Fatal Attraction (1987)
A warning to cheaters
I saw this last night for the first time, having heard so much about it, and I definitely think the talk was justified. The performances were great, and the characters were developed enough so the audience could feel something for them. It also has perfectly placed suspense, and it's a moral tale. Everyone here knows the plot - a happily married lawyer played by Douglas spends a steamy weekend with Close's character, Alex, who becomes obsessed with him and won't let him go. Although Alex takes things to the extreme with this obsession, she does make a valid point - if Dan was so happy with his wife and child, what was he doing with her? If he didn't want to lose his family, maybe he should've thought of them before sleeping with her in the first place. Dan also makes the valid point that Alex knew he was married and he made no promises to her. But saying that before sex is one thing, and afterward is another. Yes, Alex was just as much a part of the affair as Dan, but he had a lot more to lose: his family.
Nine (2009)
terrible
I'm only writing this review to warn people against wasting their time seeing this miserable excuse for a musical. You have a so-called "brilliant" Italian director (who obviously isn't even really Italian) and I for one didn't understand what made him so brilliant. To me, he just looked like a washed-up old has been, and THIS guy has all these beautiful women groveling at his feet? Huh??? So, anyway, he's trying to make a new movie, but failing (haha life imitating art, because the movie itself fails). The songs are terrible, it's as if someone played a game called "let's see how many times we can get the word 'Guido' into a song". So basically you get to watch a character you don't even like or care about fall apart, resulting in quite possibly the worst musical I've ever seen. Not even Judi Dench could save this one. Give it a miss. BORING
Mamma Mia! (2008)
good, but could've been better
I love ABBA. I'm a huge fan, having grown up listening to them with my parents. So that automatically makes Mamma Mia a must-see for me. I loved the stage play, it was fabulous. So I guess maybe I went into the movie with expectations that were too high, because I was let down...a little bit. I mean it was a lot of fun, the scenery was gorgeous, but I think they definitely could've got better singers. Amanda Seyfried has a lovely voice, hers was definitely the best in my opinion, and Meryl's was probably the next best I think, but the others left something to be desired. And the Choreography!!! wow. I'm sorry I didn't think it was very good at all. It was a bit, for lack of a better description, all-over-the-place. Overall, it's a feel-good time waster but in my opinion the stage show was definitely better, and anyone who loved the show will probably be a little disappointed.
Speaking of Sex (2001)
actually pretty funny
yeah, sure it's very screwball. But people should just take SoS for what it is and laugh with it. I did, and very much enjoyed it. All the performances were good, I thought Lara Flynn Boyle, Bill Murray and Catherine O'Hara were excellent. But I can't believe no one has mentioned Megan Mullally's performance. Well, she is a favourite of mine, so I'll admit a bias there, but she was good, incredibly sexy. I thought she fitted the role really well and added the little something extra this movie needed. A lot of the lessons in the movie can be taken into real life - that communication and honesty are the keys to a successful marriage. And I also like happy endings. Overall I thought it was an easy time-waster and a good laugh.
Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
hilarious!
From my Australian perspective, this movie offered an interesting insight, if somewhat satirical, into the American pagent industry. But it has a good message at the same time - cheating doesn't always get you what you want; and when your dremas seem to disappear, there will always be another way for things to work out. Sure, it was cliche, but at the same time it was so poignant.
All the cast members performed well in their roles. But I have to say the shining light was ALLISON JANNEY!!!!! She stole every single scene she was in, she had all the best lines AND she pulled it off with a certain style at the same time, although she was cast as trailer trash.
Anyway, highly recommended, a great, fun watch.
Friday (1995)
one of the WORST movies i have ever seen
Is this even a movie? Nothing happens - it's so boring! I kept waiting for a plot, and I didn't get one. SO SLOW! A disgusting scene with a guy on a toilet, Chris Tucker acting high all the time and dramatic music whenever the big mean guy comes on the screen. Oh, throw in a joke about a blind date with a fat woman. And we're supposed to laugh? PLEASE! I really thought people were smart enough to see through this, but obviously I was wrong, judging by all the comments of the people who apparently loved this movie. But hey, this is just my opinion, each to their own. My advice? Save your money and see a real movie. Or even better, go buy a drink, it'll make you feel better.
There's Something About Mary (1998)
there's nothing about this movie
I have no idea why people think this is such a great movie. Most of the time I just felt sorry for Ben Stiller's character. The gags were just stupid. I didn't find them funny at all. Extremely stupid, unfunny, predictable and a waste of my time. I don't think there is any more to say. Except I guess it does say something about guys' attention spans that Cameron Diaz alone can hold them for a whole movie...
The Rundown (2003)
I was so surprised
First of all, I hate wrestling. I'm not a fan of The Rock. I thought Dude, Where's My Car was pointless, and I used to think Sean William Scott played the same character in every movie. Until I saw this one. He's still got his stupid, funny side with this character but this character goes a bit deeper. I wasn't looking forward to this movie at all, but it turned out to be awesome! Great scenery, lots of action. Sure, The Rock and SWC should've died about 50 times, but still. It's a movie. You can't expect compliance with reality. Just go and appreciate it for what it is: a fun time. It's great.
A Little Princess (1995)
Get me a bucket!
Maybe I'm just cynical, but what a piece of soppy, american junk! And it's not even an American story. It could be a lesson in bad acting, as every single actor over emphasised EVERYTHING. And the way events in the story were portrayed...well, I was watching it with a 9 year old girl I was babysitting and even she said "Yeah, right. That wouldn't happen." I just think that the movie should've stayed true to the book more, and in the book she goes to London. And her father dies. I don't think any of the Little Princess movies have kept that part in. But anyway, my view - stay away!
Degrassi Junior High (1987)
i can't believe people genuinely like this show....
I was really little when this show first came out and my mum didn't let me watch TV. But I saw a re-run on cable the other night, I was watching it with a kid i was babysitting, and I couldn't stop myself from bursting out laughing. It was sooo terrible! Man i think this might just be the worst tv show ever, aside from Passions. This was spike: "(slumps shoulders in a really exaggerated manner) they don't allow pregnant girls at degrassi" and her friends: "oh, that's like so terrible" spike :"(turns around, pretending to be dramatic, and has head in the air) I'll get my year, you wait and see" SAVE US ALL!!!!
Japanese Story (2003)
bad, like most Australian films
I am Australian, I'll just clear that up first. But I have to say the majority of Australian films are terrible and this is one of them. (spoilers ahead - so if you are crazy and want to see this movie, don't read on).
Three words: I hated it. This movie dragged and nothing really happened. The only thing it had going for it was the scenery. There had to be a lot of scenery because there was no script and no real plot. But this is the plot I could put together: Japanese businessman comes to Australia, for some reason that noone knows and we never find out. He gets taken into the desert by an Australian geologist, and she also has no idea who this guy is or what he's doing here. They end up sleeping together and this apparently makes him a better husband to his wife at home...hmmm, I don't understand that one. Then he dies so she takes the dead body across the desert in the back of her 4WD until she can find a morgue. The last half hour or so of the movie is Toni Collette crying. She has nothing else to do because there is no script. It's not really her fault. She did the best she could with what she was given. The scene where she was trying unsuccessfully to put the guy's dead body in the back of the car bordered on comical.
My adivse, give it a miss. I don't know how anyone could like it.
The Parent Trap (1998)
totally unrealistic...
but still a sweet movie. I don't know how susceptible boys would be to it... but, all the same, if you're looking for something to kill some time and you want to just sit back and go "awww" at the end, then this is the movie to see. Disney knows what it's doing and does it well.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
The Jane Russel show....and loving it!
I loved this movie, and I love Marilyn Monroe, but I agree with the previous comment made by Jason John Sanicki - Jane Russel steals the show. She's a great singer and she's definitely no pushover! She's gorgeous too. That aside, I loved this movie and they both did a great job.
Half Past Dead (2002)
wished I was dead
Well, I don't even know how this movie ended, because I walked out, but I didn't really care. It was the last movie in a movie marathon that I was seeing, and I'm so glad they put it last because that made it even easier to walk out. Enough said
The Pianist (2002)
Makes The Hours look like a Disney Cartoon
This movie truly moved me in a way no movie ever has. Even now, the next day, I still haven't recovered. I used to play the piano and it really puts complaining about piano practice into a whole new perspective. It was so real, which made it even more disturbing; it really brought home the fact that the holocaust actually happened. Of course everyone knows it did, but the horror was brought to life by Roman Polanski. Noone else could have done that, bravo to him. ps Adrien Brody is my new hero.
The Hours (2002)
what an emotional marathon!
Dear God, this movie sapped every single bit of emotional energy out of me! At the end, I just sat there going "ugh." I had no energy to even really talk afterwards. That's not to take away from the performances, all three leads were brilliant and I think Ed Harris is very underrated. But I wouldn't have the strength to see it again.
Dead Man Walking (1995)
Late recognition for Susan
Susan Sarandon is, for lack of a better word, incredible. In my opinion (and yes I do understand that not everyone will agree with me here), she is one of the greatest actresses EVER and should have at least 2 oscars to her credit. I mean, that was an AMAZING performance in Lorenzo's Oil (but then I think every performance of hers is amazing) and they gave it to Emma Thompson...what was that about??? And by the time she got this oscar, she'd been in the industry for some 25 years. I couldn't think of anyone who deserved it more, especially for a performance as brilliant as her portrayal of Sister Helen Prejean. But then again, she is over and above all the artificiality of Hollywood and doesn't need an oscar - people know she's good anyway.
This film carries some very deep, thought-provocing messages, so needless to say it is not to be taken lightly. Tim Robbins, of course, can't escape credit here. You would think that, because of his person feelings against the death penalty, the portrayals made in this movie wouldn't be accurate. However, both sides of the death-penalty debate are given even weight. On one side, you see the interesting side of Matthew, the human side which makes witnessing his death rather heart-wrenching. At the same time, you see the way he savaged his victims and the constant torment of the understandably grief-stricken parents. One word for Tim - BRAVO.
A brilliant movie and, like I said, a well-deserved and long awaited oscar for Susan.
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Bravo Susan - you've done it again!!
What can I say? This movie is simply brilliant. Susan Sarandon gives a flawless performance as Louise and I was hardly surprised, after her performances in such movies as Rocky Horror, Atlantic City and Bull Durham. She's a bankable actress and the best in the game, as far as I'm concerned. Geena Davis is also the perfect Thelma and the two just go together so well. Male bashing? I don't think so - Jimmy was so sweet and I felt real sympathy for the policeman Hal as well. I've seen this movie countless times and know it word for word, but I've never tired of it. A good movie for a girl's night in.
Lorenzo's Oil (1992)
Susan shines and who would expect any less??
Susan Sarandon is one of the greatest actresses ever, in my opinion. Some may not agree, but I would surely have a strong argument, with her performance in Lorenzo's Oil as my just part of my evidence. I have come to expect a lot of Susan, after her performances in Rocky Horror, Bull Durham and Thelma & Louise and she didn't disappoint me here. As Michaela Odone, the mother of Lorenzo, who has a terminal disease ALD, she perfectly skates that fine line between being a caring parent and a crazed mother obsessed with keeping her son alive, and if the nurses don't like it, too bad. Even Michaela's own sister is told to leave, because she thinks Michaela is losing it. Susan exquisitely shows the pain and sacrifice of a mother watching her son deteriorate while she is basically powerless to stop it. "How can I enjoy anything when he enjoys nothing?" This question truly reveals Michaela's agony. I think she was criminally robbed of an oscar. I would watch this movie for her performance alone. However, this is not all the movie has to offer. Nick Nolte also delivers as the father, Augusto, showing a slightly different angle with his side of the story. Together, they create what I consider to be a masterpiece. 10/10
The Client (1994)
SUSAN SARANDON - YOU ARE TRULY BRILLIANT
I mean, when a movie has Susan Sarandon, it really needs nothing else as far as I'm concerned. She is just the best and there are no words to describe her talent. She just shines. Put this together with great acting by Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro and you have one hell of a movie. Parker also puts in a great performance. I love the rapport between Susan and Tommy, it's just so funny while being clever and witty at the same time. I will admit a slight bias (Ok, MASSIVE bias, but that's not the point) when I say that I enjoyed the movie more than the book. SEE THE MOVIE!! I read the book after seeing the movie and I was greatly disappointed. Had I read the book first, I never would have pictured Susan in the role of Reggie, but I'm forever grateful that she was cast, because she brings a certain spark to the role (as she does with all her roles) that noone else could have done and she really brings out the strong side of Reggie's character. So, I'll just end this with 2 words - SUSAN SARANDON - and leave it at that.
Crossroads (2002)
I don't know how bad Glitter was, but........
this would have to be DAMN near as bad, because I heard Glitter was terrible and so was this. In one word - PATHETIC. I mean, it's Britney Spears, what more needs to be said? I was dragged along and I didn't really want to see it. I shouldn't have gone. I definitely agree with the previous comment from the person who said it was a pile of vomit and my recommendation to everyone is - save yourselves the TORTURE!!!!!!!!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
an absolute classic - timeless
Well, what can I say? This is a great movie in so many ways. I've been singing "Dammit Janet" ever since I saw this masterpiece. I can't pinpoint what makes it so good. Maybe its the fact that its so bad, its good. It was watching this movie that Susan Sarandon became my favourite actress of all time and I have now seen sooo many of her movies. I think it's hard not to love her innocence and beauty in this movie. She's said in several interviews that out of all her movies, this will be the one that makes it into the Time Capsule and I agree with her. She's just so beautiful.
And Tim Curry? He IS Frank'n'Furter. Noone could have played that role like him, so BRAVO!!! Richard O'Brien said that women have come up to him saying that they were turned on by Tim Curry in fishnets and platforms and I have to admit, I was one of them. Richard O'Brien, of course, can't escape credit here. With great songs such as "Time Warp" and "Hot Patootie" it is obvious that he has a great mind. Also very creepy as Riff-raff
The 'coolest' character in this movie, I would say, would have to be Columbia despite her tripping during her tapdance. Her sequined coat and hat...she's just the best. Magenta, Brad, Doctor Scott and Eddie, all are perfect in their roles. The movie could not have been made without Charles Gray - great work for someone without a neck.haha!! (Anyone who has done the audience participation thing will get that joke and if you haven't DO IT!! Audience participation makes the movie!!)
Overall a personal fav
Anyone who has a prob with the Transvestite thing should get a life!
Bull Durham (1988)
All Hail Susan!!!!!
I have to say, I absolutely love this movie. I became a huge fan of Susan Sarandon about a year ago and have always admired her acting. But this movie really shows the strength of her talent. Out of all her movies that i have seen (and that's A LOT) Bull Durham would have to be my favourite. And I also think Susan is at her best as Annie Savoy. She shines througout. I think it helps that Annie has the 3 s's going for her - she's smart, sassy and sexy. And she ain't bad at baseball either!
The male leads also do an excellent job. Tim Robbins is perfect as the young, cocky Nuke and Kevin Costner also gives a standout performance as his teacher, Crash Davis. They seem to compliment eachother with their differences and it's really refreshing.
My favourite seen would have to be the table-top scene at the end, and the past-lives discussion that preceeds it. It also features one of the sexiest scenes of all time at the end, giving movies like 9 1/2 weeks a run for their money.
Overall, it's a mixture of sex, love, magic and baseball. A must see.
Full Frontal (1993)
can you say "Fast Forward?"
I'm sorry, even though Full Frontal was one of the funniest shows on television, all it really did was copy what Fast Forward was doing about 5 years or so earlier. Fast Forward did it better too. So, nothing really original here. It was still funny though.
Safe Passage (1994)
very touching
I thought this was an excellent movie. It dealt with very real-life situations in a way that was more human than the way most movies try to deal with similar situations. Susan Sarandon is my favourite actress and never fails to be outstanding. This was no exception. Highly recommended.
