The Queenstown Kings (2023)
Not a sporty film!
Again Netflix delivers an under par film. If you are going to cast for actors make sure the very actors you do choose can at least play football. The story is also a cliche, more or less a cultural clash. Jahmil is becoming comfortable with his own success. Hailing from the eastern cape he should have made this a rugby film because the three major sports in that province are boxing, rugby and cricket. Football is not that celebrated than those three. He's already made a boxing film and we know he's not South Africa's Ron Shelton because for a slick sporty film this lands on the side if flimsical. A terrible film.
Justice Served (2022)
Stop undermining your audience!
The courthouse is actually the South African parliament. What hell? Netflix should have called this crap show Money Heist: Mzansi Edition.
From the onset the story unravels itself without any effort to pace it convincingly. The filmmakers lack omniscience in tackling their own story which could be an erred misconception of black lives matter given the subject matter. Yes justice in South Africa has failed the downtrodden the manner in which this series started was shambolic to say the least. Sloppy writing, shirt sighted directing and really poor acting. I had to switch off 15mins in.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
There's no Stopping Cruise!!!
Better than the original Tony Scott film (MHSRIP). Love Tony and what he's done for cinema. This film has all the right ingredients as we all rated it highly. It is a blockbuster with enough panache for an art film just wonder if it will get nominated for golden globes and even the academy awards. Miles Teller has not been exciting to watch since Whiplash. But here he brought the hig guns with his reputation. However Tom Cruise Mapother carries the whole thing on screen. He is magnanimous, debonair and with him at 59 at the time this was filmed takes the lead and the story to another level. This project was a worthwhile wait. I loved the action sequences, the acting, the music, cameo roles by Ed Harris and Val Kilmer made contributions to the overall character arcs for MAVERICK to get back into Top Gun as an instructor, rekindle his love for Penny, remedy the past and again lead the charge into a heroic display with an aerial dogfight that outdoes the first Top Gun film. The 5th Generation fighter jets swung the advantage towards the mysterious terror state developing a nuclear program. Our heroes lucky escape again just goes to show that the USN is very resilient. I thought Glen Powell brought about a resurgent arrogance of ICEMAN as HANGMAN.
This is a must watch!
Kedibone (2020)
What is the theme here?
First of all casting age appropriate actors. Secondly the lead was in her first trimester of pregnancy yet she didn't care if it was visible or not. The director and producer were lazy. The writing was not production ready but they chanced they'd wing the narrative and it fell so flat it just said South Africans cannot tell their own stories! However Msithi played by Thabo Gabriel Malema played second fiddle with panache, the best friend who kept a secret to not hurt his boy. His scenes had emotion though the flair of the all round characters was unexciting nor compelling. Even veteran actors like Kenneth Nkosi and Matli Mahopela were stiff and lacked charisma. Nkosi did his best to be the lightweight of heavy issues by using his comical nature to bring comedy into it but it didn't hold. The inciting incident was weak and throughout the 135mins one could feel the pace dragged out to an anticlimax and a very soapy resolution. The acting again was not up to standards. I should have rated this 0.2/10. I kept getting the feeling Thomas Gumede was talking about himself through this film. The subject matter had more to do with his own issues that telling a story with range, raw emotion and bring us to the moral of it. No essence at all to this picture.
Again The sound of the film was not not mastered. Over some conversations between characters the music deadened their dialouges and it was amateurish.
La casa de papel (2017)
Believe the hype!
My original metacritic score is 8 but I want this to be an 8.5/10. The plots are tremendous, the breakdown of storylines come together beautifully especially the story B. The back stories. The characters Particularly Berlin, lots of charm, charisma, psychotic and erratic with enough humanity. Professor part was also excellent but the girls were spectacular. Nairobi and Tokyo were perfect Femme Fatales. This show lived up to its hype and became a cult show. Classical series. Well done Netflix at least here you displayed commitment to entertaining households. Your latter shows are far more disappointing.
Narcos: México (2018)
Excellent follow up to the original Narcos.
In my view Narcos has six seasons. I loved the crossover stories interlinking Pablo and the Thin Man, Pancho was a refreshing feature as well. The research team and the writers penned down exhilarating plots telling how the Mexican Cartels got to be bigger and more troublesome than those of Colombia. The original Narcos had character depth, especially Wagner Moura's Pablo Escobar. That was the story engine for days and everything gravitated around Escobar so much I couldn't help but root for the guy. This was also top notch and just like the original Narcos the first two seasons focused on the pioneers and the third on secondary characters. Netflix here did not drop the ball and set a standard they can no longer best.
Resident Evil (2022)
Zombie boring as opposed to dead boring.
Only thing is appealing, the main actress is hot. Other than that the show is nothing but form and style with zero substance. A low budget straight to video shop garbage. I cannot believe Lance Reddick stars in this after being involved with Class A categoric TV shows in The Wire and Bosch. Even as a supporting actor in those shows he has abundance of talent to rather starve than be associated with a mediocre show. I guess when the well is dry drinking crude oil quenches the thirst. Really disappointing attempt. Rather watch the Korean Period Piece with man eating Zombies at least the story is better than this CGI science fiction crap.
Gangcheolbi (2017)
Top class action suspense
A surprise action thriller. Entertaining from the word go, South Koreans make great films. Hollywood style action films like this cannot be remade for the mass market as it will water down the raw and captivating storyline. The North and South of Korea conflict comes to play but the human element brings about two ideological stances of mismatched and unlikely alliances. Making this film the turnkey blockbuster to be enjoyed by any film loving audiences all over the world.
Korean filmmakers are going to be hard to ignore in the nearby future.
Hard to Get (2014)
Glimpses of Friday, Natural born killers and true romance.
A highly entertaining film for South african audiences, sadly not prestigious enough for accolades. It was made to compete in the silver screen box office. A very nice attempt.
Dollar$ + White Pipes (2005)
Decent biopic!
This was Donovan Marsh at his Supreme best. Undertaking a story of an underdog real life character. It is not a masterpiece per se but one can indulge in their past time.
iNumber Number (2013)
They claim an American film company bought the rights for a remake!!!
Utter nonsense of a story. Tarantino should sue Marsh for plagiarism. He actually ripped off a classic in reservoir dogs of Michael Madsen's character kidnapping a cop??? Haaibo, what a let down. This film is by far the worst action thriller made. South Africa has lots of article stories that could have been read, researched and adapted into an okayish action-thriller piece. The villains are too clichéd and stereotype for the audiences to care or feel empathy for. Hogwash screenplay with disingenuous acting.
This is a waste of time for anyone used to watching good content.
Agent (2019)
Disengaged, Confusing and clumsy plot.
They tried to copy HBO's BALLERS and instead got it so bad. The story is superficial and the holes in the storylines severely compromised the intent of the filmmakers. Not enough research was done. Why didn't they ask Mike Makaab a true legend in sourcing Africa's football talent.or perhaps use CANAL+ RESOURCES to engage with talent agencies across North Africa and smaller leagues in Europe? The only good thing I take from this show is that I recognized two international actors. One from Viva Riva, Marnie Malone and the French actor playing the rival agent. They were wasted and even their participation in the series did nothing but dent the prospects of the show becoming an international headliner. South african stories need the magic of competent writers, screen method actors and directors who know how to conduct acting talent to making them compelling to watch. I give this show a lousy 2/10. An epic failure.
Kings of Jo'burg (2020)
A mediocre show!
The reason season 2 never happened is because this show is so subpar. The storylines are messed up, the acting is too pathetic, the production design is nonexistent. So much is wrong here.
There is no emotional hook. The characters are fuzzy and unrealistic, the witch craft subplot was an indication of poor creativity and lazy writing. This show should never have been made.
Bosch: Legacy (2022)
This has lived up to the original series.
I loved the LAPD Bosch but I like the legacy series even more. The story continues from where the original Bosch left off. As a fan I cannot wait for season 2.
About Time (2013)
More of a family movie but one for the incurable romantics!
A blissful story, well executed from acting, directing, score/music, so much more to it than just a romance drama. This is by far my favorite Tim Bevan production. It simply trumps all his earlier works in my opinion. It's a feel good experience but most of all the intricate lessons within the underlying messages of it are the most profound. The relationship between father and son, between the lovers and the beloved and the kindred friendships are the ups and downs of Thus hit British comedy. Nine years onwards it is one of those films I watch on some Sundays when viewing requires a feel-good watch.
The Old Man (2022)
My kind of slow burn!
Forget the Bourne stories by Ludlum. This is the high stakes series with archetype characters in the modern world of espionage. Jeff Bridges is fantastic as an aging former covert operative, his character with the two Rottweilers give me goosebumps. It is a very intelligent plot in a stylized setting. Love the back stories because they fuel the story engine by interlinking the past into the present. I only wish I could binge through it instead of waiting week after week for the next episode. I give this series an 8.7/10 so far. Very intriguing and exciting content.
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
The Guard of the Hawk! Rise-a-knight and Baron of Ibelin.
This is my favorite movie of all time. People must watch the Director's cut to truly appreciate it. To me this film speaks of a novelty the world has lacked up until today, where leaders part take in murder, deceit, greed, you name it. All of the ungodliness that is ironically committed in the name of God. This film is not just for the history buffs it is also a moral lesson. Although good triumphs over evil it is only because the good have better convictions. The love story significantly enough was my amongst my favorite plot point in this narrative. The virtue of a just man is in his courage to decide what is just according to God, not what he says about who told him thus. Everything about this film is priceless. I however love the benign nature of the protagonist, his benevolent soul and his evolution throughout the three act structure is simply superb.
I give this five thumbs up!!!
Poldark (2015)
A wonderful series!
This series is very much entertaining and I also loved the characters. It is well done from the 18th century settings, costumes, props and much of the story engines propell it to leave the audience wanting to see what happens to Ross after the season Finale! Talk about the open road? I think they should make a once off limited series as a sequel! It is a wonder to marvel why Brits are the dark masters of covert intelligence. I would love to see Ross infiltrate France and spy on the Napoleon troops. That would be fantastic.
Blood & Water (2020)
Did not live up to the hype!
This is a series with a lot of plots showing that South African actors are more suited for soap dramas. Take Zephany Nurse story and adapt it to a series then lose the plot by dragging the narrative through a messy high school drama. Story A, story B, story C and story D are so loosely tied and lack depth as much as credibility. I think the acting was also rubbish.
Collision (2022)
Crappy!!!
Short sighted Directing, novice storytelling and poor character acting. The residual of inconsistencies are splashed all over this film hoping it will resonate with great artistry. It's flawed from the start! A black gangster with a CELTIC CROSS? Really! Paul Haggis should sue because his masterpiece CRASH was plagiarized. When you typecast actors make sure they go the extra mile and bring more to the table during rehearsals. Might as well have a casting director asking vital questions like DO YOU HAVE BODY ART? This is a pertinent question because teenage high school students should not have tattoos! CRASH and COLISSION not only did they steal ploy but the title as well. This film is mediocre...
The Terminal List (2022)
Average to say the least.
I anticipated the release of this limited series thinking or hoping AMAZON would be dying to make up for the epic failure of WITHOUT REMORSE. Tom Clancy might be forgiving but I cannot speak for Jack Carr. Taylor Kitsch plays a Navy Seal for the third time, Chris Pratt for the second time.and Nick Chinlund also for the second time after TEARS OF THE SUN. I was not overly impressed with this series and I come to wonder if the competition with SVOD networks is compromising televised entertainment? That question needs no answer because lately disappointing projects have been sanctioned to the small screen without much thought from the executive branches of the studios. I wonder maybe could it be that American stories are becoming clichés? Or some executives inside the studio system interfere with the creative process? That unfortunately will remain a mystery! The major theme of this series is REPRISALS or REVENGE, I could see the plot unravel from episode one. It was predictable and I watched thinking maybe the twist will prove me wrong but eventually I breathed a sigh of "REALLY!" The action scenes were ordinary, the gore did not shock me like DENZEL's rampage in MAN ON FIRE. I expected to feel empathy for REECE and root for him to terminate those who were responsible with savagery. But like WITHOUT REMORSE this series was an anti-climax. I'm a fan of military novels and films now I'll have to wait and see if SAS will be a better series than this. I give this series a solid 6 because the narrative deserves that much.
City on a Hill (2019)
If one liked THE DEPARTED, THE TOWN and BLACK MASS this for you!
Boston in the early 90s is the world and it takes you to that very era in art direction, fashion, cars, politics, etc. They all lend character to this series. Kevin Bacon takes it all in his stride to add that final coup de grace with his portrayal of Jackie Rorh. Television entertainment has now surpassed stand alone films because every week we the audiences get a continuation dose of a weekly film. All threaded through episodes we watch a prolonged film. The plots are well structured and characters more relatable although very dark it hinges on themes of morality, good versus bad but REDEMPTION is the stand out theme. My verdict is THUMBS UP!
Queen Sono (2020)
Too many experts think this is great?????
If you've watched spy films or even read international spy novels then you will have an inclined outlook at how much of a mess this project was. It didn't live up to the hype! No SIGNIT (signal intelligence even though we are living in a hi-tech digital age) HUMINT (human intelligence), worst of all the spy agency is too fictional. If espionage is the theme know that majority of spy content deals a lot with geopolitics which was not emphasized in this show but with a flash of exotic locations. Pearl Thusi is an influencer not an actress. She can't act to save her life. If the filmmakers watched Zero Dark Thirty they would have learned not all spies have to fight bad guys with a display of martial skills. This was so bad I'm more amused with the obtuse reviews. C'mon who are we kidding?
Shadow (2019)
Mediocre detective story!!!
Trash television at best. Form and style done tastefully but the narrative is not so compelling. Those that had positive reviews about this show are either bias or are paid to juke the stats. If you have the worst taste televised content then your opinion of this show must not be literally taken for granted. South Africa is given the best platform on Netflix but I think the international film community is laughing at us. If this show was good and merited the reviews I saw on this platform then I ask this, why aren't these actors and filmmakers not in demand by the world's most profound film markets. The exodus made by British, Australian, Kiwi and Chinese actors into Hollywood. If this was a stellar project why are we not following up with season two? Answer is, the local industry is run by influences not real thespian...
Dead Places (2021)
Some reviewers are being bias
The first episode was clinical but the rest of the other episodes make this show nonsensical. If the author sold millions of copies where are the novel reviews? Rather watch Ghostbusters than this trash horror story with bad acting and loose plots.
