Island Prey (2001)
Women cheaters beware
Don Murray plays an older husband wronged by his neglected wife in this rather thin thriller. It's "Fatal Attraction" reversed, with none of the heart-clenching moments and little sympathy for the adulterer. Olivia Hussey fails to sustain any believable level of emotion as she frets over the ramifications and complications of her wrongdoings, and it doesn't help that many of her lines are so vanilla-plain, e.g., "It's not a problem." Otherwise, the movie has a certain watchability due to the presence of Murray and Edward Asner (as the couple's bemused lawyer). Most of all, I wonder where a movie like this comes from, as I certainly don't remember it showing at any theaters.
Cotter (1973)
Oddball movie
Don Murray plays a down-and-out drunken "redskin" rodeo clown accused of murder (wow) in this early 1970s noble-loner flick. The movie is worth checking out if you're interested in either Don Murray or Rip Torn. Both of them give performances that sometimes go over the top, but there are fine, more subtle moments as well. Don Murray's drunken Indian dance is quite strange. The film seems dated in many ways (akin to the Billy Jack movies), but it's not bad.
Note: The film's credits list Christopher Knight of the Brady Bunch, and I had read somewhere else that he did this movie, but I didn't see him in it anywhere.
Carrie (2002)
Unnecessary and tedious
As others have pointed out, there's no need for this movie to exist. The dialogue is almost exactly the same, except for a few added and deleted scenes.
Bettis does a nice job as Carrie; that was the only thing that surprised me about this movie. Let's hope she moves on to better things and leaves the TV movies behind.
About Schmidt (2002)
Don't waste your time.
This is very boring movie about a boring man. We're supposed to feel empathetic toward this man, but we really don't because he does absolutely nothing to change his circumstances. If you really want to see a two-hour movie about a retired insurance salesman with a bad combover who gets in a hottub with Kathy Bates, then by all means this is your movie.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
great ending
While there were some parts of this movie that were too campy for my tastes, the ending is brilliant. It's not just a surprise shocker, but actually based on the original ending from the novel, which had been changed for the first film. The first film stands on its own, of course, but it was an inspired idea to go back to the novel in order to give this new film its own edge.
