Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein (2023)
Don't look at the ratings
Had to put a small review after two episodes as I can't understand the low rating. If you like true crime then this is a good watch. They're not telling you anything we don't already know as such, it's just much more detailed and a 'deep dive into Geins crimes, mindset and family history. Also the impact on this quiet backwater town in Wisconsin which is forever known as 'Geinsville'. You also get to hear Geins voice for first time which is interesting. Anyway so far so good for me.
*edit* now watched all 4 episodes and it did dip slightly. The first episode remains the best one by far. That been said its still worth your time and a broad take on both him, his crimes and the impact the crimes made on cinema.
Stranger Things: Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (2022)
My fellow Stranger thing Dudes
OK, let's get it straight this show is amazing ! Season 4 has shown that this whole production has become so vast and us the viewers so invested. The music is, ah, oh my lord, off the charts ! Journey??! I mean come on!! Just inject that into my veins. The set design is also incredible. If this season doesn't win some sort of accolade then I'm rioting. I also love how they integrate new characters and they fit in so seamlessly. I agree with what other reviewers have said though, we do need to feel real menace when it comes to our beloved main progonists. ST just loves to expend 'Fringe'or new characters but if in season 5 they don't kill off major characters then I feel they have let us down, just a bit. Max will recover, we know that and did anyone really think she would die even as Lucas is holding her ? My guess is she will now become trapped in the upside down thus beginning the cycle again. Eddie was incredible and who knows, he could be alive or at least feature in season 5 in some capacity? I still believe the show is at its best when the characters are together, not off fighting separate battles but maybe that's just me. I don't get the whole will thing ? So he's gay and in love with Mike ? I mean where's that going to go? Bit deep for me and I don't mean Wills voice break :) Argyle also great character, funny at least. Nancy becoming a major player was OK but not at expense of Jonathan who was sidelined to make room for the Nancy, Steve romance no matter what anyone thinks.
This Is Us: Miguel (2022)
It's a good question, ask me later.
Sometimes you just have to say that entertainment in all its forms can blow you away, to have the ability to both write and act so another person watching is moved is no easy feat. I have loved this show, I couldn't care less if others find it saccharin and overly melancholy. It is the best written and acted network show I have ever seen. I tip my hat to all involved, I wrote a review back in season 5 where I thought Miguel would not make the final curtain call, sadly it has come true but his contribution as a character will now never be understated due to a beautifully written and masterly acted episode from Jon Fuertas.
Killing Eve: Hello, Losers (2022)
Oh dear
This isnt just the worst ending of Killing Eve its possibly the worst ending of any show. Ever. The actors deserved so much better, the series in its entirety has been average at beast but this was just a damp squib of a finale. Unanswered questions a plenty and just plain wrong. I'm not concerned about the ending been anywhere near the book but I think we deserved more of, well, something ? Carolyn's line 'the four head honchos of the 12?' What did that mean ? They were all in on it ?why did Vilanelle have to die ? Is Carolyn the head of then 12then and eve knew or didn't? Why didn't Pam want the job of I assume killing vilanelle and eve ? You cant leave us to imagine ALL the answers !!btbh the whole thing felt like a pre cursor to what will probably become a spin off with Carolyn's characters story been told but frankly who cares ? Terrible way to finish this was a brilliant show what seems now a long long time.ago.
Killing Eve (2018)
2018-2020
The difference between reviews from 2018 to now tell a story all of it's own. This was a great show that has sadly become a ok show. The performances are still good but the show and its name has become a distant memory. It was at it's best when Eve was chasing Vilanelle and there was this odd sexual chemistry between them. And the funny one liners were ingrained in the show! Now we have this infinite search for 'the 12' which has just detracted from the central point. I think they ran out of ideas around Series 3 and now we are seeing it peter out sadly. I shall still remember it fondly but instead of going out with a bang it's more of a gong!
This Is Us: Saturday in the Park (2022)
Little Jack
Wow, isnt little jack a terrific little actor? I hope he goes on to big things after the show ends.
I have to say as this show draws to an end my sympathy for characters is at an all time low. I've nothing left for Kate and Kevin, they are both so self involved it makes me wonder why they didn't ask the question of the writers. 'People arent going to like us' In fact in terms of the present day characters I find myself drawn more to the non members of the Pearson clan. Miguel, Maddy and Toby and Beth is by far my fave character! It's still a great show and I shall miss it but all good things come to an end.
This Is Us: Don't Let Me Keep You (2022)
I don't have a mom anymore
Brilliant acting from Milo. One of the best written network shows of all time in my opinion. I shall be very sad to see it end although I'm not sure I can withstand the emotional turmoil it puts me through an weekly basis. The standard of the episodes has never dopped at all for me, one or two right in the middle of the pandemic where I imagine it was borderline impossible to film but other than that the consistency is great. Let's hope we all get an ending befitting this brilliant show.
Attached: Paranormal (2021)
Pixie
Why didn't he ever check his own recorded footage? Unlike Paranormal Activity there is no menace here, no building of tension and unlike the characters in PA I found myself having zero empathy for this guy. I know the movie was probs done for a about $50 but the lack of reality can't be overlooked. The cat was there then it wasn't, his girlfriend never called or checked in, the cleanser was there about 5 minutes and purified the whole house? And as stated why oh why did he not check back the footage? If he had we might have then seen some emotional reaction and felt we were part of this thing. And the reason for his spook? Oh he went on a ghost walk to some old prison and got a funny feeling when he walked past one of the cells. Deary me. Sorry it's a big swing and a miss from me I still like the found footage genre but this is one that could have done with staying lost. When he finds the words 'death' written in the living room i assumed he was reviewing his own movie.
Devil Djinn (2021)
Poundland Genie
This film is fantastic.....ly awful I mean seriously it's brilliant......ly terrible. It's beautifully disastrous etc ok enough.
The acting is my favourite part, staggered dialogue, more wood than a timber yard etc. It's my first outing with this director (and probably my last) but having done some digging looks like he's done a bit of copying and pasting from a film he made called 'The Cupid?'
I watched it because I liked the look of the demon but boy oh boy was it bad. I'm sure Poundland has a similar range of masks if you fancy making part two of this movie.
What I can say is that it did make me laugh, genuinely. Granted I was laughing at how bad it was but still a laughs a laugh. If you've had a drink, got some mates round or you and your partner fancy something to laugh at stick it on! I watched it on YouTube so at least I didn't pay to view.
P. S. If you do plan on watching it I advise a few 'Djinn and Tonics' before, during and after! See what I did there? I'm here all week. Thank you and good night .
This Is Us: The Adirondacks (2021)
Season 6!!!
Ok, go with me here but could it be that Nicky ends up with Rebecca?? I know everyone will be thinking about the ending of this episode but Nicky mentions 'the missus' right at the end and flashback to the future scene where Nicky is at Rebecca's bedside in the big house? God I love this show 😂
New Amsterdam: Things Fall Apart (2021)
This is what New Amsterdam was about !!
This is what the show used to be, drama, tension, good acting, human relationships! Recent episodes have slipped no doubt but this was the show I fell in love with. Keep em coming, please !!
New Amsterdam: Why Not Yesterday (2021)
Emma Hong
Emma Hong is going to be a phenomenal actress, her performance twice now as a child psychopath is genuinely terrifying. Anyone who understands psychopathy will recognise how well constructed her performance is. Remember her name she will be a big star.
The Father (2020)
The final scene
The final scene is utterly heartbreaking and incredibly played by both actors. This felt like a stage play on screen to me and there isn't a step out of place from a single character or performance. That final scene will stay with me for some time.
2012 (2009)
Easy review
There is only one good thing about this film. The dog survives and the fat Russian perishes. 🙃
It's a Sin (2021)
The British 'Glow'
Only a quick review to say that Episode 3 is one of the most outstanding episodes of a TV show I've seen in some years. Callum Howells (a new actor to me) is brilliant and it is heartbreaking.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Powerhouse performance from Carey Mulligan
Ok, the ending slightly disappointed me but overall what a film! Such a strong performance from Mulligan. Beautifully shot movie also and there are no weak points of this as it moves along at such a good pace. Yes there probably is a bit of an agenda but these horrendous situations do continue to happen and hell someone has got to shine a light on these things! Margot Robbie is very talented.
The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)
Contort your reviews
Had to add a review to say that although it is far from a classic, for those who are not aware the actress playing Hannah Grace is actually a contortionist, amongst other things in real life so the majority if not all physical shots are untouched. That for me is worthy of a watch ! Passed 90 minutes and I've seen a lot worse. Not quite as good as Autopsy of Jane Doe but not far away.'
Roadkill (2020)
Second series ?
Must be another season at some point. I like short and snappy series but this is one episode short I think. A lot to cram into episode 4 and a lot unexplored I think. Excellent acting as you would expect, particularly Hugh Laurie and I liked Helen Mcrory (although she was let down badly in episode 4).
Antebellum (2020)
Forgettable
I waited a long time for this to be released as I love horror. This wasn't horror. I understand the point the movie is making and credit to them for trying to tell it in a different way but there is no twist here. Fifteen minutes in I guessed the scenario she was in and at the end of the film you're just left thinking 'that's ridiculous it could never happen' which then downplays the whole narrative a bit. 'The Village' by Shyamalan is way better and more believable in actual fact. I think once more people have seen this film I can see it landing a rating of 3.5 and an entrant onto the worst movies of 2020 list, which is a shame because there are some ok performances but the plot is dissatisfying and ludicrous really. Such a shame.
The Rental (2020)
Indulgent
Just a quick review to balance some of the unfair reviews. As a debut from Junior Franco it's passable and perhaps an indicator of better things to come. I don't like unclear endings so that disappointed me but you can see where he was going with this.
There She Goes (2018)
7.9?? Really??
I've only written a review because I saw the overall rating, but reading the reviews has restored my faith in people. This show is magnificent, say what you like about us British but our ability to turn pain into humour is unrivalled! Based on Shaun Pye (the writers) own experience with his disabled daughter it is beautifully acted, written and produced. By the way the girl playing Rosie who isn't actually disabled, I mean just wow !!! I spoke to someone who has an autistic son and she said that although this show was so close to home for her the humour made her appreciate it all the more.
You Should Have Left (2020)
Why so negative ?
Thought I would add a quick review as there is a lot of negativity around this film. I'm suggesting it's a classic but it's fine as it is. Kevin Bacon is good as ever and it's a well put together story I'd probably a bit obvious. It's plenty creepy enough and at 90 minutes worth a watch in my opinion.
Blacked (2014)
A revelation in cinematography
Where to begin !! This is a truly beautifully shot masterpiece. It's ability to handle interracial relationships through story telling is exquisite. The characters are brilliant, great dialog throughout and lots of house porn (so to speak). My only grumble is all the episodes end the same ?
The Graham Norton Show (2007)
Biggest guests !!
Graham is the only chat show host who asks a question and allows the guest to answer without interrupting. It's a simple as that! Gets the biggest stars because in my opinion they know there going to have a good time and be asked proper questions. Always a nice vibe to the show and as previously mentioned Graham is the best by a country mile.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Don't read the reviews watch the film
I've read way too many negative reviews on here of this film so one must restore some balance. Firstly the issues. It's too long and it does not have the pace of infinity so the first hour is a struggle. I didn't agree with what they did with Thor and inevitably one or two characters are under used, Thanos, Thor, spider man. Yes, it is over sentimental but it is the finale sooo... Romanoff's death was not mourned as iron mans was which is a shame. Right, now the good bits. The fight scenes are epic particularly the last battle. Iron Man is outstanding and the star of the show in my opinion. I loved the hulk/banner cross over character and as usual the humor is solid. As finales go what more could you ask? It has an 'end'. A perfect finish to this phase. And the time machine plot is very good and they arc the previous films in beautifully. All in all this is a great ending to what has been an extraordinary anthology. Shout out to Scott Lang btw who is brilliant! Watch don't read. I AM IRON MAN 😓
