An error has ocurred. Please try againBecause the current chinese government is a pure dictatorship, it won't allow anyone to make any films exposing the dark side of the government. Therefore, the movies listed here will never be made in mainland China.
I hope that the chinese communist government will be overthrown by the people very soon! So directors will have the freedom to make good films just like these films.
Reviews
Front Cover (2015)
I enjoyed watching this film.
I truly enjoyed this film. Jake Choi looked better in the film, I didn't know that he has lots of tattoos in real life. He looked like a clean preppy guy in the film.
I was surprised to find out that those Chinese actors actually speak good English, but they were asked to speak English with a Chinese accent, especially the mother. I wonder if it is necessary to ask actors to speak with accents especially if it is for the US audiences.
I think that the sad emotional part of this film was when those two spent the last day together. There was no future for them even though they like each other.
Is this the first asian gay film in the US? The other one is the "Wedding Banquet" which was released in 1993. It is about a Chinese from Taiwan. When will there be a gay film about Asian/Chinese Americans?
Vidhan (2020)
emotional gay indian film, a total surprise.
I have seen quite a few indian film, but I have never seen a gay film. A total surprise. I thought that indians are conservative, lots of their films are about heterosexual marriage. I wonder if there is a market for gay films in india?
Those people in the film talk openly about gay sex, etc. There was no moral lesson. It is just like you are part of their lives. And there are also quite a few scenes of hot men in tight underwear.
I saw it for free on the tubi app.
Upstairs Downstairs (2010)
too bad, it only had two seasons.
After downton abbey ended, i thought that someone should make a new show about those people afterwards. I didn't know that there was already a show about the new era.
It is no wonder why downton abbey was a huge success. this show has too few characters comparing to it but there are still plenty of dramas. downton abbey was more grandiose.
I haven't seen the original show, yet. I am guessing that it is even better.
This show was going a little too fast in season 1. Johnny looks cute, I am glad that he is back again in season 2. He could be a footman in downton abbey for sure.
What did those servants do during the world war 2? Maybe someday there will be another show.
Hooligan Sparrow (2016)
down the the communists! a rare and brave film about mainland China.
It is so hard to do any anti-communist protest, investigation, etc. The fact that this film was made is already a miracle.
On the other hand, this film could have more details and more personal interview. Even if the communist police and others destroyed the videos, camera, she can still interview those who are involved. and this film can give details about why those people were arrested, what happened when they were arrested. It could have more information.
I gave it a 9 simply because how brave she was. If every person in mainland China tries to defend for human rights, the evil chinese government would have been destroyed long time ago.
The Fence (2010)
interesting topic, but it is a little too short.
This is a pro-illegal immigrants documentary.
Now that trump wants to build the wall. it is interesting to watch this documentary which was released more than 8 years ago. but it looked as if it was just made for trump supporters. it showed some interesting facts.
i am surprised to learn that some of those walls were already tall, deep and strong. it is also interesting to learn that some of the walls have openings between, so people can just cross at those "entrances" easily.
it brings up an interesting point about animal migrations. animals don't have citizenship, they should be able to cross the border anytime they want. then those border places are well populated already, so the animals which live there are not really exotic animals. so it should be ok if some of them can't cross the border any more.
i want to say that there are many more people from other parts of the world who want to come to usa illegally, but they can't because there are big oceans. so if we let illegals crossing the border easily, then shouldn't we give equal opportunities to asians, africans who want to come to usa illegally, too? why should we only give preference to mexicans and south americans?
Teen Beach 2 (2015)
Garrett Clayton is too funny, he should have a gay partner in the film.
the story line is not too strong, but Garrett Clayton made this film a total 8.
i just enjoy watching him acting so gay in the film, it was just crazily funny. he fits this role so perfectly. it is too funny to see him acting all silly and cute.
his lines were too funny, he performed very well. i don't know if the director made him doing that, or he thought it himself, i think that this film was funnier than teen beach movie.
and Garrett Clayton is just so good looking to look at.
but his role just seems so gay that they should have given him a boyfriend to play with in this film, that girlfriend relationship obviously doesn't work.
i would watch teen beach 3 if he is in it again.
21 (2008)
i am shocked by this racist practice, not based on a true story!
when I saw the film, I thought that it was just another average caucasian film, it has so many white characters in it which is so typical for most Hollywood films.
the last memorable mostly Asian film that i saw was : Joy Luck Club, which was so long ago.
often times, people say that Hollywood doesn't have many films that are suitable for Asian American actors, because most roles are for white people.
there are hardly any Asian children in the USA that have dreams of becoming big actors, because they never see any famous big Asian actors as their role models.
when i saw the film, i only knew that it was based on "a true story". i thought that it was some smart white students from mit who did it. I just found out that this film was actually based on some real Asian students from MIT.
it could be a good positive film to represent Asian people in the USA. i am shocked that i was fooled by this so-called "true story" which wasn't true at all.
this film could be one of the few rare films that actually have plenty of roles for Asian American actors. the producers and director chose to discriminate against Asian American actors, did the wrong thing by hiring white actors. no matter how they explain it, what they did is totally racist. and the protagonist wasn't even a US citizen, he is a foreigner.
why do Hollywood hire foreigners who have to fake US accent when there are plenty of Asian American actors who speak perfect English.
black people boycotted 2016 Oscar because it has no black nominations. some Asian American actors might have won an Oscar if they were given the chance to play a role in this film.
Interstellar (2014)
weak storyline, this film is over-rated.
i was expecting to see an exciting sci-fi film which will keep you watching till the end due to its high rating, but it was a disappointment.
it has several problems in no particular order.
1. the robot's design is too simple and ugly. it was basically a square with a computer screen in it. if people can send spaceship beyond the moon, shouldn't the robots have more functions? this ugly robot doesn't even have two hands. it can't really do anything other than talking.
2. the robot's voice sounds just like matt damon. i thought that they want to save money, so they just used the same actor. it made the film sounded cheap.
3. cooper the character didn't do anything scientific, all of sudden, he was flying a spaceship into the deep space? that didn't make sense.
4. lack of asians. in 2016, black people are protesting lack of "diversity" in Oscar, this film didn't have any Asian faces in it. there are more Asian scientists than blacks . this film failed to hire Asian actors.
Big Story in a Small City (2006)
My first Armenian film, very funny.
yea,a great film, and I am the first one who is writing a review.
I got it from a local library. the DVD cover didn't look hot and sexy, but it is a film from Armenia, and it is a comedy. that is quite unique, I am glad that I checked out this DVD. I am rating it a 9, I think that the current rating 6.6 is too low.
I enjoy watching foreign films, because I can see their regular life, their environment, culture, etc. omg, I have never seen any Armenian film before. i don't even know that they make films before this. now i wonder how many countries in this world actually make films for their own people?
I have met Armenian immigrants, they look just like the other white people. the real Armenian people obviously look different than the white people in the USA, the way they dress, the way they act, etc.
this film is very funny. It is about dead people, but it is not a sad or scary film at all. those actors exaggerated their act so you can feel funny, i wonder if they are professional actors or just amateurs.
they fast forward their street scenes, I wish that they could have showed the Armenian city life in regular speed, so foreigners like me can see that city moment that they captured.
this is a well-made comedy. I wonder if someone from Hollywood can make an US version of it in the future.
The Maze Runner (2014)
finally, an Asian male actor was in a leading role!
Asians have been living in the USA since 1800's, but there is very few Asian males in any leading roles in any of the Hollywood films. most of the time, they were hired for comical effects, or as gongfu fighters, etc.
for that reason alone, i gave this film a 10. when the film first started, I thought that it was just another film about black and white people, I thought that the black actor will be the leader throughout the film. I was surprised that Lee Kihong (koreans are like Chinese, they put last name first.) was acting in most part of the film.
although i have to say that the storyline may appear illogical in some areas, it is just very entertaining. I truly enjoyed it. It is rare that this film gave me an out of this world experience. i can't wait to see part two.
Maybe someday someone will make a TV series for this film, who knows. It is kind of similar to the TV show - lost.
Getting Go, the Go Doc Project (2013)
bad DVD cover, very emotional top gay film.
The DVD cover looked really uninteresting and ugly. i thought that it was just another gay film with some hot almost naked guys talking and doing something funny. I was planning to watch it in two nights, but once I started, I can't stop.
It feels as if those two boys were really in love. I wasn't sure if Tanner Cohen was really gay, but he looked like that he was really enjoying gay sex. hehe. both of them seemed to be good actors, they should do more films. they are totally talented.
Then the ending is a little bit sad. I guess that most of viewers probably want to scream at Tanner for making such a bad decision. And at the end, probably everyone wishes that they can really following this gay boy's online account. Too bad, it is only a film. This story is not real.
The sex scenes were a little too graphic for regular non-gay audiences. And the kissing at different places seem to be a little too much as if to fill the time for this film. If the director changed those two parts, I am sure that it could be an even better film just like the brokeback mountain.
+1 (2013)
scary, but simple. lack of diversity.
i didn't read the DVD cover before i watched the film. it is a scary film to be watched at night time, that is for sure.
i can't guess what it is all about, it gave me lots of goose bumps while watching it. when the film ended, i realized how simple the story line is. but it kept me in my seat until the end, it piqued my interest.
i enjoy watching it.
on the other hand, this film once again like other Hollywood films, it has no Asian characters. the only one in it was a naked "Japanese" woman, who can't even speak Japanese. actually, she didn't speak any common Asian language at all, i think that she just said whatever to make it sounded like Japanese.
it is supposed to happen in a college, but it has no Asian students in it. now these days, when you go to any colleges in the USA, you are bound to see a few asians. this film only has plenty of white people. when was the last time, you see two hot Asian couples having sex in a Hollywood film, etc?
Shanghai Calling (2012)
refreshing story, but not so exciting to watch, a few cliché lame jokes.
I think that there is only one similar film "outsourced" which was made a few years ago. So this story is very unique. It also has some semi- famous actors in it, but the story is not exciting. It is almost predictable.
And there are a few obvious problems in it. When it was shot in the streets of shanghai, it was so apparent that lots of people were watching while it was filmed. It instantly makes the audiences realizing that they are watching a fake film.
Second, the restaurant scene was so awkward, not funny at all. Because when he stood up, you can see that the rest of the tables were almost empty. Some of the jokes are just plain simple cliché and not funny.
There are plenty of expatriates living in Shanghai or other cities in China, I think that maybe one of them can write a real story. And the male protagonist doesn't even have any Chinese blood in him.
Born Rich (2003)
good intention, a little superficial, but well done!
I got this VHS tape (HBO demo-tape for Emmy consideration, air date: October 27th, 2003) from a yard sale, i don't remember watching it. As I was watching it, I sort of remembered that I have seen it before, I just didn't remember much about it.
While I was almost finished watching it, my 19-years-old VCR (made in November of 1995) stopped working! tragically, it doesn't make sense for me to buy a new one just to watch a few remaining VHS tapes that i still have. how ironic is that if this happened to one of those rich people in this show, i am sure that they will go buy a new vcr just to finish watching this tape. good thing, I found this on youtube, so I was able to finish watching it.
i didn't know that those kind of people exited until I watched this show. Sure, there are rich people, but i didn't know that there are children who are already super rich, who don't have to worry about money since day one.
Overall, this is a good show, but I felt that it was a little superficial. Also, Jamie Johnson didn't spend much time talking about himself. They could have talked a little bit more, and tell us more about their lives, such as if they have personal assistants, do they ever have to spend time cleaning their own rooms, buying groceries, just what they do as rich people everyday.
I enjoyed it.
Mai wei (2011)
sort of epic film with predictable results.
from the beginning of the film, it is already predictable that the main protagonists will not die. so no matter what he goes through, you already knew the end result.
then is it really possible for a female to use a gun to shoot down a warplane? i am not an expert, but it seems too unreal. then it seems that the only solution for her exit is to die. otherwise, her existence will interfere with the progress of the film.
It seems like an epic film with quite a few predictable story lines. these kind of things simply don't happen in real life. It didn't make me feel emotional.
Man of Steel (2013)
henry cavil is the wrong guy for the superman.
before i watched the film, i saw the superman pictures, i didn't think that he was the right for the film. I am not talking about his acting skills, only his look. now i have finally saw this film, i still don't think that he is the right superman.
The teenage clark kent has the typical cute handsome superman look, but henry cavil doesn't fit with the typical superman image (clean cut, cute, youthful) at all, he looks like he is from the dark side. he could play the counter part of the superman, but not superman himself. his hair looks greasy, his looks like over 30 instead of mid-20's superman.
most of the time, he looks like he is about to do something evil, instead of doing something good for the earth.
wrong guy for this film, although this film itself is good entertainment. it has some new concepts for this age old icon film. and it has so many big special effects that go by so fast that you want to rewind and watch them again.
Overall, I enjoyed watching it, but I hope that the next superman will be a new guy.
Ethan Mao (2004)
This was better than I expected.
i thought that this is just one of those low budget gay films with some nudity and weak stories. It was better than I expected.
It is clear that it had a low budget, that is why it didn't have much music in it,(if it had any, I certainly didn't get any impression), and the film visual quality is low. They did not use colored filter in front the lens, either. so it feels more like a TV show, instead of a film that you watch on big screen.
Sometimes, i felt that those people were acting, but not living in real life. It could be due to lack of music, or they were limited inside a house for a long time.
however, the story is not bad. Most gay films in the USA are about white males, this is a very rare film centered around an Asian gay male. When was the last time, so many Asian males all appeared in one film? for that reason alone, i totally support these kind of films.
Gali Gali Chor Hai (2012)
this is ridiculous, that is why it is so funny.
the first part was really funny, i sometimes rewind the DVD just to watch the funny scenes again. the ending is a little weak. they could have shown how that little fan got the protagonist in court, etc. the terrorist plot wasn't entirely related to corruption.
the older police should have won the best supporting actor award, he was also ridiculously funny.
i used to think that India films were mostly about marriages, but i have seen quite a few films that are actually about corruption, and other social problems, etc.
I enjoyed watching it very much.
And this is also added to my list of "Top Indian films about bureaucracy for all Chinese directors".
Melancholia (2011)
painfully slow and boring, high rating due to actress nudity.
yes, this is another super boring and slow film like "black swan", it got a high rating because of the famous actress got all naked, so lots of horny guys have to watch this film just see her breast. That is about it.
i checked its rating status, male under 18 gave its highest rating 7.7, as the voters get older, the rating decreases accordingly.
i thought that it might be a good film to watch due to its sci-fi content, but the sci-fi content is almost minimum. most of the time, it is just uninteresting talking about uninteresting things. it got so boring that i had to read something while it is playing on TV. otherwise, i would felt that my life is wasted for over two hours.
and i checked its budget and gross, it only made less than half of its budget 7 million dollars. i am not surprised at all.
Jin ling shi san chai (2011)
a little bit slow, but very touching.
this is a film that makes me sad, i want to stop watching, because it is so depressing, but i can't stop watching, because it is a well-made film.
Christian bale played in "empire of sun" when he was younger in shanghai, now he was back playing in Nanjing. he probably felt like coming back home once again. he is a solid actor.
it is a pity that such a good film didn't win an Oscar.
on the other hand, this film is limited mostly in one single location. it could have spent a little time describing what happened in the capital of China during that period of time.
This is also one of the first film which Nanjing dialect was used throughout, it is very rare. long live the Republic of China!
Spin the Bottle (1998)
a little too much sex, good acting.
it is a little hard to believe that they can have sex with each other without being found out by others since they share a small place.
i can't believe that it was released in 2000, it felt as if it just happened. overall, it is a good entertaining film, i thought that it was those kind of film which i can play on the internet and watch it at the same time. but i was wrong, i had to rewatch the whole thing again because they do lots of acting through talking. lots of things happened in a short time.
i don't like that guy with piercing on his face, it should be a real handsome guy with nice body, then it will be more believable.
those people indeed have chemistry, it feels like they really know each other for a long time.
London Paris New York (2012)
those two have chemistry.
good casting. those two main protagonists really have chemistry. and ali zafar has a pair of eyes that can speak. he looks so natural, it feels as if he wasn't acting at all. he is also so talented, he is also the music director, singer, of course, dancer in this film.
so it seems that he is not an Indian, but a parkistan, and they can actually do a film together. politics and films. mmm.
although the story is a little predictable, i enjoyed this film very much. it is not too long like some other typical Indian films. i don't know why this film has a low rating, the story is believable. and it is nice to look at those two beautiful people on screen. it is also nice to see foreign sceneries.
Ghost Encounters: The Queen Mary (2007)
there is no evidence at all.
it is mainly just an old guy talking, and saying things that he "heard" which we viewers can't hear.
there was no ghost images or actual scenes. there were scenes of distant knocking sound which we can't really verify if it was someone doing it just for this TV show.
then there were scenes of him talking as if a ghost was inside of him.
towards the end, it was more scenes of him and others talking, there was no solid evidence.
so this TV show can't prove anything. if they put some cameras inside the ship, and record it daily, maybe they will record something.
The Science of Sex Appeal (2009)
it is scientifically based, very informative.
for people who don't have biological background, they may find this show to be boring, because it doesn't have lots of sexual images.
it has given quite a few science research results, which were unknown to me.
however, this show only talked about sexual attractions between opposite sex. it didn't mention anything about homosexual attraction which could make this show more complete.
overall, i enjoyed watching it.
and for fans of parker young, you will see him in a few scenes wearing only a pair of tight black trunk.
Space Warriors (2013)
it is childish fun, inspirational for children.
This film is obviously not for adults who can think. but i am sure that it is good entertainment for children or teens.
the storyline is weak, and there is no way in real life that children will actually take over shuttle's operation. but it is inspiration for children who watch this film, they might be motivated to become an astronaut in the future.
sometimes, due to its childish plot, it is very apparent that those people were acting.
actor thomas kasp is a good discovery, he is way better looking than zac efron, but he may not become famous due to this low rating film.
Overall, I enjoyed watching it. You will, too; as long as you don't take it too seriously.
