Netflix’s all-out assault on the Spanish-language content market is paying off.
The latest Netflix ‘What We Watched’ data dump — or ‘engagement report’ in the streamer’s lexicon — shows seven Spanish-language TV shows, including Money Heist spin-off Berlin, were in the 100 most-watched for the January to June period this year. A further three films made the top 100 in that chart, including Society of the Snow (aka La Sociedad de la Niece) at number three with 103.8 million views.
Netflix has made Spanish-language content, and specifically originals produced out of its huge studios just outside of Spain’s capital Madrid, a major priority in the battle for international streaming subscribers. The strategy appears to be paying off when comparing this latest data set with previous incarnations.
Berlin, which stars Pedro Alonso in the titlular role as a master thief, was the ninth-most-watched TV show with 48.5 million views. The show, a prequel to...

Stars: Julian Sands, Jack Parr, Arlo Carter, Erin Mullen, Kim Spearman, Alexander Arnold | Written by Andrew Prendergast, Nick Saltrese | Directed by Joachim Hedén
Notably, The Last Breath features the last performance by the late Julian Sands to reach the screen. Sadly, it’s a supporting role that doesn’t give him, or more likely his stunt double, a lot of screen time or much to do until the end of the film…
1944, somewhere off the US Virgin Islands, a German U Boat sinks the USS Charlotte. There are survivors, but where there are survivors, there are sharks. In the present, Levi (Julian Sands) has been searching for the wreck for decades, and, along with Noah he’s finally found it.
A group of Noah’s friends, Logan, Riley (Erin Mullen; Midsomer Murders), Sam who happens to be Noah’s ex, and her instantly hateable brother Brett arrive for a vacation.

While it may have been hell to film Monty Python and the Holy Grail on location in Scotland (John Cleese has frequently complained that it was a “miserable experience” due to the lack of hot water), that commitment to dank medieval realism is arguably what made the comedy work so well.
Because it wasn’t shot on sets that likely would have just ended up in a dumpster, a lot of Python fans are able to make pilgrimages to the real-life locations used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, including Scotland’s historic Doune Castle, which the group sneakily used over and over and over again.
But the specific geographic location where one memorable scene was filmed was never properly documented — which became a problem when two Pythons later tried to track it down.

Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan & Laapataa Ladies Still(Photo Credit –Facebook)
On May 4, Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan, and Jyothika’s Shaitaan movie was released on Netflix. The movie was released in theatres on March 8 and received mixed reviews. However, the audience enjoyed the psychological horror thriller, and it became the first big hit of 2024. When it was released on the streaming platform, the response was equally impressive. Hence, Ajay’s film is in the second spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Films (Non-English) list.
Shaitaan is a remake of the Gujarati movie Vash. From May 6 to May 12, the Ajay Devgn-starrer received 6.6 million views. The movie that’s on the number one spot is The Courier. It’s a Spanish film that stars Aron Piper, Maria Pedraza, and Luis Tosar.

Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.
Were people just curious to see how bad it really is or did fans who watched Madame Web in theaters simply want to relive those many meme-worthy moments? We don't know. Either way, it's led to the movie being a hit on Netflix!
"It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee," Dakota Johnson...

One of the great things about Netflix is that even as it contributes to the slow mediocritization of filmmaking, it continues to broaden our collective cultural horizons. Yes, for every Kevin Hart's "Lift," which inexplicably had Netflix viewers enraptured earlier this year, there's a foreign film or series that we'd otherwise never have a chance to see. Last year, Indian thriller "Jaane Jaan" topped the Netflix charts in the U.S. while Mexican series "Thursday's Widows" saw similar streaming success stateside.
Now, it's Spain's turn. The country has had a mixed record when it comes to its streaming exports. Last year, god awful Spanish slasher "Killer Book Club" somehow had the Netflix charts in a stranglehold, but the country somewhat redeemed itself with the Oscar-nominated "Society of the Snow," which hit Netflix in January 2024. Now, España has delivered yet another Netflix hit with "El Correo" or "The Courier."

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Back in 2018, the world saw Netflix’s Élite series, focusing on three working-class students who enroll at the elite high school in Spain. Its glowing success made the worldwide celebrities of its young actors, who continued to conquer the charts.
In particular, two of the show’s main stars shined in this crime flick, which is now holding the 2nd place in Netflix’s global top after it was added to the platform on May 10. It managed to gain the attention of not only Spanish viewers, but also Netflixers all around the world.
Set in 2002, after Spain entered the Euro, the movie tells a story of the young valet Iván, who finds his town and the opportunities it gives too small for his ambitions. He then becomes a courier for an international organization dedicated to money laundering.
This job becomes life-changing for Iván, who starts to strive for more money and power,...

It’s season finale time for networks, but Netflix, naturally, still has plenty of brand new TV and shows coming in May.
Jeff Daniels makes his TV return in the David E. Kelley series “A Man in Full.” That six-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Tom Wolfe. Per a press release: “When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.” The series will also star Tom Pelphrey, Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, William Jackson Harper, Aml Ameen, Sarah Jones, Jon Michael Hill and Chanté Adams.
Additionally, comedy fans can get excited for a new special series from John Mulaney. The comedian is hosting a multi-night event, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” that looks to be part interview show and part man-on-the-street hijinks.

Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is finalizing a deal to preemptively acquire The Bet, a hot spec from Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón (Enemy), according to multiple sources.

Fallout‘s got a new trailer recently for its TV show; by the looks of it, it is already doing justice to the franchise. Players may have speculated certain things after consuming every bit of the post-apocalyptic world that was shown in the trailer. But if they turn their heads to the conversations and details emerging on the internet, they might as well know the potential ending the show’s developers could be going with.
The TV adaptation of the popular dystopia-focused franchise will follow the story of a Vault Dweller called Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) who is likely to be mentored by Walton Goggins’ Ghoul. Apart from that, it will also feature the Brotherhood of Steel, a quasi-religious technocratic military order featured in all the games.

Kaleem Aftab, director of international programming at the Red Sea Film Festival, has cast his net wide in selecting the 14 films in the festival’s International Short Film Competition program.
Aimed at attracting emerging talent from across Africa, Asia and the Islamic world, the section includes fiction, animation and documentary in films that average 15-20 minutes long, but may be as short as a couple of minutes, or as long as an hour.
With films ranging from Iranian director Farnoosh Samadi’s Iran-French co-production, “Titanic” – which takes a darkly comic look at Iranian film censors confused by how to interpret new regulations – to Kazakh filmmaker Shugyla Serzhan’s “The Late Wind,” about a young pregnant woman suddenly abandoned by her boyfriend, the section pushes boundaries of subjects that are already part of the public conversation in the countries from which it selects.

Five years ago, 42, the British management and production company that counts Nicolas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes among its clients, made its way across the pond. Modeled on U.S. outfits like Entertainment 360 and Anonymous Content, 42 jumped into the crowded territory of American producer-managers, with a Beverly Hills-based office headed by co-founder and manager Josh Varney and producer Ben Pugh.
Early adopters of Netflix, 42’s slate has included streaming features like the highly viewed vampire movie Night Teeth and the sci-fi flick Outside the Wire, starring Damson Idris and Anthony Mackie. Theatrically, there has been the Cuban Missile Crisis drama The Courier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and Focus Features’ The Silent Twins, which premiered at Cannes in 2022. On the M&a front, in 2020, 42 sold a minority stake to Lionsgate, and earlier this year, the company acquired Ob, a music video and commercials outfit.

"He has lied to you, and he has used you, when are you going to accept that?" MGM+ has debuted the full official trailer for the British spy series titled A Spy Among Friends, arriving for streaming in March. The service formerly known as Epix has re-branded as MGM+, with a big line-up set to launch this spring. "The epic true story of Kim Philby, the Cold War's most infamous spy, from the 'master storyteller' and author of Prisoners of the Castle." It's an adaptation of the book of the same name. The UK mini-series stars the very talented actors Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, real-life 1960s British spies who, despite their opposing allegiances, developed a life-long friendship. It reminds me of the other British spy film The Courier (aka Ironbark) from a few years ago - also about two spies who were friends.

Netflix is gearing up for a busy end to 2022.
September seems to be a calm before the storm-of-sorts – the storm being a deluge of films set to be awards contenders when Oscar season rolls around.
The first of the streaming service’s high-profile films, set to arrive in the tail-end of the year, will be Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas.
Elsewhere, there is a bunch of non-Netflix films set to be added over the course of the month, as well as the return of everyone’s favourite Karate Kid spin-off TV series.
This list has been compiled by The Independent, with additional assistance from the team at What’s on Netflix – and you can find the full compilation of everything being removed this month here.

Exclusive: Lionsgate is finalizing a deal to acquire a minority stake in London- and Los Angeles-based management and production company 42, we can reveal.
Management-production powerhouse 3 Arts Entertainment, of which Lionsgate is a majority owner, has been a key driver in concocting the deal and will look to collaborate on TV and film projects with the fast-growing 42 and Lionsgate in a three-way venture. We understand the pact will also include a first-look deal between Lionsgate Television and 42 for the U.S.
Lionsgate and 42 were unavailable for comment but we know the pact is almost done. We hear it is lucrative and well into eight figures. In 2018, Lionsgate bought a majority stake in 3 Arts which valued it at $300 million-plus, so given the sky-high valuations of media companies right now in Hollywood, it’s likely to be a fair chunk of change.
Among 42’s hundreds of clients are Jesse Armstrong, Julian Fellowes,...

If Ted Lasso were a film executive, he’d probably resemble someone like Marc Goldberg, the CEO of U.K. producer-distributor Signature Entertainment.
Goldberg’s favorite football team since he was a kid has been West Ham United, and — in a cosmic alignment befitting the popular Apple TV Plus series — the club’s owner, David Sullivan, happens to be a stakeholder in Signature.
In Goldberg’s early career as a DVD salesman, he managed to convince a corporate client that buying an executive box at West Ham would come in handy when entertaining customers. In 2010, when Sullivan bought the team, the new owner asked for feedback from corporate members on ways to improve the club, which super-fan Goldberg readily provided in an off-the-cuff email.
The pair developed an unlikely friendship — “I was the envy of all my family and friends,” says Goldberg — and eventually their business paths crossed when Goldberg...
