House of the Dragon (2022)
Entertaining
Game of Thrones was one of my favorite shows of all-time so I couldn't wait for House of the Dragon. After just finishing it I can tell you it's fantastic! While it's not as good as Game of Thrones it's still very good in its own right. It's already another hit for HBO. I've never read the books to these shows so I had no expectations when it came to that but I wouldn't care if it varied from the source material even if I did. I don't get why so many people care if a movie/show is different from the source material. As long as it's entertaining...who cares? They have to adapt these books for the screen. The first few episodes may start a little slow for some as they build these characters and the world they live in but stick with it because it definitely pays off. This is definitely one of the best new shows of the last few years and I'm looking forward to more seasons in the future.
The Acolyte (2024)
Did not meet my expectations
Even though the reviews for The Acolyte have been mostly mixed I was still really looking forward to this ever since I first heard about it because I'm a Star Wars fan. Then I saw the trailers and my excitement grew even more but I have to say after watching the first few episodes of this season I have to agree with most and say that this is mostly forgettable. Even though I know better I'll probably still give it a few more episodes to see if it gets better. If you're a Star Wars fan like myself then you should probably give this a try to see for yourself but don't go into it having high expectations because it won't live up to it.
1923 (2022)
Love It
1923 is the next prequel to Yellowstone after 1883 and like those two shows this is just as incredible! As a huge fan of those two shows I was really looking forward to this and it did not disappoint! It continues to follow the Dutton family and show how they created the Yellowstone ranch. This obviously takes place in 1923 during prohibition and the Great Depression. It's another gritty western from Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan is one of the best things going on television right now, everything he touches turns to gold. Just look at his resume (Yellowstone, 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Sicario, Hell or High Water, etc.). Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren lead an amazing cast who are all at their best here. I can't wait until Season 2 comes out and I'd be shocked if this show doesn't end up winning numerous awards.
Dark Matter (2024)
Can't wait to see what happens next
Dark Matter is an original and suspenseful sci-fi that will keep you interested throughout the season. The story is about a man named Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) who gets abducted into an alternate version of his life. To get back to his family he'll have to go through countless versions of his what his life could've been. It's like his very own multiverse. And while there are more and more shows/movies on the multiverse, this one actually feels original. The show has so many twists and turns and takes you into so many different directions that you can't wait to see what happens next. I'll tell you what, Apple TV+ is absolutely killing it. Almost all of their shows have been great. Only a couple of their originals are what I consider bad. I'd put Dark Matter somewhere in the middle. Thats not a bad thing considering how many great shows they have.
Presumed Innocent (2024)
Will keep you guessing
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who is accused of killing his mistress. When county prosecutor Carolyn Polhemus is viciously murdered, Rusty takes the case without disclosing his relationship to her because he just reconciled with his wife (Ruth Negga). He's working for the States Attorney (Bill Camp), who's in a reelection campaign. After they lose, Rusty's rival Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), who hates Rusty and uncovers his relationship with the victim as all the evidence points toward him. From there the show is a guessing game of who the killer with plenty of twists and turns. I'd definitely recommend this, just for Gyllenhaal's performance alone.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
The worst of the Marvel shows but still worth watching
I have to admit I'm a huge fan of Marvel so I always look forward to everything they do and so She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was no different. It's definitely the worst of all the Marvel shows but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. It's different from the other Marvel shows and movies as this is a comedy but that doesn't make it bad, just different. Even though it's my least favorite but that's only because I love the other shows so much...not because this is bad. I don't understand some of these negative reviews. What did you expect and not get? Did you not watch the trailers or read the reviews? You knew it was a comedy going in. Tatiana Maslany does a great job as She-Hulk and Jennifer Walters. It wouldn't be the same with another actress. I also loved all the cameos from Hulk, Daredevil, Wong, Abomination, etc. Don't let the negative reviews deter you from watching this, if you're a Marvel fan then watch this.
For All Mankind (2019)
Amazing
I have to say that I enjoyed For All Mankind a lot more than I thought I would. It's actually become one of my favorite new shows of the last few years. It's a sci-fi mystery thriller that takes you down the road of "what if" during the space races. While the show does has its flaw overall it is a very good show. The writing and acting are all terrific, especially Joel Kinnamon. The use of actual footage and real events just make the story that much better. Each episode gets better and better. I put off watching it for some reason and I'm now binging all 3 seasons and can't stop. If you're a sci-fi fan and have been putting it off like me...stop! Go watch this as soon as possible because I promise you won't be disappointed.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
I thought it was pretty good
I've been looking forward to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ever since I first heard about it. Then I saw the trailer and my excitement grew even more. I can say without a doubt that this series did not disappoint. First of all, Kurt Russell is in this. That's reason enough to watch it alone. His son Wyatt also stars. But throw in Godzilla and other monsters and you have a hit. This series digs into the Monarch agency and their role in keeping these monsters under control. It also shows how everyday people are affected by these monsters being let loose on the world and the role it takes. It takes place in two different time frames, the 50's and today. It's gotten great reviews by both critics and fans as it currently has a 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
His Dark Materials (2019)
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would
My brother and I just started watching His Dark Materials recently and I have to say I actually ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Because we put it off for so long we were able to binge watch all 3 seasons and didn't have to wait years between seasons. I prefer to binge watch anyway because I take in more of the story that way but I'm really glad I didn't have to wait year's between seasons on this show, it made more enjoyable to binge it. Everything about this show was top notch (everything on HBO usually is), the writing, acting, visuals, all of it was great! It starts a little slow while they build their world and characters but I don't mind that because it makes you more invested in the show overall.
Ahsoka (2023)
Could've been better but it's still worth watching
Ahsoka may not the best thing from Star Wars that I've seen but it's still worth watching. I was really looking forward to this when I first read about it and the even more so after I saw the trailers. It did not disappoint! I don't consider myself a huge Star Wars fan but I'm a normal fan who does enjoy most of them. Like by most, I really liked The Mandalorian and Andor. I thought those two are some of the best things Star Wars has put out since the original trilogy. I even thought The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi were both worth watching. I don't understand most of these negative reviews, it's like most of the people writing them didn't want to like this. What were you expecting that you didn't get? Anyway, if you're a fan of Star Wars I definitely recommend you give this a try.
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
Better Than Expected
Interview with the Vampire was actually even better than I was expecting. It's based on Anne Rice's popular novel about a family of vampires through the years. This is made with mostly unknown actors who all do a great job in their roles. There was also a popular movie about this made in 1994 with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst. Obviously most people will compare the two and even though I liked the movie a little more this more than holds up and stands in its own. I never read the books but I've read that this show is a lot closer to it than the movie was. You can tell they try to respect the source material as much as possible and even had Anne Rice help create the show and have her on as an executive producer before her death last year. After reading through the reviews I'm glad that most people seem to agree with me that this is a good show.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Could've been better but still worth watching
Obi-Wan Kenobi may not the best thing from Star Wars that I've seen but it's still worth watching. Ewan McGregor is a great actor and one of the best parts of the prequel trilogy. I was really looking forward to this when I first read about it and the even more so after I saw the trailers. It did not disappoint! I don't consider myself a huge Star Wars fan but I normal fan who does enjoy most of them. I really liked The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett was worth watching. I don't understand most of these negative reviews, it's like most of the people writing them didn't want to enjoy them. If you saw him in the prequels and saw the trailers what were you expecting that you didn't get? Anyway, if you're a fan of Star Wars I definitely recommend you give this a try.
Outer Range (2022)
Pretty Good
I finally got around to watching Outer Range this past week and have to say it's even better than I expected. I've been putting off watching it and then just forgot about it until I read season 2 was coming out so I finally started it. Like a lot others have pointed out already...it's a slow paced show but not in a bad way. It's definitely not for everyone. The writing and acting is so good that it holds your attention throughout the entire series and you look forward to the next episode as soon as you finish one. The story is about the Abbot family...Royal (Josh Brolin), his wife Cecilia (Lili Taylor) and their two sons Perry (Tom Pelfrey) and Rhett (Lewis Pullman). They're fighting to keep their land from multiple different people, the biggest being their neighbors the Tilersons (Will Patton, Shawn Sipos, Noah Reid, Matt Lauria & Deirdre O'Connell). One day Royal comes across a mysterious black hole on his property and from there the questions & twists start to pile up. The hole is actually a portal to travel in time. This show is smart, interesting and original. I'm already looking forward to season 3, I just hope we don't have to wait 2 years like we did for this season.
Succession (2018)
Couldn't stop watching
Going into this I thought there was no way Succession could ever live up to all the hype surrounding it but then I watched it. It absolutely does. It really is one of the best shows of all-time! I heard such great things about it and saw all the awards it's won but still put it off until recently. I can't believe how much I was missing out on, I binged the entire series within a week. I have to admit that you have to give it a few episodes before you really get into it because it starts off pretty slow but before you know it you'll be addicted. I can't say enough about this cast either, the entire cast is unbelievable, not a bad actor on the entire show. It absolutely deserves all the awards it's won and more.
Halo (2022)
Looking forward to seeing more
I actually enjoyed Halo a lot more than I thought I would. It's based off a video game about an enhanced super soldier they call Master Chief and his team as they defend humanity from Aliens and it takes place in the 26th Century. The special effects stand out as you can tell they put a lot of money into the show. It may start a little slow for some while it builds it world and it's characters but I found it extremely entertaining. It may get a little complicated for some of you who don't pay close attention though. I enjoyed this show so much that I binged the entire first two seasons over a weekend so I'm really looking forward to them making a few more seasons.
Gen V (2023)
Nice addition to the Boys Universe
Gen V is every bit as good as I hoped it would be. This is a spin-off of the incredible series The Boys and much like that series this is a show for adults. Gen V tells the story of a premier college for superheroes called Godolkin University. The students there are looking to join the elite superhero teams across America. We get to see these young supes as they learn to become both superheroes and adults. Obviously, not everyone there is a good guy, there are also villains and this show turns very bloody very quickly. There are also plenty of cameos from the The Boys that pop up in this too. I'm so glad that they are expanding this universe and hope they do even more spin-offs. If you like The Boys I promise you you'll like this too.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024)
Good to see Rick and Michonne again
After years of waiting, it's finally here. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who live brings back the story of Rick and Michonne. We've been waiting for 4 years for this and it does not disappoint. This has the look and feel of a blockbuster movie. Rick and Michonne are two fan favorites and two of the main from the original. They ended up falling in love and starting a family and this show continues their love story. Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Danai Gurira (Michonne) are as good as ever. Everyone who's waited for Rick to return won't be disappointed. This has the solid writing of the good years of the original and the great acting that made us love these characters in the first place. I can't say enough about the three new spinoffs so far. All 3 have been better than anything TWD has put out in year.
Family Guy (1999)
Laugh Out Loud Funny
Family Guy is one of the best comedies of all-time. It's about the Griffin family (Peter, Lois, Stewie, Meg and Chris) and their talking dog Brian. I don't even know how to explain how much I absolutely love this show. It has been a laugh out loud funny show for over 20 years now. It's a crude and rude show that says all the things we wish we could say. That's what makes it so funny. It's easily one of my favorite comedies of all-time! Seth McFarlane is just an absolute genius who has done the impossible and that's make a show remain hilarious for over 2 decades now. There's not much I can say about this incredible show that hasn't already been said so just do yourself a favor and go watch it...you won't regret it.
Silo (2023)
Excellent
I just read Silo got renewed for another season so I'm looking forward to seeing where this show goes. This show really is every bit as good as everyone says it it. It currently has a 87% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audience and a 8.2 here. It has those great scores for a reason. This is definitely one of the best new shows of the year. It takes place in a dystopian future where everyone lives in a huge silo hundreds of stories underground. They live there with a bunch of rules that they all believe are in place to protect them. It has a star studded cast led by Rebecca Ferguson and supported by Tim Robbins, Shane McRae, Will Patton, Common, Iain Glen, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, and more. With that cast, the great writing and great visuals this is a cant miss thriller.
Hanna (2019)
Worth Watching
I thought Hanna was a show that's definitely worth watching, it's actually pretty good. From what I've read it seems that most of the low reviews are from people who are comparing it to the movie and they don't like that it's a little bit different from it. Who cares? Just enjoy it for what it is and that's an entertaining tv show that's separate from the movie. Season 1 is probably the best of the seasons but they're all pretty good. It may start off a little slow for some but stick with it because it turns into an action packed thriller that will keep you entertained throughout the entire series.
Fallout (2024)
Never played the games so I can't compare
I never played the Fallout games or knew anything about them so I had no idea what to expect but I have to say that I've really enjoyed it so far. This show hooked me from the first episode and held my attention to the last. I binged the entire season in two days and was still hoping for more episodes when I was done. It seems like some of the people who actually played the games didn't like it as much but as long as try not to compare it to the game and just enjoy it for what it is...and that's an entertaining fantasy/sci-fi series. The series should be judged on its own and not compared to the game. The world building and cast are the best things about the show and I can't wait for more. I promise you'll have a blast watching this and will want to binge it as fast as you can.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Was hoping it would be better
I was really hoping The Lords of the Rings: The Rings of Power would be better. While I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, I don't consider myself fan a die hard fan. I still liked it enough to look forward to this series and was naive to think it would be as good as those movies because it's not. This series takes place thousands of years before both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It's not often that a series that's based off a huge movie franchise can live up to its hype and this one doesn't. I do admit that the visuals here are incredible. It seems to me that most of the people who dislike this are really die hard fans who don't like that the changed some things up from the books. I've never been one to mind when a show or movie has to change up a few things from the original source material because I know they have to adapt it for tv/movies and that's hard to do. As long as it's entertaining I'm ok with it but I get why some people may not be. Hopefully this will get better in season 2 but I'm not counting on it.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
It's worth a watch if you're a Marvel fan
Even though I thought Ms. Marvel is the 2nd worst of all the Marvel shows, only She-Hulk was. Worse. I still think it's worth watching. It's actually gotten great reviews and currently holds a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast is mostly made up of unknown actors and actresses, led by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. This is actually her first acting job ever and she does a pretty good job. She did such a good job that her next job is in the next Marvel blockbuster, The Marvels. I thought this show was only targeted for teens but I was wrong. While it is definitely aimed more for teens and children, that doesn't mean adults won't enjoy it. It's a fun show with plenty of heart.
Ozark (2017)
Great show...disappointing ending
The best way to describe Ozark is that it's just a flat out awesome show and a must watch! I'm so glad that I did finally start watching it because it's become one of my favorite shows of all-time. Everything about this show is excellent...the acting, writing, directing, production, cinematography, etc. Are all as good as it gets. The acting is so good that you really come to care for these characters and what happens to them even though they're not exactly the best human beings possible. I can not overstate just how good this show really is. It's one of the rare shows where every season is just as good as the others. The only negative would have to be the ending. While not the worst ending ever it's also not very good. It doesn't mean the show wasn't worth watching because you'll have fun for the majority of it but a little disappointed in the ending.
Loki (2021)
Tom Hiddleston is terrific as Loki
Loki is a must watch for any Marvel fan! I'm a huge fan of Marvel and other superhero shows/movies so I may be a little biased but this is one of favorites series from the MCU. It's an action packed thriller from start to finish. This show will grab you and pull you into its world from the very first episode. The always brilliant Tom Hiddleston was absolutely terrific as Loki. You'll have so much fun watching this show that before you know it you'll have binged both seasons. Every episode is incredibly written. It had such high expectations and it not only met those expectations but surpassed them. There's really nothing else I can say about this show that hasn't already been said. I hope they renew this for a third season because this show deserves it.
