Penny Serenade (1941)

I remember the first time I ever watched this movie back in 1992 in Stone Mt. GA, with an uncle of mine. He was in his late 60's, at the time, & I never spoke to him about his past. He'd never seen this movie before either, to my surprise. He was a HUGE CLASSIC MOVIE, GUY , he literally would sit in his lazy-boy, & watch old movies ALL DAY, FOR YEAR'S !!!!! At the end, of the show, the old guy wiped away a tear. ( so, did I) We never discussed it. I have no ideal what he may have experienced as a young man. But, whenever I watch this film, I always remember that tear. He's long passed, since. I LLLLLOOOOVVVVEEEEEE Cary Grant in this mode. He didn't visit this side of his personality very often in his illustrious film career. He's not a big shot here. He's a newspaper man, but he's not "Walter Burns." ( from, "His Girl Friday.") Burn's would consume this guy for an aperitif. Grant's hero here is as close as Grant ever got on film to a Jimmy Stewart/ Gary Cooper/ Joel McCrea 1940's every man. ( in fact, it's amazing to me that this is not a James Stewart/ Margaret Sullivan picture. This film would haGrant play's made a really sweet fit for that couple) Grant plays
a really nice guy, who takes life on chances, & on whim's. He meets his future wife,( Irene Dunne) because a record skips when he's on his way to,,,,,,( I dunno, wherever it was he was going he never makes it.) He's continually, misinterpreting, & misjudging situations. He just continually
does s#@t out of the blue !!!!! It's all, fine, & dandy, for a beautiful, young man, alone without any real responsibilities,,,,,,but, what happens due to his negligence over time- , to his wife, & child,,,,,,,,it ain't so hot. Principally, Cary Grant's character in this movie, needs to grow the f#@k up,,,,,,& he needs to do it fast !!!!!! No spoilers, but just enjoy the movie, I guarantee you will be moved, & probably she'd a tear or two in recognition of your own faults, & mishaps, along the way.

Meet John Doe (1941)
10/10
This movie is 3rd. In a kind of block of Frank Capra's revolving around pitiless politician's, Mythic everymen out of America's heart-land, dubious political shenanigans, & ( two having dominant Christmas themes, three have "Girl-Friday's", who strongly hint at the feminist who were to come 20 years later, under Betty Frieden. In two, the heroe falls into suicidal-depression.) The issue is, no one in the opening reels of this one is truly sympathetic, not even "Long John Willoughby, " / Gary Cooper. Everyone's in on a pretty dubious scheme to swindle the public, under the false assumption of a suicide declaration. It's pretty dark, & dismal, & dismaying, only, Capra, at his best had a surface facility that shimmered, & sparkled, & completely enchanted the senses despite, the unsavory nature of the substance of the dilemma. Capra's (warning,,,,????) The audience of the vagaries of the press, & it's nefarious relationships with manipulative political strong-men, & he's also, offering the viewer a complicity, & testing the audience's willingness to comply, or resist the easy temptation, ( to get your arm, repaired for the bush-leagues.) Only, Walter Brennan show's any honesty, & integrity, until well into the film's middle-section , where Barbara Stanwyck grows a heart, "Long John," grows a pair, & the public, enters the fray. Capra, realizes that the media, is transformative, & lousy, & cruel, it makes or breaks democracy's, & public insight, & even, History. The movies first half plays into this reality, & the audience understands, & supports this quandary to a certain extent. "John Doe's," middle, call's, the audience to the rug, & nearly, demands, a coming to reckoning with these arbitrary forces, from you, the viewer. It's emotional, & powerful, & damning, & it is masterfully, rendered, by Cap, Cooper, Stanwyck, Eddie Arnold, & James Gleason. The viewer, realizes suddenly, that he's sort of been played. This call to conciousness, isn't for Long John Willoughby, or Barbara Stanwyck, it's for THEE, THE VIEWER !! If I can break away, & say a word or two about the late, Great Eddie Arnold. This guy,,,,,,this guy,,,,there used to be a term to describe certain allotted characters in a movie. Arnold, often fell under, characters" that you loved to hate." & Damn it, I love the guy, but here, & in, Capra's, "Mr. Smith," ,,,, OMG,,,,,I WISH I COULD REACH THROUGH THE SCREEN, & CHOKE HIM !!!!! Doe," is probably, only tangentially a "Christmas movie,." It's accredited as one, comes around every December, with the mistletoe,
& the fruit-cake, but, if this is a Christmas movie, it's the darkest one in History. In "John Doe," "Wonderful life's, "Pottersville, " is more or less the rule of law. No, "Zuzu,'s, petal's," here. "John Doe," is closer to an early run-through of, "A face in the Crowd," than, "It' is to a Wonderful life. " personally, I can see Trump Supporters, in the bleachers, of the "John Doe," movement in this film. With the red-pilled, bumpkin-leader, fighting the "D. B," Norton's", ( Biden), &the venom of the press, & the Deep-State, forcibly, shutting down the populace, for a fascist tyranny. Sorry, that's just the way my mind runs. Gary Cooper, & Barbara Stanwyck, are just,,,,,,WOW,,,,,!!!!!! THESE TWO ARE, MOVIE-STAR'S !!!!! It's why, their both so beloved, even decades after their death's. Unfortunately, in 2020, these turmoil, still exist. In 2020, the "DB" Norton's have learned how to rig elections.
Ziegfeld Girl (1941)
10/10
I would not have recognized James Stewart if he were not listed. The movie was from 1941, before December 7, 1941 and Pearl Harbor and then the War. He surely looked different after the War. I believe he became a General in the War.
I couldn't help thinking about that, and the fact that the beautiful Hedy Lamar did undercover work during the War and also made some scientific inventions that helped win the War.
I think it is strange that as the movie came on, Stewart's name was the top one listed before the three girls. His part was rather small compared to the girls and other men in the movie.
I loved the movie!
They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
