Symphonie einer Weltstadt (1950)
A major disappointment!
Those of you hoping to get real insight into the old Berlin will be as disappointed as I was after trying to watch this long and boring film! I even left before the end, something I rarely do, because I was fed up with watching the birds, the zoo animals and the children swimming, while getting no new information about a great city. I wanted to see the architecture before the massive destruction of WW2 and got very little of it. The film was shot in the '50s, so they could have contrasted the before and after periods of important monuments and buildings, but they failed to do this.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Just don't let him write the scenario!!!
Of course Lynch is a visual genius, but why doesn't someone just sabotage his computer so that he can't write his own scenarios anymore? I personally find him at his best when filming someone else's story, e.g. "the straight story" or "elephant man".
Mortel transfert (2001)
Will be a great video!
I came out of the cinema saying this was an OK film, no more. Better than staying at home Saturday evening. I actually laughed a lot, but I somehow still had the impression that I would have been a great video to rent. It did have a few surprising twists, but something was missing... What?
La stanza del figlio (2001)
Hollywood could learn so much...
Thank you Nanni Moretti for such a touching human experience. At no point during this emotionally powerful film did I feel manipulated like most Hollywood productions dealing with sensitive issues try to do. Completely human, very sad, yet no totally depressing, with a faint but nevertheless shining ray of hope.
