Fall (2022)
Dull. Plot driven by convenient stupidity
One of those movies where you say, "why the hell would you do that" as an experienced climber. If I was on a trip to mars and had to watch this movie - it would make my trip worse.
The stupidity is an obvious attempt to drive the plot, but we are not talking about accidents, mistakes or forced errors - we are talking about writers saying "how do I make up a reason for this."
I ended up watching this by skipping - it was that dull.
Climbing a tower without securing safeties as they go, but they have a rope tied to each other for some reason. Then one woman falls off, instead of the safety being in place the other super-strength women grabs the rope with one hand and the tower with the other. For some reason, they cant use their ropes to get down - until the very end. Somehow the mobile phone will only work on the ground - not at the top of the tower.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Episode 1 was going so well - but then...
Spoilers Ahead.
Am I to believe that someone facing immediate peril would completely operate against their own self interest.
So good brother inherits the estate.
-> Bad brother has $8mil owed to crime family and castration is imminent. Begs good brother for help - there is not enough money.
->Good brother sells important stuff, makes a deal to get it sorted.
-> Bad brother steals money from safe to bet on a crooked fight as the deal to save him is imminent - making the prearranged deal impossible.
-> Good brother then keeps trying to help bad brother and goes to great lengths, without ever putting the responsibility back on the bad brother..
I hope this contrived plot creation doesn't continue. But I am totally off episode 1 because of it.
The Peripheral (2022)
Good until the side-quests begin
The show was interesting enough and started reasonably strong, although very cliched. There was no doubt how the plot was going and the twist was pretty obvious from the start.
The acting satisfactory however from episode 6 the side quests begin. Nothing much happens as they do these mini-quests. Didn't end up watching ep 7 and 8 and judging by the real reviews I'm glad.
I might come back to this, but wont be in a hurry, which is a shame. This could've have been a movie given the cast and visuals then they could of had true plot progression rather than filler just to make up episodes. Recommend watch but give up when it becomes boring.
The Dark Emu Story (2023)
What did I just watch??? It changed my life
This documentary was amazing. I think the way to approach it is to suspend anything you feel like you know and be open minded about where it takes you. I had mixed feelings before this, and found myself profoundly sad and yet learned about the whole situation.
Seems to me like many people arguing against Dark Emu's findings are splitting hairs about the definitions of things. It seems to be true that Indigenous people were not just hunter gatherers (even according to those that disagree) but instead in a trick of language the "experts" argue that they are "super" hunter gatherers - seems like these "experts" are not happy to equate Indigenous ingenuity with western practices.
This story made me thing deeply about this and it was one of the best docos I've seen in a long time.
