... Of course, we are understanding the irritating, pointless, annoying side story characters ... are based on truth? Been enjoying the settings and the positivity pouring forth when the main characters are actually 'doing their thing'. However, by episode 9, I'm utterly sick of the back stories of Coco Channel's long time friend, her 'bad smell' associates from the losing side of WWII (!) and the fact that from episode 1, we still haven't seen Coco Channel actually doing anything she's supposed to be world renowned for. Literally, she's made nothing. No dresses, no perfume, not even a cup of coffee. And yet the money keeps pouring in ... and her annoying anti-friends keep hanging around and cropping up like ... whatever. I really don't give a damn about the stupid no.5 court case or her ill advised personal choices of friends and 'associates'. Back and peripheral stories that could be dealt with in two minutes and detract fully from the point of this show. The other couture designers stories would be infinitely more interesting to follow. The battles of the generation of designers and 'houses'. But - am happy to say, the Christian Dior character, by contrast and various 'back' and 'peripheral' stories - are actually most entertaining, wonderful and eminently watchable ... for the most-part. I guess it's the Dior character I'm watching this strange agglomeration for then? He does actually make stuff and draw and design. And we see it. Thus, this show, in terms of writing, is a really strange mix. It's like on the one hand watching good stories and on the other watching, painful, anti-entertainment.
I watched the 1980's tv series as a teenager in the 1980's and remember being captivated by the show then. This latest Disney series, of some 44 years later, is vastly superior as you'd except for the industry improvements, budgets, craft skills and resources available these days. But on top of that, this show is ... just beautiful. Beautiful acting, beautiful sets, beautiful dialogue, beautiful writing and script work, beautiful timing and pacing, beautiful pre-production, beautiful art department work, beautiful post production, beautiful directing, producing, editing, score, sound-track, costuming and on and on and on. Absolutely perfect. Yes please. Lots and lots more shows just like this. This one is the meter and measure for all the rest. No excuses! By-the-way, I know from the 1980's series there's more to this story. Will there be any more series for Shogun? Part of me would want to read the book, but wouldn't want to ... prejudice my enjoyment of any more of this tv series ...
