It needs to be said that a show like Elsbeth not only surpasses viewers’ expectations but goes above and beyond to create new ones. It’s a good sign when a show’s biggest competition is its previous season.

Who could have ever thought that a show about a plucky attorney transplant to the Big Apple would deliver such a universally loved story? Anyone who has ever seen Carrie Preston in anything could, that’s who.

Preston fully embodies Elsbeth‘s campy tone and whimsical drama. However, the actor’s greatest strength is in keeping her character feeling natural with so many quirky nuances.

Somehow, the series not only remains fresh but is capitalizing on its eccentric nature, keeping each episode from feeling repeated or contrived.

A large part of that is due to the over-the-top murders coupled with unforgettable and hilarious characters portrayed by beloved TV and film vets.

30 Rock remains one of TV’s most beloved comedy series. It was awarded 16 Emmys in its 7-year stint at NBC. What really set the show apart was both the fast humor and the characters that fans still remember. Developed by Tina Fey and mostly inspired by her own work for Saturday Night Live as a head writer, the show depicted fictional sketches of the working environment of an NBC sketch comedy show.

This year, for the first time since 1982, the last three consecutive Best Comedy Writing Emmy winners are nominated in the category simultaneously. Looking to emulate “Taxi’s” defeat of “M*A*S*H” and “Barney Miller” is reigning victor “The Bear,” which faces its most serious challenges from “Hacks” and “Abbott Elementary.”

Returning from an almost two-year break in March, all three seasons of Girls5eva are currently on Netflix. And while the show didn’t manage to crack the streamer’s desirable (albeit kind of mysterious) Top 10, creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino says she’s thrilled with opening up her cult comedy to a massive global subscriber base — even if there’s still no official word on a potential fourth season.

Speaking from her home in New York at the end of May, the Colbert Report and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s performance, the shared sensibility of executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlocks comedy roster and her recent debut as a Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! panelist.

You recently dropped the third season on Netflix, along with the first two seasons. Do you feel like the show has found a new audience?...

Elsbeth has a much more fun and whimsical tone than its fellow series, all of which are part of The Good Wife franchise.

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.

Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Steve Carell, star of “The Office,” will join previously announced Tina Fey, creator and star of “30 Rock,” in “The Four Seasons,” a Netflix comedy series based on the 1981 film of the same name. The streaming service announced Carell’s casting on Wednesday.

Fey and Carell previously starred in the 2010 comedy “Date Night,” in which they played a married couple. Their characters in “The Four Seasons” have not yet been announced.

The film follows three couples who go on quarterly vacations together, where the stresses and joys of marriage get magnified, especially after one of the men leaves his wife for a younger woman and begins bringing her on the trips. The film’s point-of-view couple is played by Alan Alda (who also wrote and directed) and Carol Burnett. The film was previously adapted into a short-lived sitcom in 1984.

The Office grad has closed a deal to co-star in Netflix’s The Four Seasons, the update of the 1981 Alan Alda feature film of the same name. The role reunites Carell with Tina Fey after the duo starred as a married couple in the 2010 movie Date Night.

Ordered straight-to-series in January after Netflix won the show following a bidding war after the conclusion of last year’s dual strikes, the adaptation was co-created by Fey and her fellow 30 Rock alums Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield.

Jane Wiseman, who was previously VP of original series at Netflix, has joined Sister Entertainment Group as the head of U.S. television, according to Cindy Holland, global CEO of Sister Entertainment Group. Wiseman is based in Los Angeles and will lead the U.S. television business for Sister, specifically focused on development and production of premium scripted series.

“Jane is a multi-faceted executive with great passion and curiosity, combined with smart business and creative instincts. Former Netflix Head of Comedy Jane Wiseman is joining Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch‘s Sister entertainment group in a newly created position as Head of U.S. Television. Based in Los Angeles, Wiseman will report to Cindy Holland, Sister’s Global CEO, and will lead the company’s U.S. television business, specifically focused on development and production of premium scripted series.

This is the second senior member of Holland’s executive team at Netflix, where she led original TV content for many years, that she has brought to Sister since joining the company in July. In October, Efrain Miron was named to another newly created position as President, Strategy and Business Affairs, with a focus on the U.S. studio and portfolio companies.

Building out Sister’s U.S. operation under Holland has been a major priority as the company is plotting further expansion and a path to profitability.
