Since ABC’s hit series “Scrubs” wrapped its nine-season run in 2010, Hollywood has mostly shied away from comedies set in hospitals — at times a tough place to find laughs — though there have been outliers like Fox and Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Warner Bros. and Adult Swim’s absurdist “Childrens Hospital” and HBO’s critically acclaimed “Getting On.”

NBC is the latest to attempt it with “St. Denis Medical,” a new sitcom that blends this challenging setting with a popular format: mockumentary. Can Hollywood find comedy inside a hospital in 2024, especially from a show that focuses on hospital workers’ everyday lives and following a global pandemic?

To try to find out, TheWrap did an exclusive set visit in the last week of filming for the show’s 18-episode first season, which is set to premiere on Nov. 12. TheWrap spoke with the “St. Denis Medical” cast and creators about crafting the comedy series.

CBS announced the next round of casting for Beyond The Gates. The soap will begin production in November. It’s slated to premiere on CBS in early 2025 and is from CBS Studios/NAACP Venture. The new cast members round out the extended families of the Duprees and key characters who influence their worlds.

Pakistan superstar Fawad Khan has signed onto two projects while Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor has joined veteran director Jahnu Barua’s latest film at the inaugural Tasveer Film Market. The Seattle-based South Asia-focused market concluded recently.

“Behind the Scenes,” a newsroom thriller, is being developed by producers Bilal Sami, Raza Namazi and Suri Gopalan of Film Lab++, in collaboration with Khan. Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s Modoxy Media has joined as executive producer. The dark comedy will feature talents including Mehreen Jabbar (“Jackson Heights”), Sarmad Khoosat (“Joyland”) and Mohammed Ali Naqvi (“Insha’Allah Democracy”) behind the camera.

The actor is also set to play a key role in “The Prisoner,” a crime thriller series for Awedacious Originals. Based on Omar Shahid’s bestseller, the 1990s-set Pakistani drama is created by Parisa Siddiqi and Ahmer Khan. Khan will play one of the two daring cops who embark on a covert mission...

The “Big Bang Theory” spinoff series in the works at Max has found its first three cast members.

Variety has learned from sources that Brian Posehn, Lauren Lapkus, and Kevin Sussman will all star in the potential show, which was originally announced as being in development at Max back in April 2023. Exact plot details remain under wraps but all three actors would reprise their roles from the original series.

The show remains in development and has not been greenlit to series at this time, with Posehn, Sussman, and Lapkus currently under talent holding deals. “Big Bang Theory” co-creator Chuck Lorre is executive producing the new project via Chuck Lorre Productions, with Lorre currently under an overall deal with series studio Warner Bros. Television.

Mad Men vet Christina Hendricks is set to co-star opposite Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ellen Pompeo in Hulu’s forthcoming limited series Natalia, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Formerly titled Orphan, Natalia is inspired by the true story of Natalia Grace and follows a Midwestern couple — Kristine and Michael Barnett (played by Pompeo and The Morning Show‘s Mark Duplass) — who adopt what they believe is an 8-year-old Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise the girl alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe she may not be who she says she is.

A fiendish serial killer is compiling a “masterpiece” in the new trailer for Prime Video’s Cross — and Aldis Hodge’s titular crimesolver is determined to stop him.

In Cross, which is based on characters from the James Patterson novels and is shepherded by Burn Notice vet Ben Watkins, Hodge (Leverage) plays Alex Cross, who is uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify — and ultimately capture — the murderers. Alex is “brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions,” per the streamer. “A doting father and family man single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers.

Christina Hendricks is inevitably one of the most acclaimed actresses today, with her charismatic personality and truly remarkable acting prowess proving she’s worthy of every single ounce of the commendation she gets. Launched to extraordinary success with her breakthrough role in Mad Men, she has since scored quite a few credits to her name in some critically praised projects.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the brand new trailer for their upcoming action-advernture Christmas comedy Red One, and it's considerable step up from the teaser trailer as Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson) and Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans) team-up to save Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons).

The new trailer takes a slightly more serious tone than the previous one and notably shifts the focus to Evans' character, who gets quite a bit more spotlight this time as he's recruited by the North Pole to aid their head of security, played by Johnson, in this high stakes rescue mission.

Dexter‘s prequel series Original Sin will get underway in December, TVLine has learned. The drama, which follows the original show’s central character during his teenage years, will premiere on Sunday, Dec. 15, on the linear Paramount+ With Showtime cable network; the episode will be available to stream on Paramount+ (for subscribers with the Paramount+ With Showtime plan) two days earlier, on Friday, Dec. 13.

Emmy and Oscar winner Susanne Bier directs all six episodes and executive produces the series alongside showrunner Jenna Lamia (Good Girls). Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s New York Times best-selling novel, The Perfect Couple follows Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), a bride marrying into one of Nantucket’s wealthiest families. The groom’s mother, Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman), a famous novelist, spares no expense on the high-society wedding. But, when a dead body appears on the beach, everyone’s Champagne dreams quickly vanish and are replaced by suspicion. As secrets bubble up to the surface, an investigation takes hold that feels plucked from one of Greer’s books.

“The Perfect Couple” has all the makings of a prestige drama akin to the likes of “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing”: a star-studded cast, a murder mystery that unravels the façade of an upperclass community and, of course, Nicole Kidman.

But the Elin Hilderbrand adaptation had a much different start as a network pilot, which initially went into development at Fox in 2019 as a coproduction between Fox and SideCar. It was then SideCar’s Gail Berman who emailed Jenna Lamia about the potential of coming onboard as a writer — and Lamia was immediately sold.

“I didn’t even finish reading the email — I wrote back, ‘I am definitely the writer. You do not need to send me the book. I read it last summer when it came out … I’m a huge fan — what do I have to do to convince you that I’m a writer?'” showrunner Lamia told TheWrap.

Updated: “Hello, am I under arrest?,” So begins the official trailer for The Perfect Couple, Netflix’s upcoming murder mystery series starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber. Kidman and Schreiber are among the suspects when a dead body turns up on the beach during what is expected to be an idyllic weekend wedding in Nantucket.

Anticipation was high for “Bel-Air” two years ago, the dramatic flip of the beloved classic comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Kansas City native Morgan Cooper’s re-imagining of the pop culture fixture started as a fan film he uploaded to YouTube in 2019 that generated so much buzz that Will Smith himself jumped aboard as an executive producer. Dexter‘s titular character was a serial killer who went undetected for years, so it makes sense that a prequel about his teen years will contain secrets of its own — even for diehard fans of the original series.

TVLine’s Keisha Hatchett caught up with Molly Brown, who plays a young Deb in the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin, at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday, to get the lowdown on the new series. “The scripts are so good,” Brown teases in the video above. “There’s some really, really good stuff at the end of the season.”

Written by Jenna Bans (Desperate Housewives, Scandal, Good Girls) and Bill Krebs (No Tomorrow, Good Girls), the series focuses on four very different members of the titular garden club who “get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom,” per the official synopsis.

The world of Suits is officially getting larger.

NBC has given a series order to Suits: LA, a spinoff of/companion show to the former USA Network series-turned-streaming juggernaut. The network has also picked up Grosse Pointe Garden Society, a murder mystery from the team behind Good Girls.

NBC hasn’t scheduled either show yet, but it’s conceivable they could be ready for the second half of the 2024-25 season. Crime drama The Hunting Party is currently the only midseason scripted series on tap for the network.

Like its predecessor, Suits: LA comes from creator Aaron Korsh. Now, she’s back in the genre with “The Perfect Couple,” her first limited series for Netflix — and her first adaptation of a novel by the queen of beach reads, Elin Hilderbrand. Netflix released a teaser trailer for the six-episode limited series on Thursday, along with a link to a thematically appropriate Zola-esque wedding website.

Based on Hilderbrand’s 2018 murder mystery, “The Perfect Couple” is a story about wealth, power, and family. Here’s how Netflix describes it: “Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. The Orange Is The New Black star is to lead Haunting, a hybrid scripted/unscripted paranormal podcast. The series is told by those who witnessed incomprehensible, extraordinary, and spooky encounters with the dead.

The podcast, which launches on July 9, sees Lapkus play Therésa, a dead influencer from the “other side.” Believing that nothing says lifeless like a paranormal podcast hosted by a mere mortal, Lauren Aka Therésa presents real first-hand accounts and immersive audio to bring listeners face to face with the unexplainable.

The series, which will feature 32 episodes, comes from Glass Podcasts and iHeart Podcasts. It is exec produced by Lapkus, Nancy Glass, Andrea Gunning and Ben Fetterman as well as Ali Perry for iHeartPodcasts.

A new Dexter TV series is returning to television, but it will look very different. Michael C. Hall won’t be back as the titular character. He died in the last series at his son’s hands. However, this also won’t follow his son’s journey. The new show will be a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin. This means a new cast with a younger antihero.

The Dexter prequel series cast Patrick Gibson to play a young Dexter Morgan, replacing Hall in the role. HGTV interior designer Alison Victoria has launched her own production company, Briefly Gorgeous. The reality TV production company seeks to bring truth, authenticity and vulnerability to television by showcasing real stories and unfiltered emotions.

“Television should be more than just performance art,” Victoria said. “It should be a window into real lives, real stories, and real emotions. We’re tired of the superficial and staged. It’s time to peel back the curtain and reveal the authentic, vulnerable souls behind every captivating story.”

Victoria was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her HGTV series “Windy City Rehab.” She renovates properties in Chicago in the show. “Windy City Rehab” was recently renewed by HGTV for a fourth season.

Dexter: Original Sin has cast four new series regulars to join previously announced Patrick Gibson, who is taking over the titular serial killer role (in his younger years) made famous by Michael C. Hall in Showtime’s Dexter.

As production kicks off today in Miami with Clyde Phillips at the helm, James Martinez, Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love) and Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) have joined the series portraying younger versions of Og characters.

Martinez plays Angel Batista (originally portrayed by David Zayas), an up-and-coming homicide detective who leads with his heart; Milian plays Maria Laguerta (Luna Lauren Velez), Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective; and Shimizu plays Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee), a forensic analyst who eagerly shares his expertise while relishing the chance to boss around his new intern, Dexter Morgan.

Exclusive: 20th Century Studios has acquired an original feature pitch from Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (Booksmart), enlisting Gloria Sanchez to produce.

While plot specifics under wraps, the project is described as a mother-daughter comedy with two strong female roles.

On the film side, Haskins and Halpern most recently penned 80 for Brady, the comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, which Paramount released last year. They’re perhaps best known for scripting Booksmart, the BAFTA and WGA Award-nominated 2019 comedy directed by Olivia Wilde.

Creators of the CBS show Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, as well as the ABC sitcom Trophy Wife, the pair are currently under an overall deal in television at CBS Studios. Nominated for an Emmy for their work on staff of ABC’s Black-ish, they’ve also written on series like Good Girls (NBC), The Mayor (ABC) and Imaginary Mary (ABC), to name a few.

Three new series are set to premiere in the fall, including the drama Brilliant Minds, starring Zachary Quinto and inspired by the true story of a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist, Oliver Wolf, and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier — the human mind — while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.

St. Denis Medical, which stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, and David Alan Grier and is from co-creators Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, brings the laughs with a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors...

NBC’s schedule for the 2024-25 season doesn’t look that different from its current lineup: The Voice on Monday and Tuesday nights, the three Chicago dramas on Wednesday and Law & Order shows on Thursday.

It’s a business-as-usual lineup — but after last year’s strikes-affected schedule and the numerous disrpuptions of the pandemic year of 2020-21 still relatively fresh, that’s a good thing.

“Basically, it was just where do we put our sophomore shows and our our new shows on schedule?” Steve Kern, senior vp program planning and scheduling at NBC Entertainment, told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “Our wish was to have two comedy blocks on the fall schedule, and we were fortunate to have enough comedies to do it this year.”

Exclusive: Faye Dunaway (Bonnie & Clyde), Harvey Keitel (Bugsy) and Andrew McCarthy (The Blacklist) have signed on to star in Fate, a suspenseful, supernatural romance that will launch international sales via Highland Film Group at Cannes.

Set to enter production in Vancouver this month, the film’s plot is under wraps, though its key location, the fictional Vista hotel, is said to draw inspiration from the iconic Los Angeles movie theater of the same name, which filmmaker Quentin Tarantino refurbished in 2022. Jonathan Baker is directing and producing the project, which has been in development for five years, and tells Deadline, “there is an excellent chance it will stand as one of the most memorable love stories of our time.”

Known for iconic turns in films like Bonnie & Clyde and Chinatown, Dunaway comes to Fate after collaborating with Baker on his debut feature Inconceivable, a 2017 thriller also starring Gina Gershon, Nicky Whelan and Nicolas Cage.

Ahead of the series premiere of Cross, Prime Video is already prepping a second season of the drama based on the best-selling Alex Cross book series by James Patterson. Wes Chatham (Ahsoka), Matthew Lillard (Good Girls) and Jeanine Mason (Upload) are set to star opposite lead Aldis Hodge in Season 2 of the series, created, executive produced and showrun by Hand of God‘s Ben Watkins, sources tell Deadline. Almost exactly one year ago today, it was announced that Christina Hendricks of the TV shows Mad Men and Good Girls had signed on to star in the psychological thriller Reckoner… but Hendricks has since run into scheduling issues, so Deadline reports that she has had to drop out of the project, with Noomi Rapace of Prometheus and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stepping in to replace her.

Based on a short story by author Rachel Ingalls, Reckoner will mark the feature directorial debut of Nissar Modi, who previously wrote the 2013 horror film Breaking at the Edge and the 2015 sci-fi film Z for Zachariah. The story of Reckoner centers on an affluent woman whose carefully constructed life is disrupted by a young man connected to a tightly-held secret from her past.

The film is being produced by XYZ Films and Two & Two Pictures, with XYZ Films providing the financing.

Retta is back on the road touring more eyesores across the country for Season 5’s Ugliest House in America. The Parks and Recreation and Good Girls star brings her comedic flair as she visits 15 not-so-hot homes nominated by owners. The field is narrowed down in each episode by choosing one out of the three within a particular region. In the end, there can be only one “Ugliest House in America,” decided upon by HGTV based on criteria such as ugly appearance, bad functionality, and surprise factors.
