Featured review
With perhaps the only fully developed, and ongoing, story lines featuring Brandon and Callie, it should come as no surprise they dominate the episode leading up to the season 1 finale. Their love affair has been central to the show, and while we may have Jude and his curiosity; Mariana and Jesus' mother Anna; and the relationship of Stef and Lena, with their own personal issues adding flavor to the show; it all leads to one simple romance which I can never tell if it maybe a "Trojan Horse" for all the topics The Fosters has gone over, or if it simply is just the main focus for now.
Topic 1: Welcome Back Wyatt (Callie)
After being away for a while, traveling to the Midwest to live with his grandparents, Wyatt has returned without his parents, or anyone really, and between living in his car or staying at Daphne's a little while, he has comeback suddenly and strangely without many questions asked. Well, except why he called Stef and Lena, and in his explanation he shows some type of regret in not just running with Callie, and in that moment you are reminded why him and Callie seemed so perfect together. But, both have a lot going on right now, while they are there for each other, any potential romance is on hold.
Topic 2: The Twins' Relationship Issues (Jesus & Mariana)
And I'd argue perhaps the twins should take the same approach to their relationships. Starting with Jesus, since Lexi dumped him and he is now back to trying to be with Emma but not being first choice seemingly still burns a bit. Plus, with Jesus not doing well without his meds, it seems the last thing he needs now is a girlfriend. You see, he got kicked off the wrestling team because he is starting to fail classes and then, to add onto that, he is starting to get that aggressiveness we saw when he stuck up for Lexi what seems like long ago. It gets bad though at the winter dance when he becomes a more aggressive version of Brandon who can't really deal with his jealousy over the date Emma has that isn't him. I thought for a second Jesus was about to get into an altercation, albeit over making sure Emma didn't get in a car with a guy who was drunk. Either way though, his actions do not impress Emma and seemingly never mind a relationship, their friendship maybe in trouble.
As for Mariana, Zach's mom is still sort of troubling. Which I can't put my finger on the exact reason why, but I do believe when she looks at Zach she thinks of Zach's father and in these moments she flashes back to when she found out about Zach's dad maybe cheating, and sees Marianna as the mistress. This idea though solely stems from the way she acts around Zach, in which she may not treat him like he is her husband, but the way she flips from happy, go lucky, and slightly inappropriate, to calling Mariana a slut and telling her to stay away from her son, it becomes hard to understand any of this when no real explanation is given.
Topic 3: When It All Comes to A Head (Brandon)
Luckily though, at least one story decides to be straight forward with us, and naturally it is Brandon's story. First things first, Anna tries to extort $10,000 out of Stef so that she won't snitch about Brandon giving her money, Stef returns the threat and says nothing. Mike tries to put Dani in the position as the one who is helping to undo what Stef's household had did to Brandon. But though Dani has done a lot of good for Brandon, she then does something which may mess up the kid's life.
As Dani mentioned in an earlier episode, she and Mike maybe in support of Brandon and Callie's relationship. Problem is, just as it seems Brandon maybe, baby steps mind you, moving on, Dani damn near plants a demonic seed to bring back that selfish prick. Not to say that Brandon didn't have a moment where you can remember when he was likable, which we see when him and Callie chat in the music room from early, early in the season, but damn if Dani didn't bring the beast back. What is worse though is that now Wyatt is back so not only is Brandon dealing with his emotions which he doesn't have the best control over, but now a dose of jealousy is added in as Callie caters to Wyatt's needs over Brandon's.
Things get really bad though since Vico and Talia have seemingly teamed up in order to extract revenge. However, in this team up only Callie can become the victim for, as we saw a few episodes ago, Vico has made a fake ID for Callie, and somehow someone has used this fake ID to buy alcohol. Pair this with Callie being on the ballot to be Queen for the winter formal, her winning, and Talia snitching and a girl saying Callie bought their votes, you got a problem. Not to mention, Principal Sanchez gave Callie's parole officer a bad review, which continues to make situations look bad on her when she is confronted about the situation.
Luckily though, Brandon hears enough about this to go after Vico, who seemingly covered his tracks, and this leads Wyatt to breaking up a would-be fight and telling him to help Callie. So, now Brandon throws himself to the lions, confessing he did it because Callie wouldn't love him the way he wanted, and the episode ends with him in a police car confessing about Anna, Dani, and everything that has happened in the 2nd half of the season. Leaving us to wonder, how bad will the fallout be?
