Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)
A significant film
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT) along with Maine Pyar Kiya revolutionized Hindi Cinema. The film was the first of its kind. It was a big hit and in effect sparked the inspiration of love stories in the 90's like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Beta (1992)
Madhuri at her best
Clearly one of Madhuri's better performances. The film could have been treated better by the director though. Watch the film if you are a fan of Madhuri.
Dil Se.. (1998)
Everything but the screenplay is great
The film flopped (in India...has grossed over 15 crores abroad though) and was bashed by critics for one reason...a horrible screenplay and the lack of a flowing story...but the film is still great. First off the soundtrack is the best in Hindi film's of the 90's. Acting is superb by some guy called Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha and Preity Zinta (Preity who?). Santosh Sivan does excellent camerawork as the film has the best cinematography in Hindi cinema history. Even if you don't want to watch the whole film because of the bad things about the film, watch the first 15 minutes of it...the train station scene between Manisha and SRK is marvelous and the Chaiya Chaiya number on the train is breathtaking.
Parinda (1989)
An underworld saga
Of the hundreds of films made on the Indian underworld this film, along with Ram Gopal Varma's Satya, is one of the most gripping and powerful. Nana Patekar (who won a national award for this film) and Jackie Shroff are brilliant. Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor excel in their small roles. The editing is also great...something that puts it in a league of its own. The film has none of the commen Hindi masala film aspects...I can only remember 2 songs!!!
Ghayal (1990)
Who said Action films died in the 90's?
Ghayal is one of the few good action films of the 90's but it is beyond good. Ghayal is one of the best action films ever. Raj Kumar Santoshi has made a hard hitting film. What is especially notable is Sunny Deol's Filmfare and National Award winning performance.
Agneepath (1990)
Amitabh at his best
Amitabh's performance in Agneepath is as good as his performances in Main Azaad Hoon and in Deewar. Mithun Chakravarthy is brilliant in his small yet significant role. Mukul Anand does a horrible job of directing the film and the screenplay is bad but Amitabh and Mithun's performances more then make up for it. If you like Amitabh watch the film.
Sholay (1975)
One of the greatest ever
Sholay is a remarkable film...can you believe that Amitabh shot for both Sholay and Deewar at the same time? He shot for Sholay in the day near Bangalore and took a train to Bombay at night to shoot for Deewar. The film features great performances all-around and is technically sound, the film has great editing. A classic action film that includes Romance and Comedy...As far as entertainment is concerned this is the best of Hindi Cinema
