The Penguin: Homecoming (2024)
(Sorry) Worse one
Love the series so far, but this one was a bit slow from the get-go, after Sofia kills off her family.
Plus, Plot twists are highlighted by lazy writing.
1) how can anyone believe she lets Johnny go??? Just because he whispered sweet nothings about her mother decades ago? After all the disrespect and the letter he wrote supporting her mental disability?
2) killing Johnny. I could see this a mile away as he interrupts her a couple of times. I knew she would off him!
Sal escaping is also extremely weird and doesn't go into detail his harrowing escape from a maximum security prison! The Sal(shank) Redemption part 2 anyone?!
The Tyrant (2024)
EXCELLENT-but turned into Marvel's Venom last episode
Wow, what can you say about Park's new show! The pacing, acting, script and plot were all TOP NOTCH in the first 3 episodes.
The main heroine plays it cool: fits the role well. The govt baddies all seem 3 dimensional, and also including the Black ops team. The only criticism is Paul, whose English is kinda bad and unbelievable. His Korean acting is a lot better. All other supporting characters have a great script to work with!
Usually for many K dramas, lines are repeated, actors OVER act, and the action is slower paced. Not with Tyrant... layers & layers of tough-as-nail characters that play their roles superbly. Nothing is predictable until we hit the last episode. Some lazy script writing complemented by a vial/virus as black as... Venom from Spiderman comics/movies! A bit disappointed but still a thumbs up.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
My Stomach Couldn't Take It!
Lol, been a horror fan all my life but I watched this on a sad trip to the Orient + jet lag at 1am in the morning!
ENVIRONMENT: The theater screen's color was vivid + sound was 20% too loud! Am I getting too old? Maybe
Boy, was this gory!
Plot was good/Ok, acting was the standard fare-not too crazy nor too shabby. Characters' stupidity probably a 7/10: why just sit there when watching a demon hop onto a countertop chewing a wine glass? Finally after 3/4 of the film, starting turning formulaic. I felt I had enough and could escape this techno blast
Lots and lots of blood complete with an elevator tidal wave rip-off of the Shining. Riveting soundtrack!
6/10. I warned you.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
MISSED opportunity: Where's the other stars??
I was really looking forward to this! Movie ran the gamut of emotions, and was great, but why not bring back some old faces like Cobrai Kai did?
Maybe I'm just old, but the original was insanely cool with a top notch supporting cast
They did bring back Iceman and some middling support cast, but imagine if Meg Ryan came back, Kelly Mcgillis, Viper, Tim Robbins, Michael Ironside, etc.
Does feel lonely at the end, with only Tom defying the wrath of old age & time.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: Memento Mori (2022)
Too Cute! Did they stop Thompson?!?
Jeesh, is this a basketball show or what? It's not Dynasty folks or Dances with Wolves. Have a basic amount of bball action please!!!
Did Westhead stop Thompson with Cooper? Is Richard Pryor a coke head?
Moon Knight (2022)
Was expecting a LOT but...
Pretty standard fare here. Isaac's performance is mediocre, Swan's is in the bland side, and supporting cast's grades are nothing to write home about.
The plot is meh, and unoriginal. MK wakes up outside of his bed and can't count for the missed days. Hmmmm... that's it?
Maybe expectations too high.
Pachinko: Chapter One (2022)
Boring & Disappointed immensely
Was really looking towards this best-selling novel being adapted for the "middle" screen, but Apple fails again in the Korean department
Pace is slow, acting is meh. Lines are generic. Finished 1.5 episodes and won't watch any further
Gorgeous cinematography though.
Gone Girl (2014)
Plot Holes Too Large to bear
Downright silly, which throws the entire film out the window. Wasted performances and of course the wonderful camera work.
Still in awe why this is considered a classic when it contains such lazy script writing!
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
90s Called & wants their show back
Sure the first 3 episodes of Star Wars were good back in the 80s, but the entire franchise just hasn't evolved much from a cinematographers' viewpoint.
- corny music
- methodical & slow fight scenes
- cardboard acting
Big *yawn*
Jiok: Episode #1.3 (2021)
Just need to watch the first 5 mins...
Do you take the audience for a joke? You have the SWAT team and police there sitting on their asses doing nothing as the hairy beasts murder a key witness on live nationwide TV?
Ridiculous.
Hawkeye (2021)
Fight Scenes made Hailee look incredibly non-athletic!
Hawkeye has always been at a disadvantage when he's just an average human being albeit Very talented versus the likes of Incredible Hulk and the God of Thunder
So his special must be really good with awesome fight scenes?? NO
Fight scenes were dreadful while Hailee looked really, really slow.
Episode one moved at a snail's pace. Script writing was very unambitious.
Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2019)
Slow Burn, but is 🔥
Wasn't even a fan of the group, but watched it out of curiousty.
Acting is very good-you get a feel for all the characters and care about them. No over-the-top performances here
Plot is a bit slow, but the cast pulls it through. A very good, slow burn.
Swagger (2021)
Over the Top, Lacklustre Performances
Shot really well like many Apple TV shows, but the script writing is really bad and pretentious.
The performances are really bad too with a disappointing Jackson as the lead
At least the bball sequences are shot pretty well, but other than that wait for the DVD release (j/k)
Dune: Part One (2021)
Brisk Action: MOVIE Duration CAN BE LONGER!
One of the movies that I wished could be longer. So beautifully shot, you care about the characters.
I understand they didn't have enough time to delve in all the characters and new planet, but if they did, movie could have been perfect.
And did I mention the all-star cast?
Can't wait for sequel.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Everything as predictable as the back of my hand
Entire movie looks like one big music video or Vogue cover... predictable plot, nothing charismatic from the heroes, and shots are all glossy and pretentious. No substance
Don't understand why Marvel is so much head & shoulders above DC, but it is what it is
