The trailer of Ak vs Ak is out now, and while the audience is loving the style of Anil Kapoor, his co-star Anurag Kashyap, a popular director, is getting lauded for his acting skills too.
Ak vs Ak is not Anurag's first film as an actor, and he certainly is not the first Bollywood director to come in front of the camera.
Here's a list of present day directors who took on the challenge of being an actor for their own films or others':
Anurag Kashyap
He will be seen as a filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter of a filmstar in Vikramaditya Motwane's upcoming film "Ak vs Ak". He had also appeared as a cop in "Ghoomketu" directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra. Prior to this, he had acted as corrupt police officer, Acp Rane, in "Akira", directed by Ar Murugadoss. His role of gangster Bunty Bhaiya in "Shagird", helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia,...

In a recent interview for her upcoming film Akira, which releases in cinemas on 2nd September, actress Sonakshi Sinha mentioned that this is a great time to be a woman in Indian cinema. According to her, not only are women getting to play good characters, but the audience too, has become more accepting of these roles.
Looking back over the last couple of years and the types of films that have released in India, we couldn’t agree more.
From a damsel in distress to a figure of power, women have come a long way in Bollywood. With characters especially created keeping women in mind, this points to a new wave in Indian cinema, where women are being trusted to carry a film to box office success. This is a stark difference from the previous notion that the role of the protagonist was reserved only for a male character.

Often, we have seen Priyanka Chopra come out in support of women and their rights and she also has been a part of Unicef initiatives related to the cause. So it doesn't come as a surprise when the actress claims that she is a proud feminist but at the same time, she also understands and asserts the meaning of the word. 'Feminism', in her opinion, is a word that has been bastardized. Further describing the statement, Priyanka Chopra added that the concept of feminism has nothing to do with berating men or the opposite gender in any manner but it is a fight for just equal rights. Stressing on the fact that she believes in women power, Priyanka also declared that she isn't afraid of speaking her mind. With many celebrities getting into controversies and scandals due to certain statements they made on a public platform, some of them from...

Jai Gangaajal starring Priyanka Chopra which released on March 4th, 2016 has been receiving rave reviews for its hard-hitting storyline and incredible performances. The film also marks the debut of Prakash Jha who is known for his realistic cinema. Fans and critics alike praised the film and had the following to say:-
The idea of a woman cop straightening out the goons is instantly sexy. Especially when the cop is played by Priyanka Chopra, who is convincing as the tough-talking Abha. It’s very satisfying to see her pummel the bad guys. – Anupama Chopra
One must admit here that Jha surprises with his ease in front of the camera and decent acting abilities, but quite often the camera focuses a little too indulgently on him. Jha yet again successfully revisits the world he’s so familiar with, the rampant hooliganism, the fascinating and colourful lingo that we are all familiar with,...

The credit titles lied. They mentioned Priyanka Chopra first, Prakash Jha last, when in fact he virtually runs the show. In a film filled with enough villains to populate an entire village of perverse wrongdoers, only Jha’s character has a graph. As a subordinate cop he goes from abject corruption to haloed redemption, all within a running time of 2 and a half hours.
I say ‘running’ time with a purpose, as a lot of the characters in this film — and as usual in a Prakash Jha film – there are so many people in plot, living and dead, running across the frames that I lost count after a while. Better to go with the flow, I said. But where is the flow taking us, I wondered in dread as characters, good and bad, hung from trees like dangling rag-dolls.

Zubaan, the small-big film which opened alongside Prakash Jha's Jai Gangaajal finds itself in a peculiar bottleneck situation. Though it has been appreciated a lot more than Jai Gangaajal, Zubaan finds its voice being stifled by non-availability of screening outlets. Most of the shows and screens have been monopolized by Jai Gangaajal leaving Zubaan high and dry. Zubaan director Mozez Singh admits there was a scarcity of theatres. For those who thought Vicky Kaushal’s Masaan act last year was just a one-off flash in the pan affair, Zubaan is an eye-opener. Kaushal plays Dilsher, the waylaid Sikh boy from Gurdaspur who only wants to be successful in ways that we normally describe success. So he schemes his way into the heart mind home and property of a business tycoon Sikand (Manish Chaudhary, exuding arrogant power the way Amrish Puri did in Subhash Ghai’s Pardes) ends up getting what he thinks he wants.
From here onwards first-time director Mozez Singh (who must be kidding about being a debutant, which first-timer would be able to make film so confident and compelling??!!) charts Dilsher’s descent into a selfserving opportunism and then his sudden swerve into redemption. This journey back and forth on the scale of morality has been undertaken repeatedly in films as far-ranging as Raman Kumar’s...

In spite of Prakash Jha’s films being socio-politico in nature, the heroes in almost all of his films are known to be very macho in their approach as the protagonists, with the action element strongly stamped across. There has never been a compromise on showing the heroism of the protagonist. However, interestingly, while Jha’s films have largely been male-dominated, he has never neglected the heroines of the film. He has in fact always shown them to be the upright strong women, upholding the morals of the society. And even in their most deglamourised avatars, the filmmaker has always lent them an earthy appeal aesthetically.
As a director, Jha has worked with all the top line heroines – right from Deepti Naval to shabana Azmi and then from Madhuri Dixit to Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Katrina Kaif. But what sets the filmmaker apart are the kind...

Filmmaker Prakash Jha, whose films are known to be seeped in the realism of soci-politico system, is revisiting the cop-drama genre with Jai GangaaJal, thirteen years after his National Award winning GangaaJal (2003) in the same genre. However, inspite of the similar names and the protagonists being topcops in both the films, the upcoming Priyanka Chopra starrer is in fact, not a sequel to the Ajay Devgn starrer hit.
Talking about the similarity in names and why the film is called Jai GangaaJal he says, “The difference between the two films is that they are stories and situations of two different Indian societies – the society of 2003 which is hugely different from that of 2016. The similarity is the kind of compulsions under which the police functions and the challenges they have to resolve”.
Both are cop dramas, interweaved with the society fabric mirroring the kind of respect that the police force command.

Noted character actor Murli Sharma shares that while he has played the baddie in all his films with Prakash Jha including Apaharan and Chakravyuh, all the roles have been very different from each other. But Murli, who is also playing a baddie in Jha’s upcoming Jai GangaaJal as well, reveals that apart from being the villain, his roles in the Jha films have one big similarity. “There is always a chase sequence right before my character gets killed off, so I am always running before being killed,” he exclaims.
The actor was made to run in Apaharan, while in Chakravyuh too he gets chased in the jungles. And in Jai GangaaJal too there is a chase sequence shot on Murli. “My role in Jai GangaaJal is completely different from my previous roles and has an effeminate streak. So, I thought for a change I would not have a chase sequence in this one.

The new promo of the film focuses on Chopra as Ips officer Sp Abha Mathur, who takes charge of Bankipur district and announces on her first day of duty that she is not here to just throw her weight around, but to crack down on law-breakers. The promo then goes on to show how Mathur takes on the anti-social elements in her jurisdiction, despite opposition from local politicians, who don’t want her to upset the nexus of politics and crime.
Priyanka has nailed the tough cop look and her dialogue delivery and body language will bring back memories of cop films like Ardh Satya and Zanjeer, which had featured righteous and incorruptible cops.
