell, I wonder whether they follow the actual comic story. Every episode is boring, with too many fillers. Fight sequences - rubbish. OK , not totally rubbish, but it's bad ... I think 19 episodes released till now... There was hardly any plot in this season.
Heard they are making a Season 5 for this show... Again, I hope they make it better this time... I don't believe in third chances.
I recommend DC fans to watch this show. For casual viewers who want some entertaining plot, you'll do fine with the first two seasons.
and for people who watch 'the flash' or 'legends of tomorrow' or both, it'll be a good watch because those three are inter-connected with the characters and the plot.
Tantei gakuen Q (2003)
Most underrated anime
This anime is one of the best anime I ever saw. The plot is fun, and the filler episodes are the best. Revolving around 5 characters - Kyu with his deducting skills, Megumi with her photographic memory, Kinta with his knowledge in martial arts, Kazuma with his knowledge in computers, and at last the mysterious Ryu. This anime is a must watch for those who are fans of Sherlock Holmes, and those who love the famous anime Detective Conan. I felt disappointed when they stopped this amazing show. It deserves better reputation..... and a second season.
The music score is good. Some emotional scenes with the soundtracks make you sad.. There are hardly any differences between this anime and Detective Conan when it comes to solving cases. Every episode is cool and it'll make you want more. My fellow anime viewers out there, I recommend this anime to you all.
