Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy (2012)
Bizarre......
This is either total rubbish or a work of genius. This reviewer reckons it's the latter. On first viewing I thought "What? Can I have some of what he's been smoking please?" but as the series progressed I started to warm to it.I watched it again on Catch Up (Virgin cable...) and it started to click into place. It actually frightens me that I'm starting to "get it",as a shrink would probably have Noel sectioned after a rummage inside THAT brain. Some of the sketches are hit'n'miss, but most of Python was utter mince and it's supposedly a classic of comedy. The characters are seriously strange as you'd expect (it IS Noel after all) but some, such as Dondylion, are deeper than you'd think. There's no middle ground, you'll either love it or loath it,but at least give it a chance. Now,when's the DVD coming out?
Bro'Town (2004)
Sweet as,bro!
I caught the first episode of Bro'Town on a flight from Heathrow to NZ.Didn't expect a huge amount but I was bored (It's a loooong flight.....).Was I ever wrong?I laughed.Long and hard, loud enough to annoy other passengers.Okay, there were a few things I didn't get (the whole Brother Ken thing for example, but after Googling.....)but on the whole I found it hilarious,as did my wife who watched it as well.So much so that we bought all three seasons on DVD when we arrived in NZ.I will admit that it has its ups and downs, but show me something that hasn't.As for being offensive to minority stereotypes, get real, they have a go at EVERYONE,including we Scots! I doubt it'll ever be shown on British TV but who cares? We've got the DVDs! To quote (South African stereotype) Joost Van Der Van Van-"Masterful Rex,masterful!"
Caché (2005)
What was that about?
I don't pretend to be a genius, but I'm not stupid.Having read some of the reviews here I must have seen a completely different film...... I like French cinema, they have made some excellent films, but they have also made (if you'll pardon the expression) some complete and utter mince!Unfortunately to my mind Cache falls into the latter category.Daniel Auteuil is a fine actor,he can turn his hand to comedy (The Closet),action (36) and serious drama (Jean De Floret and Manon De Source),but this was a total waste of his talents.I saw this film in Edinburgh at the Filmhouse, the cinema was full, but at the end I did not hear ANY positive comments from the audience, quite the opposite.I felt like asking for my money back and I was not alone. Possibly one of the most boring, tedious films I have ever had the displeasure of suffering.Or maybe I am stupid.......
Your Cheatin' Heart (1990)
Sex,drugs & violence in Glasgow's Country scene....
Watched this John Byrne gem when it was broadcast on the BBC,enjoyed it but, like many others, was a bit mystified. I got a DVD of the series this Christmas (not saying where from, cough cough) watched it again and I'm still mystified!Seriously though, the script is excellent as is the acting, but I'm not sure how much of the dialogue will be understood by non-Scots.Their loss though.
Many of the cast,Ken Stott especially.have gone on to bigger things.
Although I am not really a fan of C&W,the music is generally very listen-able,Eddi Reader's singing stands out. About time the BEEB released this officially.
