Since 1888, following the creation of the first-ever movie, the Roundhay Garden Scene by Louis Le Prince from Leeds, England, the technology used in the movie industry has upgraded drastically. Over time, developers devised ideas to create animated movies and stop-motion films, then came color television, the 3D era, and so on.

Christina Sandera, the companion of Clint Eastwood for the past decade, has died, the actor-director announced. She was 61.
“Christina was a lovely, caring woman, and I will miss her very much,” he said in a statement released Thursday night.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that no further information would be forthcoming. A representative from the Monterey County Health Department later told the New York Post that she died that day of a heart attack.
The couple were very quiet about their relationship.
They reportedly met when she was working as a hostess at Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and started dating in 2014.
A longtime Carmel resident, she accompanied the onetime Carmel mayor to the 2015 Academy Awards when American Sniper was up for six Oscars including best picture and on the red carpet for Sully (2016), The Mule (2018), The 15:17 to Paris (2018) and Richard Jewell (2019).

Tom Hanks is known for his good-guy characters in his films. Be it romantic comedies such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, or dramas such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia, the actor always plays roles that represent the morally right side of humanity. With his penchant for such sweet roles, he has been nicknamed the Dad of Hollywood.
However, Hanks reportedly does not have the need to stick to such roles. He recently played Elvis Presley’s antagonistic manager Col. Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which was different from his usual good-guy roles. He has also mentioned that he fought against decisions made by directors to portray him as a good guy, especially in a pivotal scene in his Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump.

Tom Hanks has played a hero multiple times, whether in Captain Phillips or as Woody from Toy Story. Each time, he’s managed to bring something new and meaningful to the idea of being a hero. Thus, when Clint Eastwood approached Tom Hanks, proposing that he take on the role of Sully, the real-life hero who safely landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009, Hanks found himself pausing before making a decision, in the 2016 film.

Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest contenders for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s smash hit “Barbie.” The Warner Bros. movie follows Margot Robbie‘s titular Barbie as she leaves Barbie Land for the real world in search of answers after suffering an existential crisis. Gosling’s performance as Ken has brought him plenty of plaudits, leading to a strong case for Best Supporting Actor in this year’s Oscars race.
However, this isn’t the first Oscars race Gosling has been in as he’s received two Academy Award nominations before. Let’s take a look back at them.
Gosling was first nominated in 2007 when he received a Best Actor notice for “Half Nelson,” which follows Gosling as a junior high school teacher with a drug habit. Gosling’s teacher forms a friendship with one of his students...

There's nothing Hollywood loves more than a snappy, propulsive, made-for-movies book premise from some of the most exciting authors around. Just in the last decade alone, we've seen writer Andy Weir parlay the breakout success of his debut work "The Martian" and its 2015 adaptation by director Ridley Scott into another upcoming movie deal, this time headlined by filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. More recently, "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn has had "Sharp Objects" turned into a major HBO series, while she teamed up with no less a talent than Steve McQueen to adapt the British TV series "Widows" into one of the most brilliant, under-appreciated thrillers of the last several years. Now, movie fans would be well advised to remember the name T.J. Newman, who appears ready to become the next big name-brand novelist around.

This Column Includes Some “Oppenheimer” Spoilers.
I don’t think I was as surprised as a lot of people were that “Barbie” broke out as such an even-better-than-expected megahit, hauling in $162 million domestic during opening weekend. It caught the zeitgeist wind just right and had some canny marketing might behind it. Say what you will about the moviegoing experience doing a slow fade, it can still get it together to generate a must-see happening. That’s what this was. At the screening I attended in Burbank on Saturday, there was a sense of giddy anticipation in the air. Moviegoers were posing in front of Barbie displays and getting into life-sized versions of Barbie doll packages. It was a hoot. The movie was fun, clever, beautiful to look at, superbly designed and agreeably goofy if at times a mite preachy.

“Beneath the Grass,” a drama about the criminal justice system and marijuana incarceration rates, will hit the market at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah and Jeff Kober will lead the film, which begins production next month in New Jersey. Paradigm is representing worldwide sales for the film.
“Beneath the Grass” is set in 2008, capturing both the economic recession and the “Yes We Can” summer, and follows a single Latina mother whose illegal marijuana business is jeopardized when her young son befriends the new neighbors, a young white boy and his police officer grandfather.
According to production research, in 2008, Latino people were four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people, while Black people were seven times more likely. Despite marijuana legalization in several states in the years since, the research explains, arrest rates have risen with racial disparities still prevalent.

Watching Jesus Revolution surge past $45 million in ticket sales for Lionsgate—matching or besting The Fabelmans, The Banshees Of Inisherin, Tár, Women Talking and Triangle Of Sadness, combined—it finally seems safe to say it. The faith-based audience is back.
Between Covid and the culture wars, it’s been a rough few years for those who make, promote and/or enjoy what are loosely called inspirational films. Sometimes the pictures are overtly religious, as with Jesus Revolution, the real-life story of a pastor and his counter-cultural following in the 1970s. Others are simply aspirational—moralistic, values-laden tales, like Creed III or Respect, about individuals striving to be more and better than they already are.
Either way, the uplift business was having tough time until Top Gun: Maverick broke through, at the strictly secular level, last year. The last explicitly religious film to top $40 million at the box office appears to have been Breakthrough,...
Others are simply aspirational—moralistic, values-laden tales, like Creed III or Respect, about individuals striving to be more and better than they already are.

, Jean-François Richet’s “Plane” becomes the most airworthy Gerard Butler vehicle this side of “Greenland” by answering a question that Clint Eastwood didn’t even have the courage to ask: What if, instead of ditching US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River like a total loser, Capt. Sully Sullenberger had been man enough to land that baby in the middle of a steroidal ’80s action movie? You know the kind! The sort where vaguely racist man-vs.-army spectacle that finds a couple of jacked-up English-speaking everymen forced to kill their way out of a sweltering foreign jungle full of indigenous militants, and climaxes with the bad guys loading the shoulder-mounted rocket-launchers that Southeast Asian henchmen always keep on hand in case Sylvester Stallone ever decides to reboot “Rambo” again.
No disrespect to Sully, but he probably wouldn’t have been able to save any of his passengers from Philippines’ lawless Jolo island cluster,...

The flood of sinister Christmas-themed films continues with The Apology, a thriller about Darlene Hagen. She’s a recovering alcoholic and, with some help from her best friend Gretchen, is hosting the family festivities for the first time in twenty years. But tonight she’s struggling to maintain that sobriety. Twenty years ago her daughter Sally disappeared. In the years since there has been explanation or evidence that might offer even a suggestion as to what happened to her. Now, with a storm whipping up outside her former brother-in-law Jack whom she hasn’t spoken to in nineteen years turns up with gifts and a dark secret.

As Elon Musk‘s second week running Twitter comes to a close, the social network is tilting toward outright anarchy.
The most visible problem arose from Musk’s harebrained idea of selling verification badges for 8 a month through the premium subscription Twitter Blue — without a mechanism for confirming the user’s identity. For years, you could trust that a blue check next to, for example, the name “Rudy W. Giuliani” indicated that the account was controlled by the former mayor of New York. MGM and United Artists Releasing have revealed their acting submissions for all of their titles, particularly “Bones and All,” “Till” and “Women Talking.”
“Women Talking,” written and directed by Sarah Polley, has opted to put Rooney Mara up in the best actress category while the rest of her female co-stars — Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod, Kate Hallett, Liv McNeil, August Winter, Kira Guloien and Shayla Brown — will campaign in supporting actress. The most prominent male actor in the film, Ben Whishaw, will be the only one campaigning for best supporting actor.
Mara enters a very stacked lead actress race that includes Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). The universal acclaim for the film adaptation of the popular book could help propel her into the fold, especially given her two prior nominations for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

James Cameron recently rewatched a fully remastered Avatar with his children, and it made him excited for the film’s upcoming rerelease in theaters.
His kids, like a lot of people since Avatar was first released in 2009, saw the film on streaming or on Blu-ray, instead of on a big screen. When they watched it in a theater with their father, they understood its grandeur a bit more, which Cameron said he hopes will be the case for everyone who sees it during its rerelease on Sept. 23.
“Young film fans never had the opportunity to see it in a movie theater,” Cameron said in an interview with The New York Times. “Even though they think they may have seen the film, they really haven’t seen it. And I was pleasantly surprised, not only at how well it holds up but how gorgeous...

When Dwayne Johnson takes the stage at San Diego Comic-Con next week, it would be truly seismic if he was to announce that Warner Bros was moving up the release date for its New Line/DC movie Black Adam from October 21 to earlier in the fall.
However, that’s not going to happen.
A pileup of big studio fare is amassing at post-production VFX houses, several distribution sources tell Deadline, which is causing many tentpoles to delay their release dates. The immediate result of this is a scarcity of tentpoles from mid-August to mid-October.
Unlike last September and October, which combined grossed just under 1 billion from a backlog of big pics during Covid like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, No Time to Die, Venom 2, Dune and Halloween Kills, blockbusters aren’t in abundance this autumn. Pre-pandemic, there’s typically at least one tentpole during September, while the first weekend of October has turned into a launchpad for comic book movies like Joker and the Venom franchise.
Such riches won’t exist this year, not until Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Ends arrives on October 14 and Black Adam the following weekend.
Sources say the postponement of films can also stem from Covid delays on productions, i.e., stoppages on set when crew or key cast members fall ill.
Warner Bros already announced in March that Black Adam was being pushed off a lucrative July 29 release date and moved to its current fall date. That joined a slew of other DC movies, including The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, originally scheduled for 2022 but pushed to next year.
On Monday, the Burbank, CA studio made it known that Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot was also a casualty of the pandemic’s post-production supply chain pileup. It pushed the New Line title from September 9 — the post-Labor Day weekend box office hotbed the studio created during the pre-pandemic for its horror fare — to April 21 next year.
Sony/Marvel’s animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was set to jump-start the first weekend of October. However, just before CinemaCon, the studio pushed the Lord Miller feature to next year as the film required a significant amount of work.
Following the last big tentpole of the summer, Sony’s Brad Pitt action movie Bullet Train on August 5, look for the weekend box office to ratchet down until mid-October.
However, let it be known to Wall Street cynics that the anticipated slowdown at the domestic box office isn’t due to waning consumer demand, but instead a lack of readily available marquee product.
Says one major studio distribution boss about the chasm between late summer and mid-fall: “It’s not because of strategy.” Another added: “If studios had product, they’d be releasing it.”
Disney/Marvel delivered what is arguably the last 100M+ opening this past weekend with Thor: Love and Thunder (144M as of today); we possibly won’t see one again until Black Panther: Wakanda Forever comes along November 11. While many in town worried that streaming would cannibalize moviegoing as we learned to live with the pandemic, that hasn’t happened despite the fact that we’ll end the year at around 7 billion at the domestic box office, a figure that’s still off from the pre-pandemic 11B-plus annual highs.
There’s a lot to celebrate right now at the box office: Thor: Love and Thunder repped the fifth 100M+ opening of the summer and sixth year-to-date. Since New York and Los Angeles movie theaters reopened in mid-March 2021, the monthly box office reached a pandemic high in June of 985.7M, per Comscore. Summer (the period of first weekend of May through July 10) at 2.27B reps 53 of the current 2022 year-to-date domestic B.O. of 4.2B.
The summer season is currently 12 off of the same period in 2019, but that gap could widen as we get into deep August. In regards to the legs of Thor: Love and Thunder, exhibition has been told that the MCU title will get a minimum of 45 days of theatrical before hitting Disney+. A final domestic that’s well north of 300M is conceivable for the Taika Waititi-directed movie.
The good news for exhibition is that there is at least one, sometimes two wide releases, booked every weekend from now through the first weekend of December. However, such fare is largely aimed at a specific demo or older adults.
Many motion picture studio executives have called for, greenlit and championed a diverse number of mid-budget and adult titles for the big screen — movies increasingly finding their way onto streamers. This autumn counts an abundance of movies aimed at adults, becoming a further litmus test as to whether such product can prevail. However, medium- and arthouse-sized movies have continually been hit and miss in the pandemic marketplace; the sole bright spots being Warner Bros’ Elvis. which is heading toward 100M stateside, and A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once which has cleared 67.6M.
Expect many adult and awards-bait movies getting glossy premieres at the fall film festival troika of Venice, Telluride and Toronto. Such launches cannot be ignored as critically acclaimed films coming out of the festivals can translate into great box office results. As an example, the splash of Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers at TIFF in 2019 saw that stripper caper notch an 87 certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes critics score and continue on to a 33.1M opening, and near 105M domestic final. Ditto for A Star Is Born in 2018, which premiered at Venice and TIFF and went on to a 42.9M opening, 215.3M final, eight Oscar noms and one win off a 90 certified fresh score.
A 20M-30M start for any of the adult-demo, mid-sized movies in the pipeline that include The Woman King (September 16), Don’t Worry Darling (September 23) and the Billy Eichner gay romantic comedy Bros (September 30) among others would indeed be a fantastic result.
To date, Elvis is largely the only adult drama to work on a massive scale — and this with a lengthy running time of 2 hours and 39 minutes. However, the success of that movie stemmed from being offered as counterprogramming in a summer’s sea of franchises like Top Gun: Maverick, which is approaching 600M, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (411M) and Jurassic World: Dominion (350.5M). Moviegoing is a business of reciprocity, and the marketing power of trailering a smaller movie such as Elvis on such tentpoles cannot be denied.
Unfortunately, we’re facing a near three-month theatrical schedule that feels like it’s all counterprogramming.

Distribution sources are saying there’s a chance that Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick could top the box office this weekend in its fifth session with 32 million, a 28 decline week over week.
This will easily send the Tom Cruise movie past the half-billion point at the domestic box office; the pic already is the actor’s highest grossing of all time with 900 million-plus worldwide. Top Gun 2 continued to lead advance ticket sales today in the U.S., I hear.
Should Top Gun 2 fly in with 30M+, it will soar above Warner Bros’ 85M Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis, which is eyeing 20M-plus, and Universal/Blumhouse’s Scott Derrickson-directed R-rated 16M horror film The Black Phone, which is spotting 15M–20M.
Mixed in we’ve got the third weekend of Jurassic World Dominion, which is looking at around 29M, off 51, and the second weekend of Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear, which...

Set to release on April 29th Runway 34, is directed, produced and stars Ajay Devgn. Joining in this intriguing film are Rakul Preet Singh, Boman Irani and Amitabh Bachchan.
Runway 34 tells the turbulent tale of Captain Vikrant Khanna, played by Ajay Devgn, a flying prodigy whose flight takes a stirring and mysterious trajectory after take-off from an international destination. Consequently, it follows the tenacious Narayan Vedant, played by Amitabh Bachchan, in his pursuit to uncover the truth.
Here are five reasons it will be a huge hit!
1. The Amitabh Bachchan-Ajay Devgn combo is lethal on screen. They were seen together years 24 years ago in Major Saab which Mr Bachchan’s friend Tinnu Anand had directed. Is it a coincidence that the duo played men in uniform in Major Saab and now in Runway 34?

Exclusive: Molly Bernard (Younger) has signed on to star in the indie Best Man Dead Man, marking the feature directorial debut of Verner Maldonado.
The film is set in the middle of nowhere, watching as a bachelor party turns into a night of murder and mystery when the best man ends up with a knife in his head. Friends quickly become suspects and only an eccentric, local private eye can solve the mystery. Everyone is asking the same thing: Who is the killer? And, more importantly, is it okay if we keep drinking?
Bernard will play Debra Carnegie, the lead detective with flowing red hair, purple trench coat, green umbrella, and personality to match it all. It’s as if David Bowie and a 1940s detective had a baby; a baby born to solve murders. David Gridley (The Last Ship), Ben Fernandez (Deputy), Jonny Cruz (Seis Manos), Dayana Rincon (The Last Ship...

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Uncharted.”]
Packed with the star power of Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, a massive $120 million budget, and a generous array of video games (and more!) to pull from for future outings, it seems like there’s nothing Sony and director Ruben Fleischer would love more than to build a globe-trotting, treasure-hunting cinematic franchise out of their first “Uncharted” film. After more than a decade in development, the immensely popular Naughty Dog video game is finally making its big screen debut in the form of an ostensible origin story, all the better to delight old fans and snag new ones. And, yes, to quite clearly set up for more films to come.
While a sequel to the film has not yet been announced, the film’s final moments sure behave like the start of a brand-new cinematic franchise, complete with a pair of post-credits scenes, typically reserved for superhero features and the like.

I try to go into every movie with open eyes and an open mind, but I confess that this Buddhist goal can be seriously tested by the prospect of sitting through a video-game movie. Sorry, but I’ve been burned too often — by “Super Mario Bros.”, by “Street Fighter” and “Mortal Kombat” and their sequels, by the 637 “Resident Evil” films, by the operatic death-plunge bombast of “Assassins’ Creed,” which looked like it was adapted from the 100 greatest prog-rock album covers. Are there good video-game movies? I enjoyed the 2018 reboot of “Tomb Raider.” The audiences for these films, who tend to be steeped in the games, would say that any number of them are good. But for those like me, who are looking at the movies as movies rather than live-action adjuncts, there can be a sludgy sameness to them: the kinetic fight-club visuals, the skeletal scripts, the “world-building” that starts...

NBC courted millennial and Gen-z demographics with its New Year’s Eve centerpiece, “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, Hosted by Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson.” The live special aired Friday, Dec. 31 from 10:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Et on NBC, with a livestream on Peacock.
The Miami-based event opened with Davidson and Cyrus rapping a lengthy parody version of Will Smith’s “Miami,” with Davidson joking that Bill Cosby and Kevin Spacey might show up to celebrate. Shots of fans moving their masks to the side to vape in the crowd immediately followed, setting the tone for the night.
After a short joint monologue with jokes about Covid and crying along to Cyrus’ songs (who hasn’t?!), the duo introduced an upbeat performance of “Tap In” and “Icy Chain” from Saweetie, complete with masked backup dancers. The music continued with a quick transition to Anitta performing “Faking Love,...

When Michael Rapaport signed on to play shoe mogul Steve Madden in a TV project based on Madden’s life, the pair soon realized they had a lot in common — and began trading ideas on how to actually get into business together. That has led to the formation of 212Works, a new production company that Rapaport and Madden have launched to develop film, TV and digital projects.
“We met and hit it off,” Rapaport says. “I have a lot of respect for what he accomplished in business. But getting to know him, I think we’re on the same page about creating content. And I find him very inspiring.”
Madden returns the compliment, noting that he’s been a fan of Rapaport going back to films like “Zebrahead” and “True Romance.” “Turn on the TV and he’s in every movie,” Madden says. “And he has a second life as a basketball fanatic extraordinaire.

Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” has already proven to be the biggest box office success of the current pandemic era. For the 38-year-old filmmaker, it’s a radical new chapter after his initial foray into the studio arena, when the response to his 2016 Lionsgate-backed “The Blair Witch Project” sequel left Wingard uncertain if he’d make another studio movie again.
The found footage project wasn’t a total bust — “Blair Witch” made a healthy $45 million compared to its $5 million budget — but it wasn’t the cash cow Lionsgate anticipated after the massive success of the original film. After its disappointing first weekend and mostly tepid reviews, Wingard and writer and frequent collaborator Simon Barrett took to Twitter to lament the film’s chilly reception, with some cheeky jabs at the weekend’s big winner, Clint Eastwood’s Tom Hanks-starring “Sully.” Wingard first tweeted, “Ya win some.
