A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Good, but could have been great
6.5/10 - A Discovery of Witches has the bones to be a great supernatural TV series, but is ultimately let down by poor dialogue and pacing issues. The storyline, especially the romantic elements, seems rushed/forced and the writing often cringeworthy and clichéd. It's hard to imagine the relationship between the main characters as something organic, especially set in a universe where inter-species relationships are taboo - you'd expect there to be more hesitation in starting the relationship initially, and instead have it something that could have been built up over the first season or so.
I'm focusing a lot of this review on the romantic elements because, yes, it is a dominant element of this storyline. So if you were expecting something other than a racy/romantic grown up version of Twilight you might want to skip this one.
What the show does well, however, is looking visually stunning and at least contributing something even somewhat different to a genre that has seen it's fair share of copy-paste narratives. Matthew Goode plays the role of an intense love-obsessed vampire with conviction, however, the jury is still out on Teresa Palmer's doe-eyed witch who seems to look perpetually startled (I must mentioned I've only seen up the the end of season 1).
Unbelievable (2019)
Unforgettable performances
The two lead detective roles played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever are performances I won't easily forget, and are the highlight of the show. Unbelievable has a realistic, real world kind of style to the script which can be dry at times but also adds an extra layer of realism to the show.
Carnival Row (2019)
I Was Expecting More
Currently two and a half episodes in and I have to keep rewinding it as I find myself looking at my phone and missing plot points. It's therefore fair to say that Carnival Row is not enough to keep me engaged, which is such a shame because it had loads of potential. The visuals and steampunk style are great, but it isn't enough to resurrect this show from death caused by storyline and acting cheesiness, and not to mention sometimes lazy dialogue. I'll give it a few more chances, but I won't hold my breath.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Simply MARVELlous
It's so hard to review something that I feel that every fan felt on such an emotion level - it's definitely something you just have to go and experience for yourself.it's very good - you'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Higher, Further, Faster
I absolutely loved Captain Marvel and Brie's portrayal of Carol Danvers. As far as origin stories go, I think it lived up to expectations, with some witty comedy (in traditional Marvel style) and badassery. My only criticism is that is seemed very rushed and empty at times (probably because it needed to come out before Endgame). I also wasn't the biggest fan of the directing style - I would have loved to see something a little bit more unique like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok's styles. Despite this, a very enjoyable film and I can't wait to see more of Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame!
Disenchantment (2018)
Disinterested
I really wanted to like this, after all, early Simpson's and Furturama were amazing and I felt there was a need for a great animated fantasy series. However, Disenchantment proved to be one disappointment after the next. The humour felt completely forced and often cringe-worthy. I found myself trying to look for redeeming attributes, which I only found in animation style itself and the similarities between Luci and my cat. Completely disinterested.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Infinity War is truly a masterpiece
10 years of Marvel cinematic universe coming together for an ambitious and exhilarating biopic - welcome to Avengers: Infinity War. In similarity with the brilliant storyline execution present in Game of Thrones, Avengers: Infinity War effortlessly ties in multiple character storylines to show the rush to save the universe from Thanos and his quest for 'balance'. A whole lot of laughter and tears later, I found myself on the edge of my seat, counting down the days until we see what happens next!
Overall, Avengers: Infinity War lived up to my high expectations on all accounts - all except one! In such a blockbuster masterpiece that has A-lister and A-lister and spared no expense in doing so, it seemed a little bittersweet to not have Hugo Weaving return as the voice of Red Skull. Just a minor detail in what is easily now my favourite Marvel film.
