Ian Somerhalder is reflecting on walking away from acting.
In an interview with People published Monday, the Vampire Diaries star explained why he stepped away from the screen to pursue various passion projects. The actor’s comments come amid the CW show’s 15th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of Lost, both shows on which he starred.
“Aug. 19 makes five years since I was professionally on camera as an actor/producer,” Somerhalder said. “I stepped away from that after V Wars to build these companies, launch films like Kiss the Ground, Common Ground and Ground Swell and raise my kids. I remember sitting with my management talking about this, saying, ‘Hey, this is the only thing I’ve ever known that’s ever sustained my family, and I’m walking away from it,’ at this sort of peak, could have gone and done anything, but these partnerships mean way more to me.

With the vampire craze going strong at the time, it was no surprise that the actor rode that wave to boost his career. But even though he jumped into another project soon after, acting wasn’t really bringing him happiness. Somehow, Lost played a part in that, especially in how he joined and left the show. But how did that happen, exactly?

There are always several ways to go about a popular topic in fiction. High and low fantasy; grounded and space sci-fi; man-made and natural apocalypse; you name it. However, when it comes to vampires, the rules were set over a century ago: it’s a magical condition, a curse that turns dying humans into those bloodsucking night crawlers who crave for human victims and dark aesthetics.
There have been many attempts to turn vampires from fantasy to sci-fi, each of them properly disastrous — but we’re here to talk about the most recent and decent one.
Vampirism: Not a Curse, but a Virus
The common approach in all sci-fi vampire takes is that instead of an unholy curse, vampirism is a mysterious virus, and the TV show we’re talking about didn’t shy away from this trope. In V Wars, the deadly virus begins spreading at a rapid pace...

When it comes to the gothic and horror supernatural genre, vampires have consistently been explored in both shows and movies. Over the years, there have been multiple interpretations ranging from romantic fantasies and action to comedy and supernatural horror. Among many notable entries has been the CW teen drama starring Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev, which has earned acclaim as one of the best vampire TV shows.

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

There is no way to deny that acting in a television show takes great talent. The actor has to become someone else, adapting to a different personality altogether, and on the popular show, The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder was able to do just that in his role as Damon Salvatore.
It turns out that Somerhalder is pretty multitalented since he didn’t only act in the show but directed a few episodes as well. Now, we have learned that Kat Graham, who portrayed Bonnie Bennett on The Vampire Diaries, loved working with Somerhalder as a director.

Hollywood typically casts 20-something actors as teens, primarily due to labor laws. The Vampire Diaries was no different, with most of the cast members in their early to mid-20s when the teen drama began. By the time Tvd ended after eight seasons, its actors had aged. Ian Somerhalder was one of the oldest on the show, so how old was he while on The Vampire Diaries?

When fans of The Vampire Diaries talk about the best storylines in the series, the 1994 Prison World plot comes up more often than not. It ticks so many boxes, like putting familiar characters in an unfamiliar place, and pairing off Ian Somerhalder with Kat Graham.
The Season 6 storyline was fun to watch, and the Prison Worlds added a crucial piece of lore to The Vampire Diaries universe. According to Somerhalder and Graham, it was one of the most enjoyable storylines to film.

'90s kids remember the flashy fashion and hilarious hijinks of Will Smith on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," but the modern remake of the series, "Bel-Air," is not just a massive hit for Peacock, it's also a completely new take on the story of young Will Smith (Jabari Banks) as he adjusts from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of the Bel-Air neighborhood in Los Angeles. The series' humble beginnings are rooted in Morgan Cooper's fan-made fake trailer for a dramatic envisioning of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," but has since evolved into a legitimate hit for Peacock, with Cooper serving as co-writer, director, and executive producer.

Exclusive: Comic book and graphic novel publisher Idw has unveiled nine new original comic book projects set for release beginning in July as part of a new initiative. While the focus is on creating new comic book IP, following publishing of the comics, the Idw Entertainment Group will work to potentially develop the IP for film, television and other entertainment mediums the way the company has done in the past with such titles as Wynonna Earp and Locke & Key.
Reflecting genres including crime thriller, supernatural horror, science fiction and epic fantasy, the projects hail from New York Times bestselling authors, top industry artists and writers, as well as newcomers, including Scott Snyder, G. Willow Wilson and Stephen Graham Jones, among others. Additionally, Idw has additional projects underway for 2023 and beyond, including a comic book series by Academy Award–winning director, screenwriter, novelist, and showrunner John Ridley and several original graphic novels aimed at middle grade and YA audiences.
Beginning with Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces: Wildfire in July (see details below), Idw will be publishing the projects monthly.
“A year ago we gave ourselves a mission: to make Idw the destination for premier talent and rising stars,” says Mark Doyle, editorial director of Originals. “This is an unprecedented moment in Idw’s history, and there’s been a tremendous team effort from our creative and editorial teams and everyone at the company to develop a stellar slate of original stories—and we’re having a blast doing it!”
Here is a trailer for Idw’s new initiative:
“Throughout our history, Idw has provided a supportive environment for passionate creators to pursue their artistic vision, taking form as such beloved titles as 30 Days of Night, Locke & Key, V Wars, Canto, October Faction, and Wynonna Earp, just to name a few,” says publisher Nachie Marsham. “Our new Originals editorial division, spearheaded by Mark Doyle, reflects our commitment to building upon that legacy. More than ever before, we are reaching out to the creative community, welcoming fresh ideas that span a diverse range of genres, and offering audiences wild new worlds to explore.”
The first nine projects are:
Dark Spaces: Wildfire, a thriller series written by Scott Snyder with art by Hayden Sherman, follows a group of female inmate firefighters deep into the smoldering California hills, where their desperate heist of a burning mansion will lead them to the score of a lifetime…or a deadly trap!
Trve Kvlt, a five-issue miniseries written by Scott Bryan Wilson with art by Liana Kangas, introduces Marty Tarantella, a down-on-his-luck loser whose last-ditch scheme to escape a lifetime of fast-food service sets him on a collision course with a cult of violent, Devil-worshiping lunatics!
Crashing, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Klein with art by Morgan Beem, throws open the doors of an emergency room filled with casualties of a superhuman war, where Rose Osler, a doctor on her own path of addiction and recovery, faces the most dangerous day of her medical career.
Earthdivers, an ongoing series written by Stephen Graham Jones with art by Davide Gianfelice, unites four Indigenous survivors in an apocalyptic near future as they embark on a bloody, one-way mission to save the world by traveling back in time to kill Christopher Columbus and prevent the creation of America.
Dead Seas, a six-issue miniseries written by Cavan Scott with art by Nick Brokenshire, transforms a cynical convict into a reluctant hero when he’s trapped on a sinking prison ship swarming with ghosts. Can he unite desperate criminals, pirates, and brutal guards as they try to escape a watery grave?
Golgotha Motor Mountain, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler with art by Ryan Lee, is a high-octane, redneck motor massacre about two meth-cooking brothers and their attempt to make it home in one piece as all manner of cosmic alien horrors are hot on their trail.
Arca, an original graphic novel written by Van Jensen with art by Jesse Lonergan, leaves a dying Earth behind as billionaires establish a luxurious new society out among the stars, tended to by teenage indentured servants. But one girl discovers that the good life promised for their years of servitude was a lie…
The Sin Bin, a six-issue miniseries written by Robbie Thompson with art by Molly Murakami, hits the road with washed-up hockey player Dale “Dukes” Duquesne, who moonlights as a monster hunter during away games with his daughter, Cat, in tow, hoping to find her mother’s killer.
The Hunger and the Dusk, a twelve-issue storyline written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Chris Wildgoose, upends an age-old conflict between humans and orcs by introducing a new, deadlier species. Fragile alliances form—and unexpected romances blossom—as former enemies wade into battle together to save their two races.

The company’s ad-supported streaming services, Crackle, Popcornflix and Chicken Soup for the Soul have premiere rights.
Cementing the connection between Strong and Chicken Soup for the Soul is David Ozer, who has been appointed president of Strong Studios. Ozer formerly was CEO of Landmark Studio Group, a division of Chicken Soup. In part because of the familiar executive relationship, the companies said “many additional collaborations are expected” down the line.

A new villain has risen in Gotham and he might be the Bat Team’s nastiest threat yet. Batwoman this Sunday finally introduced the sadistic drug lord known as Black Mask—a guy you’d never want to encounter in real life.
Picking up where we left off in Coryana, this week’s episode revealed that Black Mask is the mysterious figure behind Kate Kane’s kidnapping. He has burned her face beyond recognition and alluded to some other nefarious plans for the former vigilante, who has now been declared dead (her friends and family held a funeral).

No studio or production company has been immune to the devastating financial effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, and that even includes an outfit like Netflix who always appeared to have a bottomless supply of cash. The streaming service have been nothing short of ruthless this year, wielding the axe like Jack Nicholson in The Shining to remove a huge number of original shows from the schedule.
The majority of the titles to bite the dust have been canned after just one season, which includes but is in no way limited to, I Am Not Okay With This, The Society, Away, Teenage Bounty Hunters, The Big Show Show, V Wars and October Faction. Altered Carbon and The Order, meanwhile, managed to get two runs under their respective belts, while the acclaimed Glow already had one episode of season 4 shot and in the can before the massively popular drama was also kicked to the curb.

Netflix‘s 2020 cancellation spree has claimed yet another victim, and the axe continues swinging with alarming regularity across the streaming service’s wide range of original output. One minor positive is that The Order managed to last for two seasons before getting canned, a claim that can’t be made by the likes of I Am Not Okay With This, The Society, Away, Teenage Bounty Hunters, The Big Show Show, V Wars, October Faction and many others that have been pulled from the platform this year.
Created by longtime television veteran Dennis Heaton, the teen-skewing fantasy show with horror and supernatural elements followed a college student who joins a secret society that practices magic. Of course, our handsome protagonist eventually stumbles upon a wide-ranging conspiracy full of dark secrets that threaten the very fabric of reality, while there’s also the requisite amount of romance and some werewolves thrown in for good measure.

The financial implications of the Coronavirus pandemic have had a massive effect on the film and television industry, and even with what appears to be a bottomless supply of cash, Netflix have shown that they’re far from immune. Despite enjoying their best year ever when it comes to original movies, the streaming service has canceled a much higher number of series than usual.
While the likes of The Big Show Show, V Wars, October Faction and more were most likely canned due to a general lack of interest from subscribers and low viewership numbers, in other cases, the company have binned titles that had a huge audience. Almost a million people signed a petition to have Anne with an E brought back, while I Am Not Okay with This and The Society were initially renewed before Netflix changed their minds, and Glow already had one episode of season 4 filmed...
