At one point, Will Smith was the biggest movie star in the world. While he had a bit of a PR snafu (to put it lightly) a couple of years ago when he slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, he's recovered well in the eyes of the public, given the success of this year's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" at the box office. Margot Robbie, meanwhile, is about as big as modern stars get, with her rise to stardom culminating in last year's mega-hit "Barbie." So, what happens when you put these two big stars in a movie together? You get a number one hit on Netflix. It just so happens that the movie in question was made nearly a decade ago.

Sony Pictures Television is looking for its next generation of viewers.
The studio’s kids division has launched a YouTube hub called Kidzuko targeted at children ages 3-8 that will offer them (and their parents) free access to some of Sony’s kids content. The channel, which went live Thursday morning, features episodes of Sony-produced series Octonauts, The Creature Cases, Peter Rabbit and Chico Bon Bon: Monkey With a Tool Belt, along with clips, compilation videos, educational content and shorts showing how to draw certain characters, among other offerings.
Kidzuko is part of a strategy at Sony Pictures Television — Kids, headed by Joe D’Ambrosia, to meet young viewers where they are — which is most often YouTube — and introduce them to the studio’s content.
“The watch time for kids on YouTube is just growing every year,” D’Ambrosia, executive vp and general manager for Spt — Kids, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

According to director Will Gluck, studios wanted anything but “Anyone but You” in theaters. Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that while he received numerous streaming offers for the original rom-com starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, he had to “convince” studios to even entertain a theatrical release. Thankfully, Gluck’s longtime partnership with Columbia led to the film opening in theaters. The rest is history — and profit.
“It was a little bit of a battle to convince everybody,” Gluck said. “I just had to explain how good the people in the movie are and how impactful a theatrical experience could be.”
Gluck previously directed adaptations of “Annie” and “Peter Rabbit” for Columbia. He also helmed several projects for Columbia’s sister label Screen Gems, including the beloved “Easy A.”
“Anyone but You” went on to gross $88 million domestically against a $25 million budget. The film earned $220.2 million at the worldwide box office.

Greg Daniels and Michael Koman could return to The Office universe, with Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) as cast members of the proposed spinoff. Gleeson and Inpacciatore would be part of an ensemble for the project, which Deadline says is close to entering production. Plot details about The Office spinoff remain a mystery.
We know only a little about the project beyond its setting in The Office universe. Daniels wants fans to know it’s not a reboot, even though it takes place in the same arena as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series focusing on the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees. Daniels says the new show could feature a camera crew doing a documentary about a subject outside the day-to-day lives of office workers surviving the daily grind and their toxic boss.
Domhnall Gleeson launched his acting career in 2001 as a character named Byrne in an episode of Rebel Heart.

Rob Lieber, the writer of the latest Karate Kid movie that is currently in production, has signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
The writer was previously at Verve. That agency, however, underwent an internal battle amongst partners that went public, leading to the ouster of one of the founding partners. Several literary clients were caught in the brouhaha’s wake, with UTA picking several of them up in the last month or so. The agency previously signed comics author and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan and Masters of the Air co-creator Jon Orloff.
Lieber made a name for himself in the studio family space, with producer credits in Sony’s hit live-action/CG hybrid Peter Rabbit as well as Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, both released in 2018, and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which starred Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

William Astor, who co-founded kids TV juggernaut Silvergate Media, has stepped down as the company’s chair.
Silvergate, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in 2019, quietly re-branded as Sony Pictures Television – Kids in 2022.
“I can confirm I am no longer associated with Sony and have resigned as director and chairman,” Astor told Variety. He stepped down at the end of December.
Astor originally co-founded the company alongside well-known British television producer Waheed Alli back in 2011. It is best known for producing children’s animated franchises “Octonauts” — which has inspired films and theme park attractions across the world — and Nickelodeon animation “Peter Rabbit,” based on the classic children’s books by Beatrix Potter. It has also produced shows including “Hilda,” a Netflix animated series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels of the same name, and Nickelodeon’s “Sunny Day,” about the adventures of a young hair stylist.

America has been starved for pure, unapologetic, multiplex-grade romantic comedies, and Will Gluck’s “Anyone but You” doesn’t waste any time announcing itself as one of those. The first five minutes alone serve up a classic meet-cute in a coffee shop, a funny but wholly illogical bit of physical comedy involving a splash of water that might be mistaken for a pee stain, and a magical — but chaste — night together in a personality-less bachelor pad that looks just like an Ikea showroom.
If not for the hint of self-awareness that allows Bea (Sydney Sweeney) to put Ben (Glen Powell) on blast for his dude-bro decor, nothing about this prologue would seem the least bit out of place at the start of a mid-tier Julia Roberts movie from 1997. Not the leading man whose chiseled smile makes your own features seem like the parody of a face by comparison, nor the...

Here's a crossover you never knew you needed until now. Decades after the original "The Karate Kid" put star Ralph Macchio on the map and introduced audiences to Pat Morita's beloved Mr. Miyagi, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith took a crack at remaking the classic in 2010 -- though in a modernized setting and, notably, not portraying the exact same characters from the original. The franchise kept the nostalgia going with Netflix's popular "Cobra Kai" series, which reunited Macchio's Daniel Larusso with William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence. Now, not even the Cobra Kai dojo feels big enough to contain what's coming down the pipeline next.
Sony Pictures breathlessly announced that a new "Karate Kid" movie is officially in the works. But get this: the twist is that both Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have been cast and will be "reprising their characters" from the respective franchise films they previously starred in.

Sony’s new Karate Kid project, which is an apparent separate entity from the popular series Cobra Kai, just got a bit of interesting casting. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Daniel Larusso himself, Ralph Macchio, will be joining Jackie Chan for the new, as of yet untitled, addition to the franchise. Earlier, it was reported that Sony had made room in their schedule for a new Karate Kid film that wasn’t intended to be a straight-up sequel to the original 1984 film nor a continuation of the Netflix show with all the legacy characters. Then it was revealed that Chan would be reprising his Mr. Han role from the 2010 remake. The inclusion of Macchio looks to be an attempt to merge the two worlds.
Additionally, Sony has also announced that there will be a global search to find the new karate kid to star in their film as the student.

Daisy Ridley, the cornerstone star of Disney's recent "Star Wars" trilogy, has a new movie out in theaters right now. Unfortunately, it seems like getting that news out to the masses proved challenging as hardly anyone went to see the film in question, which is director Neil Burger's "The Marsh King's Daughter." Sad to say, the movie tanked on its opening weekend, failing to even crack the Top 10 on the charts despite playing on more than 1,000 screens.
"The Marsh King's Daughter" debuted at just $849,120 over the weekend, putting it all the way at number 13 on the charts, per Box Office Mojo. Even Disney's re-release of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" made more, and we're talking about a 30-year-old movie that has been in re-release for three weekends.

Paul Noble, a veteran executive who served as co-head of global theatrical marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment since 2021, has died. He was 51.
The company confirmed to Deadline that Noble died September 9 of bulbar Als at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood. He has been diagnosed in summer 2021.
“Paul was a rare and marvelous human being, possessed with an abundance of positivity, warmth, humor and kindness,” Sony Chairman Tom Rothman wrote in an email to staff. “He faced his diagnosis with courage and grace and in doing so set a remarkable example for his family and, indeed, for all of us. To say he will be missed is of course an understatement.”
Following a decade-plus film-marketing career marketing at top agencies in London, Noble joined Sony Pictures in Los Angeles in 2015, initially as SVP International Marketing and later EVP before being promoted to Co-President of International Marketing in 2018. He was...

Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

When they sang "Ev'rybody wants to be a cat," that apparently included the Academy Award and six-time Grammy Award-winner, Questlove. In news first reported by Deadline, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is set to direct a live-action/animation hybrid remake of "The Aristocats" for the House of Mouse. The film is being compared to similar hybrid films like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Space Jam: A New Legacy," featuring live-action performers crossed with CGI. There's no word yet on whether or not this means the titular cats will look like CGI updates of their animated origins, or if this will be another semi-realistic uncanny valley adventure similar to Disney's recent remake of "The Lion King."
Admittedly, the timing of this announcement is somewhat suspicious, as Disney also announced that they'd be laying off roughly 7,000 employees starting this week. It's a shame that the news of Questlove's "The Aristocats" remake is coming on the...

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will direct a remake of Disney’s 1970 animated film “The Aristocats,” Disney has confirmed to TheWrap.
Questlove, who won an Oscar last year for his Hulu documentary “Summer of Soul,” will serve as director, executive producer, and oversee music on the project, which will be a live-action/animation hybrid retelling of the story of Duchess, a Parisian cat whom is left an immense fortune by her owner only to be thrown out into the countryside with her three kittens by a jealous butler. Out alone for the first time, Duchess and her kittens turn to a street-smart tomcat named Thomas O’Malley for help.

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Blasting into the mainstream as Rey in 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Daisy Ridley instantly became an exciting new presence in the world of movies. We don't need to wade into the idea of whether or not she qualifies as a movie star since the discourse around that subject has become obnoxious recently, but when you watch her on screen, it's undeniable she has "it" -- that elusive X-factor that draws you in as an audience member and makes you want to see more of what she's doing.
It's now been almost a full eight years since she became a household name. With her newest movie, "Sometimes I Think About Dying," playing at the Sundance Film Festival, it's time to take stock. What's going on with Daisy Ridley these days and does her latest movie do her justice?

Will Gluck is done playing with Peter Rabbit and is ready to return to the romantic comedy genre for a new untitled R-rated comedy. The new project shared exciting casting news on Wednesday, with reports coming in that Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell will star in Gluck’s next movie. The plot is shrouded in mystery. Still, we know Gluck is directing and rewriting Ilana Wolpert’s script.
Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Gluck are producing, with Sweeney producing via Fifty-Fifty Films. Natalie Sellers and Alyssa Altman serve as executive producers through Rk Films.
Gluck is the genius behind the camera for films like Easy A, Friends With Benefits, and the Peter Rabbit franchise. He’s in the throes of developing End of the World, an action comedy he plans to direct and co-write with Chris Brenner. Gluck is also attached to an adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit video game series Just Dance.

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy might have been very different if James Corden had achieved his goal of being cast as Frodo’s best friend and confidant, Samwise Gamgee. Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Corden confirmed a rumor that The Lord of the Rings was one of his first big-time auditions. Ultimately, the part went to Sean Astin, but Corden made it further into the casting process than one would assume.
When asked if the rumor about his audition was true, Corden said, “Yeah,” then added his audition was “not good.” According to Corden, “Every single person in London auditioned for ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Everybody. I auditioned for Samwise. I was doing it! The accent and everything! ‘Mr Frodo!'”
Corden was not alone when he auditioned for The Lord of the Rings. Two of his friends offered themselves as a tribute to the sprawling action-fantasy epic.

The October box office played out the way studios and analysts predicted it would: an improvement from a miserable September, but still well below where theaters need business to be. In fact, October’s box office came in at the lowest level in 21 years.
At the start of the month, distribution chiefs told TheWrap that they expected October domestic totals to be somewhere between 20-30 below the 623 million earned in October 2021, when Covid-delayed releases like “No Time to Die,” “Dune” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” accelerated the pandemic recovery process.
With a 468 million domestic total in October 2022, that prediction ended up being right on the money with a year-over-year monthly total drop of approximately 25. Still, ticket sales saw a 44 improvement over the 323 million total reported in September; but compared to past Octobers, it’s a more than two-decade low. Not counting the pandemic year of 2020, this is the first...
