“Wicked” is “very very popular” — on the big screen, and now on video-on-demand. In a rare display of transparency for downstream revenues, Universal reported the big-budget musical has racked up $26 million in its first day and $70 million in its first week of digital release in the United States and Canada.
“Wicked” debuted on home entertainment on Dec. 31, for $30 to buy and $20 to rent the original or sing-along version of the film. According to the studio, the Broadway adaptation delivered the largest first day and initial week of sales for any Universal theatrical title. For comparison, the studio’s second-largest video-on-demand (VOD) launch was 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” with $44 million from its first week of digital rentals and sales.
And Universal expects the Oz-related riches to grow: “Wicked” still has more than two months of exclusivity on home entertainment platforms before the song-and-dance extravaganza will be available on Peacock,...

The Wild Robot has helped push DreamWorks' box office past a major record. DreamWorks Animation is a studio that was founded in 1994 by iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. Its first major hit was its second release, 1998's The Prince of Egypt, which grossed $218.6 million against a $60 million budget. Since then, it has had many more hits, launching multiple major animated franchises including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Trolls, and The Boss Baby. Collectively, DreamWorks movies have grossed more than $17 billion worldwide and earned three Oscar nominations.
DreamWorks' The Wild Robot, which debuted on September 27, was written and directed by Chris Sanders and stars Lupita Nyong'o, Kit Connor, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. Fans of the Trolls franchise are waiting expectantly for Trolls 4, the next installment in the magical, musical hit children's series. Jumping on the lucrative bandwagon of movies based on toy brands, Trolls premiered in 2016, starring Justin Timberlake as Branch and Anna Kendrick as Princess Poppy. It's no coincidence that those two leads are talented singers as the Trolls franchise is also a musical, sing-a-long series that features kidified versions of popular songs. The soundtracks of Trolls Band Together, Trolls World Tour, and Trolls are reason enough to see the movies.
Just about every four years, a new Trolls movie has come out with Trolls World Tour premiering on April 10, 2020, and Trolls Band Together on November 17, 2023. The series has been critically successful, with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score being 63% for Trolls Band Together. It's been an up and down journey for the movie business over the last four years -- with a great many downs along the way. 2020 and the pandemic completely upended the industry, with theaters shutting down for months on end, every studio doubling down on streaming, and "Trolls World Tour" spawning what we now know as premium VOD, allowing for new movies to play at home as they're still playing in theaters. So, where are things headed in the coming years? The good news is that it looks like the box office will recover to pre-pandemic levels. The bad news is that going to the movies is likely going to become even more expensive to make that happen.

After just three short weekends in theaters, Universal Pictures is pretty much pulling the plug on "The Fall Guy." The studio has announced that director David Leitch's action/comedy is available to stream on VOD as of today. Indeed, the summer blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt can now be watched from the comfort of home, effectively kneecapping its run at the box office. For those who didn't feel the need to rush out to a theater for this one, that might be welcome news. For just about everyone else? It's a sign of a much bigger problem Hollywood must contend with.
"The Fall Guy" made $8.35 million in its third weekend, coming at number four on the charts behind "The Strangers: Chapter 1" ($11.8 million), "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" ($25.4 million), and "If" ($33.7 million). Talented actors and musicians bring life to Trolls World Tour, showcasing diverse backgrounds and fresh new characters in an ever-growing universe. The star-studded cast includes award-winning performers like Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and Kelly Clarkson, who lend their voices to the animated musical. A mixture of pop, rock, funk, and country trolls come together as Queen Poppy leads the fight against the new tribe threatening the musical harmony of the six lands.
The Trolls World Tour cast includes a ton of talented actors, who can also sing, and even some major musicians who lend their voices to the animated musical movie. Trolls World Tour follows the success of the first Trolls movie from 2016, which itself was praised for its take on an animated musical. Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. Trolls Band Together features an all-star cast of musicians, including a boy band reunion and top pop stars. Branch embarks on a quest to reunite his former band, resembling Nsync's reunion and new song release. Justin Timberlake leads the cast, with Camila Cabello and Troye Sivan adding their musical talents to the film.
Trolls Band Together, the third installment in the animated franchise, has an all-star cast that includes several popular musicians. DreamWork's adventure comedy series has always been music-centric. Still, the third movie takes the musical element to the next level by including a much-awaited boy band reunion and some of the biggest names currently in pop. The film also includes actors like Anna Kendrick, Daveed Diggs, and Andrew Rannells who, while known primarily for acting, are talented singers on both the stage and screen. They contribute their voices to Trolls Band Together's songs, but so too do many professional musicians.

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

“Trolls Band Together,” the third chapter in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, gets psychedelic with the introduction of new worlds and characters, helped along by some trippy 2D animation from Titmouse. It’s a musical tribute to ’90s boy bands, fittingly enough, as Justin Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his long-lost brothers (known as the family band BroZone): Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), and Clay (Kid Cudi).
But Floyd is kidnapped by pop-star siblings Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells) as part of their nefarious musical scheme.
“With Justin and boy bands as part of the DNA of the Troll universe, it felt like a natural extension, and also, musically and visually, it’s more psychedelic,” director Walt Dohrn (“Trolls World Tour”) told IndieWire. “If you can see my room, I live in a kaleidoscopic, Technicolor, psychedelic world. It was bad enough for “The Marvels” to suffer a Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise low $46.1 million opening amidst fan reception that was mildly positive at best. It’s likely to get worse this weekend as a slew of pre-Thanksgiving newcomers, led by the return of “The Hunger Games,” will peel away much of the lingering interest in the new Marvel film among casual moviegoers.
Likely to take No.1 will be Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel to the YA novel series that Lionsgate turned into four films in the early 2010s that still remain the highest-grossing in studio history.
Other films arriving this weekend include Universal/DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together,” Searchlight’s “Next Goal Wins,” and Sony/TriStar’s tongue-in-cheek slasher film “Thanksgiving.”
Given its setting before the events of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, which means no Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes...

“Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is expected to emerge victorious in this weekend’s box office battle royale.
It’s competing against two fellow newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s threequel “Trolls Band Together” and Sony’s gory thriller “Thanksgiving,” in this crowded pre-Turkey Day corridor. Despite the stacked race, all three films could work as counter-programming against each other and carve out solid box office receipts. That may not be the case for last weekend’s champion, Disney’s $220 million budgeted superhero sequel “The Marvels.” After a disappointing $47 million debut, the comic book tentpole is bracing for a 50-55% drop, which puts ticket sales around $21 million to $23 million in its sophomore outing.
With a lackluster turnout expected for “The Marvels,” “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will lead in North America with at least $50 million in its first weekend of release. Tracking, however, has suggested...

“Trolls Band Together” is nearly here. And before you rejoin Branch (Justin Timberlake), Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and the rest of the gang (this time in a daring attempt to save Branch’s boy band brothers), why not go behind the scenes of DreamWorks Animation’s latest marvel in this exclusive behind-the-scenes video? You can watch it above.
In the video you can see brand-new “Trolls” universe characters, like the inhabitants of Vacation Island that take on the appearance of floppy puppets. Plus learn more about Rhonda, the psychedelic, sentient bus that transports the trolls on their go-for-broke adventure.
“The best part about working on ‘Trolls’ is the incredible artists that we get to work worth,” director Walt Dohrn says in the featurette. “And pushing this world into new and exciting places.” Earlier in the piece, Dohrn says that he really wanted “Trolls Band Together” to have its own identity and...

The feature take of the Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, who is also an EP here, about the early days of ultimate villain Coriolanus Snow and the Hunger Games, is eyeing $50M on tracking and another $50M abroad. Through four movies, the Hunger Games franchise has reaped $3 billion worldwide.
The Francis Lawrence-directed pic is one of four big studio wide releases in addition to Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls Band Together, TriStar/Spyglass Media’s Eli Roth directed Thanksgiving horror movie and Searchlight’s Taika Waititi directed soccer comedy Next Goal Wins.

October was another winner over 2022, thanks mostly to “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) and early stellar results for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Universal). That makes 10 of 11 months that improved compared to last year, with May only slightly down.
That could continue in November, but it might be close. The weight is on three franchise titles: “The Marvels” (Disney) on November 10, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) and “Trolls Band Together” (Universal), both November 17. Those three, plus “Wish” (Disney) on November 22, have the best chances of surpassing $100 million in domestic gross, with “The Marvels” and “Hunger Games” the most likely during the month.
October’s improvement over last year will be around 20 percent. That’s off from the 26 percent improvement year to date, but still better than comparable Novembers.

There are just two more months to 2023, but November is important, since it’s the start of the holiday season with studios releasing big sequels and prequels, awards movies, and others that might stick around through the New Year. Read on for Gold Derby’s November 2023 box office preview.
“The Marvels” (Marvel/Disney – Nov. 10)
Normally, a new film from Marvel Studios would be a no-brainer to win the month, but audiences seem to be losing interest in superhero movies. Oscar winner Brie Larson returns as Carol Danvers in this direct sequel to the 2019 “Captain Marvel” movie that opened with $153.4 million and made $426 million just in North America. With that kind of showing, you’d expect a lot of anticipation its sequel, especially with the return of Samuel L. Culture minister talks cuts after state funding for film soared to €800m in 2022
Italy is to cut the €800m of funding it currently earmarks for film production per year, according to Italian minister of culture Italian Gennaro Sangiuliano.
The move comes at a time when Italy is producing a high number of Italian and international films. However, Italian films are continuing to underperform at the box office compared to the pre-pandemic era.
“It’s time to intervene,” Sangiuliano said, noting that state funding for film soared from €400m in 2019 to €800m in 2022 according to data from the Investments in Cinema and Audiovisual Development Fund.

Indie films have scored some impressive figures at Spanish box office this year.
As the Spanish film industry comes together at Valladolid International Film Week (known locally as the Seminici), one of the big talking points will be how to make independent films stand out at the local box office.
Although Spain’s box office in the year to mid-October has grossed €400m, 35% higher than the same period in 2022, it is still 17% lower than the 2015-2019 pre-Covid average.

When DreamWorks’ original “Trolls” movie was released, it wasn’t immediately apparent that the studio was launching a musical franchise. The rainbow-bright computer-animated feature boasted a sparkly soundtrack and the voice of Justin Timberlake as grumpy, gray-skinned Branch, but it wasn’t until the sequel — “Trolls World Tour,” released straight to streaming during the pandemic — that the series explicitly embraced its Top-40 ’tude. Now, having survived the rock apocalypse of that film, the saga rewinds to explore Branch’s backstory … as the junior member of a boy band, BroZone, in zero-calorie sugar high “Trolls Band Together.”
If you’re wondering why this is the first you’re hearing that Branch once performed arena concerts — as the diaper-clad “Baby B” — with older brothers Floyd (Troye Sivan), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), Clay (Kid Cudi) and John Dory (Eric André), just imagine how his girlfriend, Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick), must feel about the news.

DreamWorks Animation has laid off 70 employees, or approximately 4% of its workforce, amid production slowdowns caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and rising production costs.
“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a Dwa spokesperson said in a statement. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.”
DreamWorks Animation, which was acquired by NBCUniversal in 2016, found success this past winter with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which legged out for months at the box office and grossed $484 million worldwide. But the studio’s summer release, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” was a bomb, with just $44.9 million grossed against a $70 million budget.

This year's Thanksgiving weekend will be packed with new releases, but they just might be chaotic enough to coexist. Historically, the holiday has been one of the high points of the slower fall months at the box office, particularly for family movies. The current record-holder for a Thanksgiving opening is "Frozen," which grossed $67.3 million Friday-to-Sunday and $95.3 million over the full five-day holiday weekend. With the exception of "Creed II," all the other movies in the top 10 are also family films aimed at a younger audience, including "Tangled," "Moana," and "Toy Story 2."

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken had a confusing target age range, making it difficult for parents to determine if it was suitable for their children. DreamWorks Animation's inconsistent output in recent years has made the studio unreliable, and audiences were hesitant to see their latest release. The lack of marketing for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken contributed to its poor box office performance, as many people were unaware of its existence.

The Transformers: Rise of the Beasts cast features both familiar actors from the previous entries in the franchise and exciting newcomers making their first appearance in a Transformers movie. Set in 1994, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts revolves around a pair of Brooklyn archeologists who embark on a globetrotting journey with the Autobots and, along the way, contend with three new factions of Transformers: the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons. Michael Bay isn’t in the director’s chair for this one — it’s directed by Creed II’s Steven Caple, Jr. — but Bay is on board as a producer for this next chapter in the Transformers franchise and the new cast members it brings.
Rather than checking in on existing characters like Shia Labeouf’s Sam Witwicky, Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager, or Hailee Steinfeld’s Charlie Watson, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts introduces all-new protagonists to the Transformers franchise.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

When DreamWorks purchased the “Trolls” franchise in 2013, it seemed like an odd revival. The furry creatures had been lost in the 1990’s after being the toy fad of a generation.
Since then, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures managed to turn this IP back into a multi-million dollar success story, powered by catchy songs from star-studded casts and topped with glitter, lots of it. Clips from the third film, due to be released on Nov. 17 in the U.S, were presented Thursday at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, the world’s biggest toon fest, in front of an electrified audience.
Introduced by director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay (returning for their third “Trolls”film together), along with co-director Tim Heitz, the whimsical world of “Trolls Band Together” unveiled itself as a richer and brighter universe than ever, leaving fans’ eyes sparkling.
