The Watcher Self (2016)
Caution: Your breaking point may come before the end of the movie
There is always a breaking point for everything. In The Watcher Self, we the viewers watch as the lead gradually works her way (no pun intended) to her breaking point. Simultaneously however, we too may experience a breaking point of our own. Is it the excessively applied and ultimately anti-climatic sound effects and themes for you? Maybe it's the fact that other than the lead, no other character shares more than 10 full sentences for you? Perhaps it's the painful and frustratingly open-ended conclusion of the movie for you? It doesn't matter. Chances are this movie will find (or create) a breaking point for you and in so doing, it will have proven to be a true psychologically tumultuous journey. Some may be looking for this in a movie, but I personally did not enjoy multiple aspects of this movie as it was too open-ended for me. This is not to say the lead lacks talent as an actress or that she is not an image to behold, but that (...seemingly empty) script simply did not do her any favors. Direction with the lead was okay, but every other individual is either written to be facile and uninteresting or is terribly directed.
Sex Weather (2018)
Not everyone's cup of tea
There is something special here that never quite gets realized. Aspirational film-making is not something to be ashamed of nor is being able to eek out a quality product from sparsely more than a shoe-string budget: this movie reeks of both. The actors seem to be working at the extremes of their skill and each almost(!) deliver. The nudity (particularly male, but also in general) is surprisingly explicit, but is also comical and casual enough that it never feels gratuitous. This, combined with the plot's focus on the fleeting nature of 'falling in love' juxtaposed against the tasks of commitment and struggle inherent to serious long-term relationships make Sex Weather feel relevant in some way. The decision to cast an interracial couple is bound to be an attention-getter...and I wish the movie would just delve into this factor of the character's differing identities instead of making them seem mostly culturally identical. Ultimately, the almost bipolar shifts in emotion displayed by the characters in the course of a 24 hour period really highlights the state of many relationships in 2017 (when the movie was made) till today. All in all, the director, writers and actors have definitely showed they have something to offer and perhaps will deliver more of it in their next respective projects.
Glass (2015)
Wasted time, wasted effort.
While you get the sense watching this movie that these actors could do better with a stronger script, you'd be too bored by the looped scenes, frustratingly noisy sound effects and weak attempts at art house giallo to notice. Even the beautiful array of full-frontal nudity cannot earn this movie any extra points as it annoys it's way to the bottom of your soul. Seemingly senseless by it's end, the plot makes no attempts to clue in the viewer on what exactly is going on and then suddenly (and I suppose intended to be artfully), it ends. Why put so much effort into creating a story that shares its core with no one, when a step or two, or ninety further would have garnered so much more meaning to it? I cannot say. I would recommend however, that you only watch this if you possess infinite amounts of patience and a distinct enjoyment for aimlessly wasted time.
Headspace (2003)
an engaging and sometimes disturbing realistic look into the world of S&M
As a viewer with an extremely limited insight into the world of Sadomasochistic relationships, I began viewing this documentary with an open mind. We see Justin and Batman, two self-confessed lifelong practitioners of pain giving and receiving, talk about how important their sexual habits are to their lives. Other characters also share their similar passions, and then the documentary cuts to a scene that brings up any inexperienced viewers' concerns regarding how viewing such graphic acts may affect and influence said viewers' behaviors/thoughts etc. By the end of the documentary, I came off feeling like I had a better understanding of this world. The S&M acts, while causing intense squirming and cringing on my part, also conveyed a deep commitment to a means of gratification that left me bewildered and quite intrigued. With unique yet casual characters that somehow have an unintentional attractiveness about them, this documentary definitely earns any attention that is paid to it!
