Neidentificat (2020)
Nice surprise
A very compelling strong acting and story pace make for this police procedural drama to keep you on your toes. Apart from a few blunders in the script, that make you put the whole story to question, such as victim being shot from behind, prosecutor not questioning the suspect first, happy coincidences that no witness see or hear - such as shots fired and preparations made in the hotel parking that nobody sees, etc. Small things that have the potential to ruin such an attentive to details script. But altogether a strong ensemble and atmosphere make for this to be one of the best Romanian movies in recent years. A hidden gem since the director is not part of the famous festival possee.
Babardeala cu bucluc sau porno balamuc (2021)
Overhyped worthless junk
Yet another preposterous overhyped garbage by Radu Jude. This is purely a collection of unrelated scenes that have no value for the story. But of course it is a satirical observation of the Romanian society, as they say. It's like a collection of bad sketches. Unfortunately not funny, forced, leaving you with a sense of fake by the bad acting. The director seems absorbed by randomly filming the streets of Bucharest and outdoor commercials. Endless minutes of the main character just walking the streets. Final part is essentially the entire movie story. Which is yet another bad attempt at humour, a bad TV theatre sketch with teenage jokes and. Let's not forget about the second part of the movie which is totally unrelated to the story and seems like leftovers from other projects and obsessions of Jude. So yes, it's certainly a nonconformist movie, in your face and striking at times. I love that in a movie when it's made right and has a sense of humour, as dark or dirty as it may be. This is not the case here. It's just a big mess.
Ruxx (2022)
Seems like a parody but it's not
There's no way to consistently deliver fake after fake performances, stupid dialogue and clichee after clichee. And then there's Ruxx. Actors are fine, some struggle to deliver, but they are crushed by the horrible scriptwriting. This is just bad cinema writing and if you're Romanian you can also enjoy the cheesy fake dialogues in all their glory.
Love Bus: cinci povesti de dragoste din Bucuresti (2014)
Unbelievable crap
These are film student exercises at best. Mediocre students to be fair. They are unbelievable waste of time and space, I can't even imagine why would you, even as a film student, would want to write and film such nonsensical crap. I am not exaggerating when I say that these shorts have no sense of action, story, anything. Another fun fact: all women characters in these 5 shorts seem to be victims of men.
Berliner (2020)
Waste of time and public money
Yet another Romanian crappy movie made with public money. It's got no direction, no story, no character depth, no sense. Just clichee after clichee like a sketch on a piece of paper. But at least it's got the Romanian new wave trademark of a nonsense scene of eating soup (ciorba).
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Black spaghetti western
Fun to watch but it's like seeing a jazz movie with an all white ensemble. The black Vs white is so strongly pushed during the entire movie tha is becoming hard to grasp. It's like revenge for the all white westerns back in the day. Now for a US audience this might be more meaningful, but in Europe I think it's hilarious. Other than that, nice action movie and a Postmodernist western if there's ever such a thing.
Uppercase Print (2020)
If you're into TV theater
I don't get why Radu Jude doesn't make straight documentaries. He seems passionate about historical subjects and themes, and yet he chooses to translate them into the forms of fiction cinema. The results, as is the case here, are boring and non cinematic. Here, he uses a theater play stage as vehicle for his story, mixed with communist era news clips which apparently have nothing to do with the story. Just adding context, atmosphere, whatever. The result is tedious and non watchable if you're into cinema. So either Jude likes the story and could have made a real movie on it, or he's after the historical value of the story and documents and he could've made a documentary. He chose both, so he got neither. Way to go.
Un om la locul lui (2018)
Don't waste your time
The Romanian cinema fascination of opening with a tragic event, full of impact and then lingering forever without a damn thing to move the action foward. Because there is no action and no story.
Dragoste 2. America (2018)
Cinematic nonsense
Have it 2 stars for the studied and elaborated cinematography. Other than that you're in for endless pointless dialogues on love and God, recited by actors who seem to read them from a page. No story whatsoever. But hey, at least it's nicely shot.
Last Chance U: Basketball (2021)
Gripping basketball documentary
This is so beautifully done, it had me glued to the screen. Conflict, comedy, drama it has it all and if you're also a basketball fan or player, you know it's hitting all the right spots.
Urma (2019)
Strong story, still flawed
The movie stands out from the multitude of recent Romanian crappy productions. It's well written, keeps you interested in the story. Unfortunately for a whodunnit policier, it leaves a lot of unanswered why's. No logical explanations for a few big story twists make for a a few big plotholes. Or maybe the author thought that he should artistically leave it for the audience to figure it all out. Enjoyable movie altogether.
Dragoste 1: Câine (2018)
Wasted
Story is broken. Luckily, it's beautifully shot, so at least you could linger on the images. You will be waiting and praying to get a sense of the story, which starts as a quest for the truth, a love story, and then predictibly ends up in a blurry mess. You won't get it. I laughed out loud finding out that the lead actress got awarded as best actress in a leading role in Romania for this part. What a joke 😂
Zavera (2019)
Waste of time (and public money)
Classic Romanian film about nothing. 40 minutes into the movie and no direction, conflict or character sense whatsoever. Just minutes of film passing by. Got about 250k Euro from the state to be develiped, though. Nice catch.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Wtf is with the horrible reviews?
I really don't get the awful reviews spread around here. This is a dark raunchy comedy, not at its best for sure, but it has its moments. What did so many people expect from this movie?
Soldatii. Poveste din Ferentari (2017)
Story going nowhere
I guess as a real lifestory, such as this, it has to feel rather extraordinary, but as a script of a film story it's bland. Amateur actors add to the mess.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Poor Tarantino-esque atempt
It's trying but it's not getting there. It's not easy to have the dialogue intensity and the detail cleverness of a Tarantino movie. Unfortunately it is lingering on and it's getting boring.
Kalifat (2020)
Pretty addictive, oversimplified
First of all, the depiction of the Swedish secret service is a comedy in itself. It's an addictive show, but oversimplifying things. The only aspect that it tries to take care of is how teenage Muslims are fooled into extremism. Other than that, it just flies over things, characters, no trying to deepen the context or motivations. And once again, the Swedish forces are depicted as a joke in this show.
The Witcher (2019)
Why all the fuss?
Barely got through the first episode. Very boring, bad acting, unending dialogue about nothing of interest.
Apostle (2018)
Unbelievably stupid
The horror turns to comedy when the sheer stupidity of the story, details and dialogue unravels. Starts ok and has a lot of potential but turns into disaster.
Zimna wojna (2018)
Cinematic gem, superficial story
The cinematography is beautiful, like a painting in black and white. But the story is really superficially told, no way for the viewer to relate or to even care for what's going on with the characters. I doubt that the western audience can even relate to the communist background of the story as this too is superficially depicted. Just a simple love story in beautiful B&W shots.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Gave it half hour, what a waste
I'm a fan of Anderson, watched all of his movies, but this one is a mess. After half hour still not going anywhere narratively. Thumbs up for the animation, but really you can't just survive on Anderson jokes and clichés on social segregation.
American Honey (2016)
Felt like I was cheated
One of the very rare times that I hate the author of a movie for spoiling a pretty good job with a dumb ending. I really enjoyed the movie, with all its bellies that should have been cut off for being repetitive and narratively worthless. It's got its atmosphere, it's rhythm. Then comes the ending. Or not. One of the cases when the author doesn't have a clue how to end its story and just lets it die on its own. A pitty.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Major flop from the Coens
Seems like a collection of scrambled ideas from the Coens. They didn't know what to do with them and they patched them altoghether. Very tedious, some longue and pointless dialogues. There are some good parts and you can recognize the good old Coen dark humour and taste for parody, but that is just about it. Big letdown.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Major flop
This movie is bad in so many ways I can't even start to describe it. The high critics reviews are a joke. You know where the story goes ages before it does, tons of screen time wasted for cheesy and not really interesting dialogue.
Hackerville (2018)
Bad bad bad
Very lame story from Hbo Europe, I don't get why they invest money in such stupid scriptwriting and acting. Every depiction and action of hacking, police work, bad guys is simply unrealistic and ridiculous. A big waste of time and resources.
