Leah Remini has broken her silence around the death of Mike Rinder, a Scientology whistleblower who earned an Emmy for exposing the secret organization, and recently died.
“On Sunday, we lost a giant, and I lost a man who was more than a friend—he was family,” Remini said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. Remini and Rinder co-hosted the A&e docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath and the podcast Scientology: Fair Game as they exposed the organization.
The actress called Rinder her “trusted partner” in Scientology, to whom she turned when she herself left the secretive group in 2013.
“Mike saved my life and the life of my daughter and he stood by me through battles that felt insurmountable. I haven’t come to terms with the reality that I can’t call him and hear his voice anymore. I am shattered in ways I never thought possible. I...

In a terrifying beginning, “Papa” throws us into chaos: Ming, 15, kills his mother and sister with a meat knife, breaking up his family. The shocking event serves as the story’s pivot. Yuen (Sean Lau) and Yin (Jo Koo) run a busy 24-hour restaurant where community life thrives amidst the smell of fried noodles. Before the tragedy, the family seems normal. Tension, shown by Ming’s shyness and obvious mental problems, lies beneath this surface.
Yuen deals with guilt and the unanswered question, “Why?” in The Aftermath, a visceral study of grief. The non-linear narrative that reflects his broken mind draws us into a philosophical discussion of causality. Flashbacks show glimpses of better times, contrasting warmth with the cold reality of loss and reminding us how quickly joy can turn into despair.
This structure doesn’t follow a straight line; it reflects the chaos of grief and is stylistic. Between joy and despair,...

Dre (Miriam A. Hyman) was a key character in The Chi, but her abrupt exit left some viewers scratching their heads. Dre is first introduced in The Chi in season 3, episode 1, "Foe 'Nem", as a high school counselor and Nina Williams' (Tyla Abercrumbie) new partner, eventually marrying her. Nina is the perfect person to slide into Kevin's (Alex R. Hibbert) and Kiesha's (Birgundi Baker) lives, and she takes her role as a co-parent to Nina's children seriously. New characters are often introduced in this Showtime original series, but Dre made a real impact.
While Dre was never a part of the main cast, she appeared in nearly every episode of seasons 3 through 6 and provided a strong foundation for her family. Not only was Hyman excellent, Dre was a strong LGBTQ+ character in the popular series, and her relationship with Nina was normalized to the point that it was barely even commented on.

Little House on the Prairie didn't shy away from dark themes, featuring episodes on murder, rape, disease outbreaks, and addiction issues. The Pitch: A Meddlesome Producer’s Bloodiest, Briniest Catch of the Day

When she witnesses a passenger tossed overboard in the dead of night, no one believes her story as all on the ship have been accounted for. Doggedly she searches for answers, putting her own life in danger as the boat barrels through the desolate North Sea.

The Chi’s Emmett is a smooth talker, as he himself notes in this week’s midseason premiere. “I’ve got the gift of gab,” he confidently tells Jada and Darnell. “With women, not criminals!” his mother shoots back. It’s an important point, given the conversation that Emmett thinks he’s ready for by the end of the episode. (Spoiler alert: He has no idea how much worse things can get.)
And that’s really saying something, given that Emmett was already at a lifetime low, having just botched a murder attempt on the high-powered gangster who runs the South Side of Chicago.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 did not just have a ‘two’ in its name, it also gave players two Spider-Man’s to play with. That’s just one example of how much thought and effort the makers at Insomniac Studios put into making the game. And it did pay off. It turned out to be a critical and financial success when it launched in October 2023.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gave players the opportunity to web through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens while making the two Spider-men Peter Parker and Miles Morale perform some aerobatics above New York’s skyscrapers. Besides, it brought in new suits and styles along with a range of accessibility options. It was splendid in every way, just as the makers envisioned it.

Most of us have quietly curtailed our lockdown hobbies, but internet creator Teigan Reamsbottom is still getting up at 4 a.m. to curate camp-classic pop culture video clips. He also does his best to improve the video quality using a dedicated gaming computer he’s stuffed full of Ram and a software suite that uses machine-learning algorithms to preserve the clips’ original characteristics.
In a world where movies can be vanished for tax write-offs and physical media can be scarce, it’s heartening to see pop-culture artifacts unearthed — even if it means that no ’80s or ’90s celebrity is safe.
Exhibit A: from the heyday of “Sex and the City,” an interview with Kim Cattrall where she scat sings while her then-husband Mark plays an upright bass. The clip has long been an internet fixture (it was once the subject of an exhibit at Lower East Side gallery THNK1994). It...

The Pitch: Can Documentaries Make for Great Midnight Movies?
American documentaries are facing headwinds in awards. It’s not my area of expertise. But Anne Thompson’s predictions for the Best Documentary Feature race ahead of the 96th Oscars on Sunday explain the situation well.
“With the international membership now representing more than 20 percent of the total voters, this year all five documentary nominees were international,” Thompson wrote, tying the trend to numerous non-fiction films left without distributors at Sundance.

Keira Knightley’s slender frame, sharp features, and expressive eyes give her a stunning presence on screen. She carries herself with grace and poise, even in gritty roles.

On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

The Pitch: Then All the Cavemen (and Founding Fathers) Loved Him
The magic of a good Christmas is an unparalleled childhood experience, but it always ends with the anticlimactic holiday hangover that is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The final day of the year and the first day of the new one can be plenty of fun for adults, as they revolve around a paradoxical combination of socially sanctioned binge drinking and a renewed focus on fitness and career goals. But since one of those things is off...

A sci-fi series based on Martha Wells novels, “The Murderbot Diaries,” has landed at Apple TV+.
Hailing from “About a Boy” creators Chris and Paul Weitz, “Murderbots” follows a self-hacking security android who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable “clients.” Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe. Alexander Skarsgård will lead the series and will serve as executive producer.
The Weitz brothers will write, direct, and produce under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano also executive produces alongside for Depth of Field. David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Martha Wells will serve as consulting producer. Paramount Television Studios produces the series.
The project marks the second collaboration between Apple TV+ and Goyer, who...

The Pitch: Blonde Chick Underestimates Her Powers in Icy Tribute to Being Single
Cinematic homonyms are something of a small passion for me.
Whether it’s British spies vs. American superheroes in “The Avengers,” or Noah Baumbach’s “Kicking and Screaming” not starring Will Ferrell, movies that share the same title are fun oddities that recall anecdotes of auditoriums mistakenly shown the wrong films. (Shout out to the “Peter Rabbit” patrons who bore witness to a trailer for “Hereditary” in 2018; still beats me how that one happened.)

"Waco: The Aftermath" is a sequel series that explores the events after the Waco siege, focusing on the trial of Branch Davidian members and its impact on American militias and Timothy McVeigh. The show delves into philosophy, government, and individual rights, but its storytelling could have benefited from more than the five episodes provided. The cast of "Waco: The Aftermath" features talented actors with long and celebrated filmographies and TV credits, including Michael Shannon, Giovanni Ribisi, Keean Johnson, Abbey Lee, and Alex Breaux.
The Waco: The Aftermath cast includes an ensemble of talented actors well-known for a variety of very different TV and film roles.
