The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Jeremy Irons (“Game of Lions”) made history as the latter category’s first champion, having been awarded once before for “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century: War Without End” in 1997.
The 2022 Best Narrator ballot list below consists of 33 performances. Seeking a fourth victory is David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”), whose three-year streak was broken last year by Sterling K. Channel 4 drama “Help,” starring Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham, has been picked up by Acorn TV for the U.S., Variety can reveal.
The critically acclaimed single drama, written by “His Dark Materials” and “Enola Holmes” writer Jack Thorne, will premiere on the service in the U.S. and Canada in early 2022.
“Help” is a searing commentary on the U.K. government’s response to care homes during the worst of the country’s Covid-19 crisis in 2020. Comer plays a new nurse at a care facility, where Graham’s character Tony is a patient with early onset Alzheimer’s.
When the pandemic hits, the home is bereft of personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff, and overloaded with ill patients from hospitals without any available beds. What unravels is an oftentimes infuriating examination of the under-funded care sector and the people who fall between the cracks.

Made by “Marcella” producer Buccaneer Media as an original for AMC’s BritBox rival Acorn TV, “Whitstable Pearl” has all the ingredients of a travel-friendly crime series with a female lead in a picturesque English town.
And while the six part, 45-minute series slots in neatly with the streamer’s other small town crime canon, including Cotswold’s based “Agatha Raisin” and “Queens of Mystery,” Buccaneer execs Tony Wood and Anna Burns were keen to give the seaside town of Whitstable a Scandinavian edge.
Enter Norwegian filmmaker Øystein Karlsen, whose writing/directing credits include hit dark comedy dramas “Dag,” “Exit” and “Lilyhammer,” who was duly drafted in to adapt Julie Wassmer’s series of seaside mystery novels.
Karlsen’s vision for the show, based on Wassmer’s stories, he says, was “a whodunit served on a bed of warm interpersonal drama sprinkled with black humor.”

It might be hard to believe, but Angela Bassett has never won an Emmy before. She’s now her fifth nomination after making the Best Narrator lineup for her work on Nat Geo’s “The Flood.” If she prevails, not only will she get her first statuette, but she and husband Courtney B. Vance will join the club of Emmy-winning married couples.
Vance has a perfect record at the Emmys, converting his first nomination into a win in 2016 in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for his performance as Johnnie Cochran on “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” He gave a brief but memorable speech in which he dedicated the award to his wife of now nearly 22 years — or “the woman that rocks my chain.” #truelove
Bassett’s previous nominations were for “The Rosa Parks Story”, “American Horror Story: Coven”, “American Horror Story: Freak Show” and “Master of None”. In “The Flood,...

It may have been a quieter MipTV this year, with attendee numbers down 5% from 2018 and key players BBC Studios, Fox Networks Group and Endemol Shine all absent from the market, but there has still been a buzz of activity over the past week. Variety looks back at some of the key television deals and announcements that were causing a stir on the Croisette.

*In one of the biggest deals of MipTV, Telefonica’s pay TV unit Movistar+ closed a multi-year distribution-production alliance with Germany’s Beta Film. Beta already distributed Movistar+ series on a title-by-title basis but the new deal transforms the arrangement into a partnership which will play through all stages of the value chain from early development. It provides Beta Film exclusive international distribution rights, excluding Spain and sometimes Latin America, to approximately six Movistar+ series a year. Zdf Enterprises will bring “Queens of Mystery” to a host of markets after striking a rights deal for the offbeat drama that streaming service Acorn TV ordered as one of it latest originals.
The deal with Acorn hands Zdfe the rights to the show in non-English-language territories. It is the second time Zdfe and Acorn have pacted on distribution after they worked together on “London Kills,” another original for the British-content-skewed streamer and which has been picked up by the BBC in the U.K.
Specifically, Zdfe has teamed with Acorn Media Enterprises, the AMC-owned firm’s content division. Its sales unit, Acorn Media International, will sell “Queens of Mystery” in English-language markets.
Olivia Vinall (“Apple Tree Yard”) plays Matilda. Her aunts are played by Julie Graham (“The Bletchley Circle”), Sarah Woodward (“New Blood”), and Siobhan Redmond (“Between the Lines”).

Free@Last TV’s Barry Ryan and David Walton will continue to produce the series with Catherine Mackin from Acorn Media Enterprises, the company’s UK-based development division, and Michele Buck from Company Pictures as executive producers.
