Shûmatsu no Valkyrie (2021)
It could be better, but just dumb fun.
Every one thousand years, the Gods' Council assembles to decide the fate of humanity. After many years of human history, the gods come to the decision that humans are irredeemable and must go extinct. However, during the council the valkyrie Brunhilde, a demigod, intercedes in the name of humanity and proposes to give humanity one last chance to prove their worth. The gods agree to hold the battle of Ragnarok, a tournament with 13 notable humans from across history against 13 of the most powerful gods engaging in duels to the death. Humanity will be spared if they achieve 7 victories against the gods.
First after that brief introduction, I have to say that I don't have any previous experience with the material, don't reading the manga, so I am not comparing and judging the anime by itself.
The animation is bad, lacking fluidity and composed mainly of static scenes; and the story isn't told in a very good way, lacking depth and drama.
Despite the many flaws, it is still very watchable and a very fun anime in a trashy way. Really dumb fun with over the top action.
Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (2020)
A good futuristic sci-fi anime
In the year 2045, after an economic world disaster, which destroyed the value of all forms of paper and electronic currency, the "Big 4" nations of the world are engaged in a state of never-ending war, called Sustainable War, to keep the economy from collapse. In this world, Motoko, Batou, and other members of the extinct Public Security Section 9 are contracted as mercenaries under the group "GHOST," using their cybernetic enhancements and battle experience to earn a living while defusing hot-spots across the globe. However, the emergence of a new menace and a conspiracy uncovered by former Chief Aramaki force Section 9 to reunite.
The anime is very similar to other ghost in Shell stories and it is comparable to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It is an action anime with more content than you would normally expect from an anime of that kind, although this one does not try to raise existencial questions, focusing more on the mystery. I actually liked it more than Stand Alone Complex (SAC), because the episodes are better connected and the series as a whole feel more cohesive, instead of using the episodic approach of SAC.
Also it actually dresses the Major the way it should, one point that really broke the plausibility in SAC.
Beastars (2019)
Weird, but in a very good way.
"Legoshi, a large gray wolf, is a timid and quiet student of Cherryton Academy where he lives in a dorm with several other carnivorous students including his outgoing Labrador friend, Jack. As a member of the school's drama club, Legoshi works as a stagehand and supports the actors of the club headed by the star pupil Louis, a red deer."
"Out of nowhere, Tem, the alpaca, is brutally murdered and devoured in the night, setting off a wave of unease and distrust between the herbivore and carnivore students. At the same time, Legoshi has a fateful encounter with Haru, a small dwarf rabbit who has been in love with the red deer Louis, and begins developing complex feelings for her." (Wikipedia)
Based on that, leaving out the animal part, the anime seems like a slice of life drama based on a love triangle. But fortunately is a lot more than that.
Beastars is a strange anime. It uses a lot of classic tropes, but in a way that they appear to be fresh and new. And that is definitively a sign of a good storytelling when you pick something old, give it a new cloth and it appears to be completely new.
Beastars does that flawlessly and in a very interesting way. Recommended.
ID-0 (2017)
It could be a lot better.
This anime could be a lot better if it steered away of some annoying anime tropes. The premise is really great. A distant future where the discovery of the new mineral Orichalt has allowed humanity to expand beyond the solar system. To mine Orichalt, humanity developed I-machines, robots that can operate by transferring the human pilot's consciousness into the robot's operating system. A good theme to explore the bounds of humanity. Unfortunately they used it in the wrong way and let the awesome premise go to waste in just a moderately fun anime, with some plot twists. The characters are nice, but not really very deep, and they could given their background. The animation on the other hand is really great.
Devilman: Crybaby (2018)
Expecting a lot more
I really like dark stories, but I never connected with Devilman Crybaby. The story is very dark to the very end, but it feels less than satisfying if you want something more than violence and gore. Characters feel flat; the sense of justice of Devilman is very warped (a human killing others is a murderer and it is not spared because he has emotions); the points raised by the anime are not fully explored, and easily discarded; story seems rushed and superficial, specially the end. And the animation, although a lot of people will disagree with me, bad.
I didn't expect the end, but I will not comment to avoid spoilers. It was a surprising end.
Kangoku gakuen (2015)
An Ecchi Anime, and a Good One.
This show got me by surprise. First of all I try to watch mainly seinen anime, and mixed with those are some ecchi anime. Most of them are just trash and I quit after just a few episodes. Rarely I watch one until the very end and very few rise from the bottom to get a score from 5 to 7. But this show did more than that, it got an 8.
It is an ecchi anime (there is no denying that fact), but the first one of the genre that I truly liked, because of the story. It is very funny and characters are more close to have real personalities than most animes. And certainly much more than ecchi animes.
The story meshes really well with the ecchi parts, making them really fluid, after all this an anime about a group of horny guys locked in prison. There is the mandatory bath scene, but gladly the anime stays for the most part away from baths and ripped clothes. Relying more on camera angles and strange situations.
Samurai Flamenco (2013)
Crazy and unexpected anime!
It is really difficult to categorize Samurai Flamenco. It is a parody, but it is a very subtle one. Despite being a hero show, it is not an action anime.
The anime starts slow, but the craziness soon fall into the show. It has so many plot twists that is really difficult to figure it out what will happen at the next episode. Despite the craziness of the story, it is a very focused anime in the underlying message: what happens behind the scenes at hero stories and the deconstruction of anime clichés. In that point this anime is one of the best.
If you like plot twists and crazy stories, do not care for action, and like a really subtle and intelligent comedy; you are in for a treat!
