It needs to be said that a show like Elsbeth not only surpasses viewers’ expectations but goes above and beyond to create new ones. It’s a good sign when a show’s biggest competition is its previous season.
Who could have ever thought that a show about a plucky attorney transplant to the Big Apple would deliver such a universally loved story? Anyone who has ever seen Carrie Preston in anything could, that’s who.
Preston fully embodies Elsbeth‘s campy tone and whimsical drama. However, the actor’s greatest strength is in keeping her character feeling natural with so many quirky nuances.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
Somehow, the series not only remains fresh but is capitalizing on its eccentric nature, keeping each episode from feeling repeated or contrived.
A large part of that is due to the over-the-top murders coupled with unforgettable and hilarious characters portrayed by beloved TV and film vets.

30 Rock remains one of TV’s most beloved comedy series. It was awarded 16 Emmys in its 7-year stint at NBC. What really set the show apart was both the fast humor and the characters that fans still remember. Developed by Tina Fey and mostly inspired by her own work for Saturday Night Live as a head writer, the show depicted fictional sketches of the working environment of an NBC sketch comedy show.

Most memorable performances from the show were delivered by characters like manipulative executive Jack Donaghey played by Alec Baldwin, and Liz Lemon portrayed by Tina Fey among many others. As we enter 2025, the actors who made viewers laugh for seven seasons have followed different careers.

TV has a way of making us fall in love with the oddballs.
They’re the ones who march to the beat of their own drum, sometimes driving their friends and coworkers crazy but always charming us in the process.
These lovable misfits may not fit into society’s mold, but their quirks and imperfections make them unforgettable.

Whether it’s an eccentric detective, a socially awkward genius, or a glitter-loving optimist, these characters prove that being different is what makes them special.
Over the years, they’ve made us laugh, cry, and even cringe, but they’ve also taught us to embrace what makes us unique.
From classic sitcoms to modern dramedies, these misfits have left a lasting impression—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

When “Hacks” won the Emmy earlier this year for outstanding comedy, it shocked pundits who had expected another victory for “The Bear.” Even the “Hacks” producers were gobsmacked, jaws agape as they reached the stage. But for the execs at Universal Television, which produces “Hacks” for Max, that stunning moment came with a little vindication.
“‘Gratifying’ is an understatement,” says Universal TV president Erin Underhill. “It was huge. For me personally, it was a career highlight. This was not a show buyers were looking for. Everyone passed on it.”
The “Hacks” win was not only a shot in the arm for the comedy genre — which is experiencing a bit of a renaissance this fall — but also another notch in the belt for Universal’s comedy division, which is also seeing an uptick in its output.

How should we face the future that's to come? If the TV shows that moved us in 2024 are any indication, the answer involves collective action, the preservation of hope and anger, and -- as shows like "Evil" and "English Teacher" effortlessly remind us -- the ability to laugh in the face of the absurd. It seems likely that the creators making our favorite shows didn't foresee some of this year's most dystopic global and national events, but their art speaks to a world in unprecedented chaos nonetheless. Whether you're more into the stalwart mottos of Starfleet, the unspoken camaraderie between the vulnerable women of Ennis, Alaska, or the "okey-dokey" attitude of Vault 33's best and brightest, the best television of 2024 offered a number of stirring solutions to the question we're all anxious to ask: how the hell do we get through this?...

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Daredevil aren't two shows that are often mentioned in the same breath, but in 2019, the two Netflix shows crossed paths in a very unexpected way. The Ellie Kemper-led sitcom and the Charlie Cox-led superhero drama shared very little in common other than their New York City setting. However, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt found a way to openly acknowledge Daredevil in a very clever and meta way before the sitcom came to a natural conclusion after four seasons in 2019 and went out on a high.

In January 2007, the pioneering DVD-by-mail rental service Netflix launched a streaming media platform, introducing the idea of video on demand via an Internet connection. A the time of launch, Netflix only had 1,000 films available for streaming. A month later, Netflix would mail out its billionth DVD to a customer, which marked the beginning of the end. In the following years, thanks to partnerships made with studios and broadcasters like Disney, Warner Bros., Viacom, DreamWorks, The CW, and AMC, Netflix's streaming service was proving more popular than the mail subscription service that built their company.
But on February 1, 2013, a massive shift occurred when Netflix released "House of Cards," its first original, United States-produced series exclusive to the streamer. It wasn't just a riveting political drama, but one that also boasted huge Hollywood names like a yet-to-be-disgraced Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. New Girl is definitely one of the most heartwarmingly funny series about friends and love created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The Fox comedy series follows the chirpy and naive Jessica as she moves into a loft with 3 guys who are equally as quirky and weird. New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Damon Wayans Jr., Nasim Pedrad, and Megan Fox. “Sorry, my dog is escaping,” said Jon Hamm to IndieWire, breaking off an answer midway through a phone interview. “I just opened the door and he went for it.”
The Hollywood heavyweight is managing a lot these days. Formerly known as Don Draper from “Mad Men,” the A-list actor is juggling two Emmy nominations against the backdrop of his ever-boiling film career. The multi-faceted bad guys who Hamm plays — Sheriff Roy Tillman in FX’s “Fargo” Season 5 and billionaire tech mogul Paul Marks in Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” Season 3 — earned the versatile performer nods for both Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The Television Academy has recognized Hamm with 18 nominations (and one win) to date, but this is the fourth year he’s been nominated for two parts simultaneously.

There's a scene midway through Chuck Russell's 1994 comedy The Mask that stands out as an absolute comic masterstroke—zero CGI cartoon antics required. Jon Hamm is not simply back in the conversation, he’s a double Emmy nominee.
Earlier today, the TV Academy recognized his work in both Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, where he did a season-long arc as the Elon Musk-esque tech billionaire Paul Marks, and FX’s Fargo, where he played the villainous Sheriff Roy Tillman, a Maga Marlboro Man.
This is hardly the first time Hamm’s name has been rattled off on Emmy nominees morning, of course. Prior to this morning, he’d been nominated 16 times — a mix of accolades for Mad Men, 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt — and earned his first win for the final season of Mad Men in 2015. Still, he notes, it hits differently in today’s Peak TV landscape.

Returning from an almost two-year break in March, all three seasons of Girls5eva are currently on Netflix. And while the show didn’t manage to crack the streamer’s desirable (albeit kind of mysterious) Top 10, creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino says she’s thrilled with opening up her cult comedy to a massive global subscriber base — even if there’s still no official word on a potential fourth season.
Speaking from her home in New York at the end of May, the Colbert Report and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s performance, the shared sensibility of executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlocks comedy roster and her recent debut as a Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! panelist.

Everyone's favorite Chicago attorney came to the Big Apple as the "police of the police" to keep an eye on the boys in blue while lending a hand to the NYPD string of murder cases.
By the end of Elsbeth Season 1 Episode 1, viewers found out that the lawyer turned sleuth was in NYC for a different matter entirely.
Elsbeth was sent to watch Captain Wagner, but that didn't stop this intrepid purveyor of truth from cracking one murder case after another.
One of the first things audiences likely noticed about this series is that it is a spinoff of a spinoff, as Elsbeth first appeared in The Good Wife.
She then went to The Good Fight, where she continued her quirky approach and eventually got her own series.
Elsbeth has a much more fun and whimsical tone than its fellow series, all of which are part of The Good Wife franchise.

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

Tina Fey, the American actress known for “Saturday Night Live,” “Mean Girls,” “30 Rock,” and “Date Night,” stands at 5 feet 4 ½ inches (163.8 cm). This information comes directly from Fey, who corrected a common misconception about her height in an interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer, saying, “The Internet says I’m 5-foot-2. And I’m 5-4 and a half.”
She also mentioned her height in Glam in 2008. For context, the average American woman is around 5 feet 4 inches (162.5 cm). Therefore, Fey’s height is just slightly above this average, aligning her closely with the height of many American women.

Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.

Former Netflix Head of Comedy Jane Wiseman is joining Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch‘s Sister entertainment group in a newly created position as Head of U.S. Television. Based in Los Angeles, Wiseman will report to Cindy Holland, Sister’s Global CEO, and will lead the company’s U.S. television business, specifically focused on development and production of premium scripted series.
This is the second senior member of Holland’s executive team at Netflix, where she led original TV content for many years, that she has brought to Sister since joining the company in July. In October, Efrain Miron was named to another newly created position as President, Strategy and Business Affairs, with a focus on the U.S. studio and portfolio companies.
Building out Sister’s U.S. operation under Holland has been a major priority as the company is plotting further expansion and a path to profitability.

Penelope Richmond's role was off-limits due to nepotism fears, but circumstances led to her debut in Girls5eva. Despite initial doubts, Fey's daughter Penelope impressed with her performance on Girls5eva. Tina Fey's daughter Penelope Richmond also appeared in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode.
Tina Fey initially did not want to give her daughter, Penelope Richmond, a prominent role on her hit Peacock sitcom, Girls5eva. The show follows the former members of a 90s girl group, who become popular again when their one hit song is sampled by an up-and-coming rapper. The sudden resurgence in popularity gives them the opportunity for a comeback, and they decide to take it. Both Tina Fey and her daughter, Penelope, appear in the show, though Tina Fey was initially reluctant for Penelope to appear.

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”
But Magnussen also excels at playing the bad guy, such as the tech billionaire who installs a tracking device in his ex-wife in “Made for Love” to a Nazi officer in “The Survivor.” But never more deliciously than in “Road House,” a reimaging of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The new version, hitting Amazon Prime Video this week, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?
The title “Girls5eva” refers to a fictitious girl group from the late-90s and early-aughts, as well as their breakout song (cause 4eva‘s too short!): Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Phillips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry). The group disbanded after fifth member Ashley (Ashley Park) drowned in an infinity pool, but 20 years later they’re making a comeback.
There was a time when “Girls5eva” would have been a surefire hit. It’s executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the team behind “30 Rock” and “Kimmy Schmidt,” the latter of...
