Dil Dosti Dilemma (2024)
Anushka's Summer
Adapted from the YA novel Asmara's Summer by Andaleeb Wajid, Dil Dosti Dilemma on Prime Video is a youthful and entertaining series that showcases Anushka Sen's talent in the lead role as Asmara, a privileged girl from Bengaluru whose planned summer trip to Canada gets unexpectedly rerouted to her grandparents' middle-class neighbourhood. This sets up a coming of age narrative filled with humour, life lessons, and emotional moments.
The supporting cast, featuring talented actors like Tanvi Azmi and Shishir Sharma as Asmara's grandparents add significant warmth to the storyline. Their interactions with Asmara are the best parts of the show. Unfortunately the subplots involving Asmara's best friends tend to derail the flow of the story. These story tracks are woefully underdeveloped and lack the same depth and charm as the core narrative that they constantly keep interrupting - not to mention the majority of the cringe humour is to be found with Asmara's interaction with her BFFs.
Ultimately, this is a cute series that strikes a balance between humour and drama while exploring themes of family, tradition, and self-discovery. Anushka Sen has a successful career ahead of her!
Honey Trap Squad (2023)
An insult to the audience!
This is less of a TV series and more of an advertisement for the streaming service's primary sponsor-a betting company. This pathetic excuse for entertainment should be ashamed of attempting to pass itself off as a legitimate show. There is no cohesive story, the acting is atrocious, and everything seems to revolve around the sponsor. There is even dialogue that mentions that company by name, and one character is even seen wearing a t-shirt with their logo in a particular scene!
This show is the perfect example of streaming "content" because that's all it is-something slapped together with no thought or respect for the audience. It exists solely to beef up the provider's streaming catalog and simultaneously appease the corporate sponsor, all while lining the provider's pockets with sponsorship money, money that they certainly didn't spend on the budget for this disaster that's for sure!
Bhoot Bakra (2022)
More Comedy Than Horror In ARY Digital's Eid Telefilm
Bhoot Bakra is a horror comedy TV movie that aired on ARY Digital on Eid. It's a lighthearted story of a ghost who is locked away in his mansion until his son (Syed Jibran) moves back in with his wife (Neelam Muneer) and the rest of his family. Given the opportunity to possess the first person he encounters, the ghost jumps into the body of a goat that was bought for the purpose of sacrificing for Eid!
At times the movie does feel rushed as it tries to pack in as many jokes and comedic situations within its breezy 76 minute running time - with that being said, the movie still manages to find time for every character to at least have a funny encounter with the possessed goat as one by one each of them eventually find some characteristics in the goat that reminds them of their family patriarch. Overall this is a decent family entertainer albeit not a very memorable one.
Platonic (2023)
Rogen and Byrne chemistry makes the show!
Two estranged former best friends meet up again and rekindle their friendship. The plot is simple but what makes it work is the chemistry between Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne - basically if you enjoyed their work in the Neighbor's movies then you will have a pleasant time here. Sure the humor is crude, but that's what makes it stand out from the countless bland sitcoms that currently populate the TV landscape. The first three episodes that launched today are super relaxing and a perfect way to kick your feet up after a long day at work! The only complaint would be that the supporting characters don't really have much of a voice at the moment and I suppose that's perfectly fine as the main focus is on the dynamic between the two leads. It would be super cool if the characters do live up to the title of the show and remain strictly platonic because to be honest there are hardly any shows, comedy or otherwise that feature strong male/female friendships. So yeah, if the humor of the Neighbor's movies are your bag (bonus being this is by the same director of those movies), then stream with confidence.
