Despite her parents' misgivings, the young and brilliant Sophie goes headlong into an intoxicating relationship with M, a charming foreign student.

After a trip to meet his family, Sophie learns M's visa is invalid because of a lawsuit he faces in Montreal, and his true nature is slowly revealed.

A desperate situation pushes Sophie to lie, steal and leave everything behind, finding herself entirely under M's influence, isolated from her family.

Sophie is exposed to M's physical anger for the first time. She hopes everything will return to normal in Montreal, but she's soon disillusioned.

Sophie manages to leave M, but he uses emotional blackmail to get her back. The honeymoon is short-lived: M starts to humiliate her again.

Sophie agrees to try to make it work one more time. But to finally free herself from this monster she realises she will have to tell her story.
