Debigarh e Garbar (2020)
Koushik Roy is Always a Pleasure to Watch
The movie is okay-ish. Story is predictable but still entertaining to watch because of the riddles. I found it somewhat slow-paced like they're assuming that the audience is overly dumb. Some of the dialogues reiterated the plain obvious.
The star of the show is Koushik Roy (as he always is). He's a natural and pulls most of the weight of the movie quite effortlessly. No one else stands out much; some of the scenes involving the girls seemed really forced and fake.
Overall, a decent one-time watch.
Wedding Season (2022)
Pleasantly Surprised by How Much I Ended Up Loving It
Every romcom/chick flick is predictable, so let's not hold that against them. I actually loved how it wasn't just that, and proceeded to touch on important issues. Very relatable, and entertaining.
I did feel that they could have gone for a better lead actress; her acting/expressions/body language seemed pretentious.
Overall, it was a decent, fun watch & I could rewatch when I'm in need of a chick flick and a tub of ice cream or a bottle of wine.
Badhaai ho (2018)
Simple Yet Magnificent. It will make you laugh, and manage to tug at you heartstrings at times, while instilling a social message in your mind.
The entire cast and crew did a fantastic job! Each and every actor gave a splendid performance, and you can't help but appreciate the work of the director, writer, editor, and every other member of the crew who helped create this masterpiece. I cannot emphasize enough on how well thought-out and well executed this movie is. Ideas are very important, but implementation is equally important, if not more. Every emotion, every thought, every idea has been depicted so beautifully in this movie, it is commendable. With simplicity and humor, they showed how the society can control your life as much as you let it. I feel like Ayushmann is slowly repositioning the image of a common man in our minds. This guy is something else! Kudos to the whole team, and especially to Ayushmann for always compelling us to believe how exceptional an ordinary man can be.
Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi (2018)
Jassi Gill makes a phenomenal entry into Bollywood with this laugh riot
Okay, I have to admit, the cute Sardar in the promos caught my eyes, but he surely doesn't disappoint with his performance either. Apart from being extremely easy on the eyes, he is a good actor and singer. Jimmy Sheirgill was fantastic, Sonakshi was barely adequate, Diana Penty and Ali Fazal are a delight to watch for the little while they are on screen, and I wish Aparshakti Khurrana had a meatier role because he is super talented. All the other actors were good in their parts. Kudos to Mudassar Aziz for doing an excellent job, and putting together all the perfect ingredients to make a good comedy. Nowadays, I just get super excited when I see a Bollywood movie which is clean and genuinely funny (not just trying to be). All in all, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is a well thought-out movie with great performances, sure to give you plenty of laughs.
S/O Satyamurthy (2015)
Loved Loved LOVED it!
This movie is one of those feel-good family movies, where you'll be smiling throughout most of it, and even after the climax. Allu Arjun is flawless! He single-handedly carries the weight of the film on his strong shoulders. Upendra is great too. Sneha is adorable in a small role, and Samantha is good except for the fact that her lip job disturbs. Everyone is perfect in their roles, and did their jobs well.
One or two things are a little (unbelievably)exaggerated, but I still give it a 10/10 because everything else is perfect. The message they want to convey has strong moral characteristics, and there is emphasis on family values. There's really good comedy and also action (if you like it, I personally don't). Tired of Bollywood, tired of either too much violence and action or mushy love stories that make me wanna puke, this was my perfect refuge. Loved how the movie is about a son's love for his father. Can't praise this movie enough. Will be watching again and again.
I hope Bollywood doesn't ruin it by trying to remake it with mediocre actors.
Masters (2012)
Watchable only for the visual delight called Prithviraj
This was the first Malayalam movie I watched, and I don't know if it was a wrong pick or this is the norm. But that couldn't be as there are so many good Bollywood movies which are remakes of Malayalam movies. Almost everything in this movie revolved around one specific sort of a crime, and no, that crime wasn't the theme of the movie. They could easily bring a variety (as if there is a shortage of the types of crimes in this world). There are one or two minor variations but almost negligible. That was pretty disturbing. Anyway, for the first half of the movie I was under the impression that it is gonna be great, but the movie started going down a steep hill interval onward. The last hour barely had material worth half an hour.
*Spoiler Alert*
Why would they swap targets when they were gonna kill themselves anyway? The reason why they decided to kill themselves with the victims was also stupid. Why the last person chose to kill his own target was not explained. Why he chose to spare the real culprits was also not told. Basically, nothing made sense when it came to the real explanations. They built the anticipation quite well but couldn't live up to it.
The movie was a disappointment but Prithviraj is pretty soothing to the eyes. He looks so good all throughout the movie that I was literally gawking at him. Good that looks can't really kill.
Housefull 3 (2016)
You could die from the forced humor
What crap! I had some expectations, esp because all three of the actors are so good at comedy. A waste of talent, really. For Housefull 2, I was laughing out loud every 5 minutes, and for this one I barely did it 3-4 times. Major disappointment. And the "actresses" (RIP acting). Jacqueline was the best actress among them (imagine how bad the others are). Nargis Fakri is a nightmare of an actress. Housefull 1 had two good actresses: 2 out of 2. Housefull 2 had one (Asin), which was 1 out of 4, but she still pulled all the weight gracefully. This one had none. Bad direction, bad script, forced humor (esp the girls' tendency of literal translation - which is also incorrectly literally translated). I honestly feel bad for the awesome actors. The only funny part was Akhri Pasta as he seemed consistent, and yes Jackie was great in his role - probably the only saving graces. The movie didn't even pick up till the interval. And why does a B grade actor like Samir Kochhar (I'm not kidding, look it up by all means) get to stand with the rest of the cast? I hated it when he was dancing with the heroines.
Anyway, 1 of the 3 I gave is for Akhri Pasta, 1 for Jackie, and 1 for the 3 guys who really tried, esp Akshay.
Jolly LLB 2 (2017)
Arshad Warsi will always be Jolly LLB for me
First of all, sorry to say but Akshay Kumar+Anu Kapoor+Kumud Mishra are no match for the Arshad-Boman duo. While they are good, all through the movie I kept on recalling how smashing Arshad and Boman were. Boman was this classy and sophisticated bad guy you'll love to hate, while Arshad was brilliant and effortlessly convincing as Jolly. Even sitting in the past, they were overshadowing the performances of the new cast. Saurab Shukla was great, and so was Akshay Kumar(if I don't compare him to Arshad), but Anu Kapoor annoyingly overacted all through.
About the movie, I just want to say that, to me, it seemed a lot more "politically correct" and commercialized than the first one. Huma's character was disappointing compared to Amrita's character. Overall, it was an okay movie, entertaining. It had bigger names and did well at the box office, good for them. But for me, it failed to recreate the charm created by the first one.
Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002)
"Crap by any Other Name Would Smell as Shitty" - whether you call him Manish or Armaan made no difference to his lack of talent
I was a kid when this came out, but old enough to let this scar my memory forever. Anyway, I made the terrible mistake of watching it again to judge with an adult mind, and I currently hate myself (although I gave up halfway). I mean, where do I start and when do I stop?
Manisha spent her whole career sneakily trying to make a Guinness World Record of the highest number of films where she played a rape victim. Its just pathetic because she seems to try to capitalize on something so sensitive. But hey, that's not even a part of the list of things wrong with this movie.
First of all, how do you expect me to take Mr.Kohli seriously if he randomly shows up at someone's windowsill with his bobbing head attached to a graphic snake's body? Anyway, I know I shouldn't have expectations from this movie but I have two major questions: "What?" and "How?".
What as in what exactly was what I watched? I mean, how is it even possible to think of the things they actually showed in this movie. I am on the verge of calling them genius because this is beyond the capability of an ordinary mind.
How as in how on earth did they convince the actors to be so criminally insanely stupid? The dialogues and irrational actions and reactions of actors like Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty (who were pretty accomplished by then), are literally traumatizing, like another review mentioned, the iconic scene where they convince Manisha to forgive the villains is not only stupid but wrong at so many levels.
I know Arshad was struggling badly when this movie was made, but his character was excruciatingly pathetic and meaningless. I am particularly affected by that because I love that guy. His death scene was so badly executed that I felt like crying. He was apologizing for making the others cry although no one was crying. His painful jokes could surely make a sensible person shed tears of pain.
All in all, this movie is the perfect example of collective stupidity. I still wonder how they got such top-level actors to do this movie.
