The babies in the beauty pageant are being held by women, each of whom is conspicuously covered with a blanket. This references a practice in mid-19th century photo portraiture in which mothers or guardians would pose underneath a sheet or blanket with their child sitting on their lap, so as to better hold their children still. The practice of posing children with "invisible mothers" would have largely died out by the time Another Period takes place.
