Yep, you will see a lot of reviews that say "oh, the theme of getting old" or "wanting attention from others" but really, they are completely irrelevant - they are the very shell that the character portrays in this film.
What you do get, is by far Demi Moore's best performance of her entire career without exception. And, a masterful combination of visuals and sound, incredible acting from everyone involved, superb direction, and an excellent story that does not rely on moralisms or "themes" to be effective.
However, it's .. not perfect.
The film is WAY too slow. And it makes it always obviosu what part is going to come next in the script, it telegraphs its moves like an incompetent boxer. And it also takes so. Much. Time. To move to the next point in the script, together with the film being so high-intesity, that it can be agonizing to wait for it to progress, but we're still watching because of how incredibly well made it is.
I would recommend this film to anyone who can stomach the fairly intense horror aspect, but i also imagine that some time in the future some shorter-runtime fanedit is going to come out that will make this film substantially better.
My vote, despite the problems: 8/10.

I was expecting a garbage straight-to-DVD film the likes of what Bruce Willis was doing these days, and, you know, the combination of Vince Vaughn and (literally any other actor) is a recipe for disaster.
Instead i found a fairly competent film, but one that has chosen a very unusual style.
The director of Bone Tomahawk goes for realism, with, i would say mixed results. As such any stakeout scene is very long and unventful, and every shootout lasts a fraction of a second.
The story is also realistic but like everything else in the film, it doesn't do "film fake".
Normally, in cinema - like in theatre - you exagerate things; you do things in a way that isn't "real", but looks more real than real would look. For example, there is a school of on-set sword fighting, that teaches you sword combat moves that look great on screen, but would be completely useless in any real-life sword combat. Because "real" and "good film" do not work well together.
So .. if you watch this film, be prepared for an unusual experience. I was constantly drifting between "oh this is really bad" and "oh this is really good", but by the end i had not wholly settled on either one.
My vote: 6.5/10 - an interesting experiment.
