Naisu no mori: The First Contact (2005)
More fun that Nacho Libre...and Nacho was much better then i expected
Funky Forest
I have waited 1 night to let this all sink in.
First of all a little back story. One year ago, I went to the New York Asian Film Festival and saw the film, Taste of Tea. This was a delightful family story which I surprising loved, even though I am the kind of guy that will never turn down the cheesy Hollywood summer block buster.
One year latter I have returned to the Film Festival. Although in New York this festival is packed with violent Korean films, Funky Forest remains the festival's logo for its T-Shirts. So the question you should be asking is, what is all the hype about? Strange foreign film at an underground festival that sells out every show it plays. The hype of course revolves around 1 man, Katsuhito Ishii, or perhaps that's one mans unique brain.
Funky Forest as mentioned by the commenter before me is like watching a Cronenberg comedy. Nevertheless it goes farther then that, it is like if Cronenberg, Lynch, and M. Barney, all had their head infused with each other and then Adam Sandler hit them with a silly stick in till the being could not breath.
If anyone is supposed to summarize what the film is about, then all commenter on this site will fail
miserably. One of my friends described it as watching youtube.com shorts for 3 hours. I would agree it's a whole bunch of shorts, like a pulp film in a way. The stories are kind of connected but you are enjoying the show more then trying to figure out where it all hangs in the balance of the film.
I am giving this film a 9/10 because it did get a little long and tedious, but nevertheless the film had so many memorable moments that it is well worth anybodies time.
All that I am left to say is that as I left the theater I had an urge to buy the DVD, or a soundtrack, but instead all that was on the counter for me was a T-Shirt, and so of course, I bought it.
SEE THE FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Enjoy guitar brothers, mole brothers, little Asian girls, planet pico, dreamscapes, 3 babbling girls, and of course Homeroom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keeping Up with the Steins (2006)
Its a JEW thing
Look, I am 18 and Jewish. I saw this with 2 of my closest also Jewish friends. Of the three only one of us had a barmitzva. But none the less I am convinced that you will find this movie funny if you are Jewish. This was the conclusion my friends and I came up with. This movie has a target audience, and that is the audience that to any extent of the way can relate to it. Its a little slow and at some times feels as if you are missing a scene. Nevertheless the jokes are there, and I did laugh. As a coming of age story I would give it a 5 but as a Jewish comedy I would give it a 9, so that brings us to a seven. Jermey is funny as always and a couple camio roles that I don't wish to reveal really brings the whole movie together and at the same time has you brawling in your seats.
Cha no aji (2004)
A must see movie!
Note: I am your classic American teenager, I love violent movies. So naturally I was one to show reluctance when a friend suggested that we go see this movie at the NYC underground Asian film festival. Needless to say from my summary I was not disappointed.
The first thing to say is I can not think of any other movie that is anything like this movie and although I did insult myself before I have quite good taste in movie and by violence I was more or less leaning towards Pulp Fiction and Clockwork Orange. A taste of tea is simply about a family. Each character in the family has a little conflict, and as any movie the conflict attempts to be resolved as the movie goes on. They aren't eccentric conflicts at first glance, but as the movie continues the complexity grows. Their stories are not very intertwined except for the fact that it is all the same family. Nevertheless there are moments that want to bring you to tears.
Despite all this I would not call the movie sappy to the least bit. The movie is full of crazy imagery and at the same time is quite comical. To say the least its light hearted. But during countless scenes the audience would burst out in laughter.
To finish up, this movie is an absolute must see. Find it, buy it, rent it, watch it. In an age where it is almost impossible to find a good movie I am surprised that this movie did not surface long ago.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
discussion
So although i was talking with a friend about this i thought i would bring it to IMDb. One flew over the cuckoo's nest, is supposed to have many religious metaphors. Do you guys agree? i thought this was a little weird but I'm not sure anymore. My friend said that his teacher told him facts like 12 people on the bus is like the 12 apostles and that McMurphy pretending to have a lobotomy but snapping out of it is like Jesus coming being resurrected.
My thoughts on the movie: It is a great movie, let me restate as in top 25 movies ever made material, nevertheless my only problem was the choice to focus the screenplay about McMurphy instead of chief, the main character of the book.
Suggestion Read the Book and See the movie then decide which you like better for yourself.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Film Class-The political issue
Well I am a high school student and I take a film class and being a huge movie buff i was shocked that Taxi Driver was not in our curriculum.
Anyway one of the main reasons I love this movie is due to its keen insight into the political mind. Travis's view on the corruption in the world boils over and he clearly goes insane. The movie digs deep into the soul of a political mind which makes the movie just that much more enjoyable to watch. Travis trains for his war, yet while training has not decided who he will attack the Senator who he does not believe will do an adequate job solving the removal of the scum which lurks in New York, My hometown :). Or should Travis attack the drug dealers dealing with the problem directly. Killing the Senator is a very democratic thing to do, instead of dealing with the problem directly he attacks the person who Travis could trace the source of scum too. The republican way would be to jump in and try to solve the problem directly. Travis chooses to not kill the senator knowing that he would be caught for sure. Of course the irony of the movie lies within him killing "innocent" drug dealers so he can take out his aggression on the world. This makes him an radical republican, he kills drug dealers and pimps, who technically are wrong doers but if you really think about it they are not farther out of like then any other pimps and although they deserve to be in prison they don't deserve to die. Travis choice to be a republican over a democrat frees Jodie foster which killing the senator wouldn't of solved. The further irony lies within the world praising him for killing 4 pimps even though they did not directly do anything to hurt him. Of course the people who praise him are unaware that if possible he would of killed the senator. Travis is insane, but re stabilizes through killing. Which hits upon man's primal instinct to kill. It is hard for me to define what the movie truly says about the political parties but nevertheless it is an epic film that can create tons of thoughtful conversations and sleepless nights.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
Its OK, but yet just doesn't cut it
I have loved the books, I have read the books, well at least the first four, and this movie came out making me feel so-so, and yet still disappointed. It was fun watching old jokes come to life, and some things were done very well. The director was quite creative and the actors more or less accomplished their job. But sad to say i the movie cut things i loved and changed things i love which makes me overly critical. It had its moments and if your bored on night and want to rent something be my guest. The saddest part of the movie is tied with a witty comment left by Marvin at the end of the film, (if i were to quote i would be breaking spoiler rules), nevertheless it gives an ominous feeling that sequels are not in our future. The sequels that would be guaranteed to take my $10 even though i did not like this film.
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)
Metallica: the band discusses it's hardships in creating it's album Saint Anger
Although I am not a big Metallica fan or a big documentary fan i found this film very interesting. Anyone who ever thought they had any comprehension on how an album is made think again. I was quite surprised to discover the long and tedious process which goes into creating an album. Whats even more interesting is that my friends tell me Saint Anger is their worse album, and that makes me feel sad because i actually saw all the work that went into making it. This documentary goes into the linguistics in how a song is put together and let me be the last to inform you that it is not the simple Beatles method write the lyrics and then write the song. In fact it is much different. Nevertheless i cranked out Battery on my itunes and listened to 16 times straight after watching this movie.
The Interpreter (2005)
Political Turmoil in the UN and in the plot
Note: I have put the spoiler check to be careful about what i say.
I saw this movie at the opening of the Tribecca film festival, hearing Sydney Pollack speak about it you would think that i was about to witness a epic film, unfortunately this was not true. Interestingly enough Sean Pean looked drunk and Nicole Kidman's smile way a bit to wide perhaps this was the dead give away but by the time i thought about that the film had already started.
First off the good: this movie is not Pollack, Kidman, or Pean's fault. It had supreme directing and acting. The Movies camera angles were also top notch. Unfortunately the plot was not only bad and did not hang together but on a last note a bit egotistical. Will this movie be remembered cause they shot in the UN, quite possibly, because once it flops the UN will never let them film there again.
The main problems lie within Nicole Kidmans character as a whole. Who has a tremendous past to hide, although you would think the UN would look into these things before hiring an interpreter. In fact this movie shows a lot of corrupt employees within the UN all of who you would believe would get a simple background check.
Anyway Nicole Kidman lies the entire movie every step of the way to duck Sean Peans character unfortunately you would think if they really considered her a threat which she most obviously was they would put her under custody and she would not be going to work if her life was in danger but there things as well are not taken care of.
The plot is also one of those stories where the political turmoil gets so complicated that they hope the audience will go with the plot, (i did not). i followed it and ultimately came to the conclusion it makes no sense.
the reason why i have listed this as a spoiler is because Nicole Kidman doesn't get arrested in the end of the movie. She does numerous things illegal witnessed by many cops. The truth is if i could get close to Bush and tried to shoot him but instead let him get tried in international court because of "the innocent people" dying in Iraq I would not get off free, i would probably going to jail for the rest of my life. But i am not Blond... SIGH
