Daddy's Little Girl (2014)
You better be a fan of gore if you watch this one
Came across this when it was listed as something similar to another film I watched, though I can't remember which film that was. Saw the rating was decent for a 'horror' film, so decided to give it a shot. As a fan of gore, this turned out to be a real winner, though it was quite difficult to watch compared to other gore films like the 'terrifier' series because it presented a situation that was far more realistic - no supernatural nonsense. Some reviews have complained that the film starts slow, but I didn't feel that way at all, as I thought it set up the eventual outcome quite well. If you aren't a fan of gore, and particularly don't like torture scenes, skip this one. But if you can stomach those, I think you'll find this one of the better revenge films around.
Terrifier 3 (2024)
Enjoyed the gore, disliked the story
First I'll start by saying that I don't remember much about the previous terrifies, so it's quite possible the storyline in part 3 makes sense, but I didn't enjoy the whole supernatural vibe and f elt it went way over the top like "It" did. Maybe that's a characteristic of killer-clown movies. I also found some of the storyline a bit confusing. For example, I have no idea how the opening scene fits into the film. Seems it's there to simply show some gore. That said, I did enjoy the gore throughout the film and thought there could be even more (perhaps much was cut out in editing).
Overall, I liked the film, but based on my previous ratings, it looks like part 2 was my favorite. I'm not particularly looking forward to part 4 given my dislike of the part 3 storyline, so I'll likely catch it on a streaming platform rather than the movie theatre.
Blue Jean (2022)
Boring
This film will get high ratings because of the subject matter, but I lasted about an hour then turned it off, as I found it quite boring. In addition, I can't imagine any teacher would have put up with the behavior exhibited by the girls in the gym class, so it wasn't particularly believable either. There's nothing particularly new here, and I don't know that we need another film about the subject of suppressed homosexuality any more than we need another film about the Holocaust. If you do want to watch a very good film featuring suppressed homosexuality, then I suggest 'Blue is the Warmest Color'. I found the characters in that film far more interesting and felt a much stronger emotional attachment to the main character. Credit to the lead actress in 'Blue Jean' for a nice performance, but it's not a film I would recommend.
The Long Game (2023)
If you've never seen another sports underdog movie...
... you might like this. Otherwise, it pretty much hits every cliche in the book. Speaking of book, I haven't read the one this story is based on, but I'm going to guess that almost none of the movie matches the true story. I found myself actually getting embarrassed while watching this because it was so corny. I can't really reveal any of the cliche's without creating spoilers, but it's safe to say that pretty much nothing in here is original. Others have mentioned the golf itself being very poorly executed, and while I don't necessarily think that's a problem given the actual golf is not really the story, I did find it rather ludicrous that in one scene, four couples play as an 'eightsome', and somehow the wife of the one character can play even though there was never any indication she'd ever swung a club in her life. And the character Cheech Marin plays is embarrassingly comical given he wasn't portrayed as being special needs.
I assume this is rated so high because it's g-rated entertainment that any family can watch together, and it might be inspiring to those of Mexican decent, but I found it so cheesy I had to down a bottle of wine with it (not really, but I could have). I'd say watch it if you just want something for the whole family that has a positive vibe, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a golf movie.
There Is a Monster (2024)
Yes there is a monster
This was an Amazon recommendation after I watched 'For Sale.' The movies aren't remotely similar, but it turned out to be a good recommendation, nonetheless. Some of the reviews have criticized the acting, but I have no idea what those reviewers expect. I found the acting here to be quite good from all involved, particularly the main character and his wife. I also thought the presentation of the photography profession was well done.
This is definitely not a horror film in the truest sense, though it does portray a very real horror that happens to many. That isn't revealed until the very end, so you'll simply have to watch it to understand.
My only annoyance with the film is that the main character wears the same thing throughout, so I'm not sure if it was filmed in a day or what the deal was. Perhaps it's supposed to represent something that I'm too stupid to figure out. Regardless, I would recommend this for the performances if nothing else.
For Sale (2024)
I was entertained
I can't recall whether I checked the rating for this on IMDB or not prior to watching it, but if I did, I'm glad I ignored it. It's far better than the current 4.9 stars. Some of the acting is rather amateurish, but that only added to my enjoyment of this film. The main characters are very good, and I found a good bit of humor in the script as well as some fairly scary moments. It's not going to give you nightmares, and probably is more in the genre of Beetlejuice (sp?), but I've seen far worse films that were rated higher. I think this was a recommendation from Amazon, and it worked for me. Definitely recommended if you want a horror comedy that's not particularly heavy on either, but is entertaining nonetheless.
Spaceman (2024)
Has there ever been a dumber love story
First, if you watch this and haven't thrown something at the television by the 100th use of the phrase 'skinny human' (which is nonsensical in its use anyway - 'human' would have sufficed), you have much more control than I do. Beyond that stupidity, the entire film is nothing more than a comically presented alien, who is apparently some great wise oracle (though its wisdom is more trite and simplistic than profound) showing a man the error of his ways in his relationship with his wife. Naturally he comes to realize that he did everything wrong (though there's never anything presented to show that he actually did anything wrong), and the movie ends as you'd expect it to. But before it does, we're treated to a hallucinogenic-like sequence that makes no sense whatsoever.
Unlike a good love story, you never care what happens to the couple, and they seem a rather odd couple to begin with.
On the positive side, there was obviously a lot of work that went into the props and special effects. I hope those folks got paid well.
I can't imagine anyone associated with this film who saw the final cut thought it was good. I was embarrassed for the actors. It would have been far better if it had been a typical Adam Sandler film and been made into a comedy. Some of it had me laughing anyway, but not enough to recommend it for that.
Camp Pleasant Lake (2024)
Better than I expected
Yes, it's silly, the sound effects are outrageous, most of the acting wouldn't hold up in community theater, and it's not very original, but I think it was essentially supposed to be all those things, and I found it a much better watch than I was expecting. I do think there should be a class in film school on how to present text messages to an audience, as this film, like most, expects the view to be able to see a shakily-filmed text in what is basically life-like size on a phone screen presented for a split second.
While I wish the kills were a bit more varied and more gory, there was certainly no shortage of them, and some were rather comical (intentionally).
Some of the acting was not bad at all, but it seems that much of the cast were likely relatives of the filmmakers and had never acted before, and you could almost see each character waiting for a turn to speak their lines, but that added to the campiness and made me laugh, so I found it entertaining.
Overall I wouldn't necessarily recommend the film, but I wouldn't call it one of the worst I've ever seen either. At least it didn't just abruptly end and make you sit there staring at the screen wondering what just happened.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Not as bad as I thought it would be
My first viewing of this film lasted about 10 minutes, and I found those 10 minutes so bad I stopped watching and thought this to be a complete flop. But when I saw that someone I knew wrote favorably of it on FB, I decided to give it another shot, and I must admit my initial impression was wrong. It did indeed pretty much follow the formula of the other films in this series (though I don't think I ever saw the third one). There was enough comedy to make you laugh on occasion and enough action to keep action fans happy, though it naturally featured people with automatic weapons not being able to hit the broad side of a barn and it pretty much followed a very familiar formula. I will say the Judge Reinhold looked a little odd. Not sure if it is due to aging or plastic, but his look didn't quite fit the old character.
Anyway, worth a watch even if you haven't seen anything else in the series, though some of the relationships won't be as interesting to you if you didn't.
Monolith (2022)
Creeped me out, and then let me down
It's hard to find a movie that actually scares me. This one was doing a good job of creeping me out, and then the final act happened, and it made no sense whatsoever. Perhaps I'm just too stupid to figure out what the ending meant, but I saw no link between it and what happened to anyone else who claimed to have received a brick in the story.
I commend Ms. Sullivan for her excellent performance regardless, though I do wonder why she had an English accent while her father had an Australian one, or maybe I'm just not as good with accents as I think I am.
Like many movies of this genre, it seems like the writer can't figure out a sensible ending, so he/she writes something that tries to fool us into thinking we're the ones with the problem if we can't figure it out. Because of the ending, I wouldn't recommend this, as that completely ruined the movie for me.
Sous la Seine (2024)
Watchable shark movie
Yes, there is some stupidity involved, but overall I thought the special effects were well done and the plot not the worst I've seen for such a film. One complaint I do have is that at the beginning, they keep switching subtitles between the bottom and top of the screen, so it's a bit difficult to not miss some dialog if you don't speak French. Like most shark films, there is an abundance of snacking on humans, but the gore factor is minimal (sadly). Many of the characters are cliche's from similar films, but I thought the performers handled the roles well. There are certainly worse films on Netflix you could waste a couple hours on. If you're a fan of shark films, I think this one should fit the bill.
Splatter Beach (2007)
Take if for what it is
Yes, the acting is terrible, the special effects are extremely low tech, and the story is about as exciting as taking a nap, but it genuinely made me laugh (intentionally) at times, and it was exactly what I expected it to be (well, I was hoping for some gore). It's the kind of movie where you suspect the actors kept their involvement a secret from family, particularly the girls who bared all, but I think the clue to the type of movie it was meant to be is in the film the one character has on the television while sleeping. I don't know if that was a real movie or not, but I suspect it very well might have been, and this film was done in that same hokey style. It wasn't meant to be high art, and it's not, but, while I wouldn't tell anyone they just had to see it, I found it more entertaining than I was expecting, and think it accomplished what it set out to.
A Family Affair (2024)
Found it entertaining
Just for context, I'm a 64-year-old, single (twice divorced - never expected the 2nd one), straight male. And I enjoy a lot of different genres of movies, including 'chick flicks'.
Anyway, while this wasn't rip-roaringly funny, I did find it intentionally amusing in parts, and thought the story, though somewhat formulaic, was well executed. I also thought all of the performances were well done.
As far as the 'plastic' goes, I'm not a big fan of the type of plastic surgery a lot of celebrities have, and I have to wonder if it's all done by the same doctor, but in an industry where success is very largely dependent on looks, I can't blame the participants for trying to extend their careers by ridding themselves of the signs of aging. And for the most part, we can blame ourselves (the audience) for that, because we don't really want to see wrinkles and imperfections on the screen.
I liked the film and would recommend it for a pleasant feel-good experience.
The Toybox (2018)
Stupid but creepy
Let me start by saying I've seen much worse movies with higher IMDB ratings, so I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn't nearly as bad as expected. Some reviews have criticized the acting, but I thought it was decent overall. A few moments made me chuckle, but the acting wasn't what made me give a 5 rating. That was based on the utter stupidity of some of the characters' actions, and the overall way the haunting was handled. Yes, it's a movie about a haunted RV, so not necessarily a logical subject, but there are moments that could have been handled much more logically and made the movie far better for its genre. No sense providing spoilers, but anyone who watches this film will likely come to the same conclusion. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend the film, I wouldn't discourage a viewing either, as it did keep me interested through the end. You could do worse for some mindless viewing.
She Came to Me (2023)
Neither Rom nor Com
Gave this a shot based on the decent reviews. Big mistake. I believe I chuckled once at Dinklage's response to a line, but other than that, there was nary a smile. And romance? The writer has no idea what romance is. Nymphomania is neither love nor romance, and Peter Dinklage would likely not be irresistible to anyone (sorry Peter, but neither would I).
I felt nothing for any of these characters except anger toward the one step-father, who didn't have a single redeeming quality. Basically, what is portrayed here are a number of relationships doomed to fail, and the viewer isn't likely to care. In the trivia section for this film, it indicates several other actors dropped out of the project when it was delayed. Lucky them. I should have dropped out half-way through my viewing and tried something else. Not so lucky me.
Medusa (2021)
El Stupido!
This is the kind of film that will appeal to the person who looks at 'black line on white canvas' at a modern art museum and thinks there's more to it than a black line on a white canvas. I should have known when I saw that this film was well-rated by critics that it would be a total loser, but I took a chance anyway. This was in the 'horror/thriller' category on the kanopy streaming service, and since I was in the mood for a horror, I thought I'd give it a shot. It was one of the more painful shots I've had in a while. Some of the scenes made no sense whatsoever, and you didn't know if they were real or dreamt, though they came across as real - real stupid. The whole premise doesn't make much sense, but far be it from me to spoil it for any poor sap who looks at the good reviews and wants to give it a watch. Perhaps if you're Brazilian it will make more sense to you, but for this senior American male, it was a complete dud. I don't often rate a movie a '1', but I honestly think that's what this deserves. You've been warned.
Dark Windows (2023)
I thought I'd be laughing at it...
... but as it turns out, I found it quite enjoyable. This showed up in my Prime recommendations, and I thought the synopsis sounded good enough to give it a watch. After all, how can you go wrong with a movie about teenagers being stalked by a mad man (though I doubt any of the actors were anywhere near teens).
The acting was quite good, but what surprised me the most was that the actions of the characters was quite logical compared to other movies in this genre. I did think it might have some good gore, but if you're looking for that, you'll be disappointed.
This is one of the rare times I didn't look at the rating of a film before watching it, and I'm glad I didn't because the low rating might have made me pass it up. I have no idea why it would receive anything less than a 6. Perhaps it simply wasn't what people expected, but in my case, it was much better.
Three Blind Mice (2023)
I was rooting for the mice at the end
Never have I wanted a main character to meet her demise more than I did watching this film. Three-quarters of her dialog was screaming and crying, and she did it in the most annoying manner possible (though I imagine I'd make some rather annoying sounds myself if I was attacked by mutant rat-people in the woods or anywhere else for that matter). I do give the film some points for make-up and gore, though it should have been more of a gorefest given how bad it was in scares. Amazingly (sarcasm intended), the characters use no logic whatsoever when fighting blind, mutants that move at the pace of a giant tortoise. Oh look, her back is turned for 10 minutes - I wonder what will happen. And the sound the mutants make is horribly annoying as well, and it doesn't look like it's even coming from them.
I needed a mind-numbing horror movie after watching a couple dramas that had me in tears, but this was just too mind-numbing and annoying to recommend.
Irish Wish (2024)
Not sure what the detractors wanted
For reference, I'm a 63-year-old straight male. I enjoy chick-flicks more than a lot of women do, it seems, and I enjoyed this one. I'm not sure if the folks who gave this under 5 stars simply have it out for Lindsay Lohan or were expecting something other than what the film wanted to be - a feel-good rom-com suited for all ages.
I know Ms. Lohan has gone through some difficult times, but I don't know that her acting was ever the problem, and I think her acting is quite good here. I found her character very appealing, as were all the characters really (well, maybe except for the author's mother, but the actress played that role well). I found the acting to be just fine across the board, and while the film wasn't a gut-buster, there were a few moments that made me laugh out loud. And the film was far less 'sappy' than many of its genre. Obviously the storyline wasn't realistic, but it also obviously wasn't supposed to be.
I've been to Ireland and the cinematography has me wanting to return.
If you're in the mood for something lite with attractive scenery and music as well as a decent storyline and performances (even if we all know what's coming), I think this will fit the bill nicely.
In the Forest (2022)
Yes, the characters do dumb stuff, but...
This isn't nearly as bad as its low rating would have you believe. I tuned in to it primarily because of the low rating, as I wanted to laugh at the stupidity, but it actually has some intentionally funny lines and wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. Yes, as in most films of this genre, the characters seem unable to fight off a foe for no particular reason and the film certainly has its share of questionable logic, but I found it watchable and, while I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, I wouldn't tell someone to ignore it either. I do think it could have been much better if it had ventured into the gore category, but that can get expensive. Overall, not nearly as bad as most of the reviews indicate - at least not to me.
The Battery (2012)
Dead battery
This came up in my "movies we think you'll like" in prime, and since it had a decent rating, I thought I'd give it a try. I was a bit reluctant when I saw it described as "art house", which often means horribly slow, but tuned in nonetheless.
For about half an hour, I was pleasantly surprised. There wasn't much action, but I found myself chuckling at quite a few scenes. And then it indeed became an art house film. I really think this was primarily made so the writer (and lead actor and director) could publicize the Indy bands he either just liked or had some connection to. It essentially devolved into the actors doing essentially nothing for long periods while the music played.
The actors obviously have friends who wrote most of these reviews. I suggest you watch grass grow rather than this tripe.
Angelique's Isle (2018)
Wish I had abandoned this snoozefest
Perhaps the worst film in this genre I've ever seen. I thought of turning it off after about an hour when nothing was happening, but decided to stick it out. I was not rewarded for my perseverance. I actually found myself hoping all the characters would perish so this yawner would end. Pretty much every other survival film out there is better. Not only was it boring, but there was never any explanation given for why the characters were abandoned in the first place and there is no real sense for how long they were abandoned. This is supposedly inspired by a true story, which means it is likely mostly made up, so the filmmakers could have added anything they wanted. Instead, we're treated to an hour and a half of funeral music accompanied by the same amount of excitement one might experience at a funeral. Waste of time.
Run Rabbit Run (2023)
From success(ion) to failure
Watched about 2/3 of this snoozefest, then went outside (at night) to watch the grass grow to see which was more exciting. The grass won. Yes, I saw all the bad reviews, but given there were a few good ones that seemed genuine mixed in, we thought we'd give it a shot. Believe the bad ones.
The only reason we had any interest in this at all was because we were huge fans of Succession. We didn't expect snook's character to be similar, but we thought she might be discriminating with her next project. Perhaps the script read better than what ended up on the screen. I have no idea how this ended, and I don't care to find out. I'm guessing it is one of those that requires great willpower to keep from throwing something at the television. Seeing as to how I'm not prepared to purchase a new TV, I think we'll just keep the ending a mystery.
Creed III (2023)
Mostly a vehicle for Mr. Jordan to show off his physique
I can't even recall if I watched creed ii, but I do recall liking the first creed, so thought I'd give this a shot. Gotta say I found it quite stale and uninspiring. It's primarily a retread of other boxing films, and the climactic bout was so predictable it was unnecessary. They really could have just shown the winner raising his hand in victory. I will say the boxing itself looked more realistic than in the rocky films, but there was still the occasional comical swing and miss.
There's also a child to add some cuteness factor, but I didn't find her roll necessary at all. And the rap music they played during the training sequences paled hugely in comparison to the rocky music, and added nothing to the inspiration aspect of those scenes. They did play a segment from rocky after the result of the last fight, but that didn't do anything to help capture the emotion in the original film.
Basically, if you want to look at Michael b. Jordan's well-defined physique, you might enjoy the film. Otherwise it falls pretty flat.
Numbers (2022)
What you should expect
All you really have to know to rate this movie is that it has Michael Madsen in it. He's one of those actors who fell into the abyss and will be in anything that he can get a paycheck for. That said, he's usually the best actor in the cast, and that's no exception here. Nonetheless, the main female character isn't bad, and I could see her doing something of a more serious nature. 'The warden' performs acceptably as well. Most of the others are comically bad, but that adds to the entertainment value of the film, as does the gore.
This is not high art, but it provides enough gore to keep it entertaining for fans of gore horror (of which I am one). I've seen other movies of this genre that try to concentrate on storytelling, and they are miserable failures.
So go into this with expectations of what a movie titled 'Death Count' would be, and you likely won't find it a complete waste of time. I've seen far worse.
