Siegfried Lenz, the author of the book, based the story on his own experiences. But he was not on the east front. He deserted the German navy - in Denmark in the small city Næstved.
Siegfried Lenz wrote the book in 1951 but the publisher refused to publish it as the story was too controversial. In 2016, two years after he died, the book was finally published.
