In Timothy S. Susanin’s book Walt Before Mickey: Disney's Early Years, readers are treated to a portrait of the famous animator from age 17 through his rise to international stardom. Directed by first-time filmmaker Khoa Le, Walt Before Mickey reveals the struggles Disney faced in the early days at his animation studio in Kansas when it was known as “Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists.” Disney’s most popular character, Mickey Mouse, didn’t appear on film until 1929’s Plane Crazy, so when we say “early days,” we mean it. Thomas Ian Nicholas from American Pie portrays Disney, while Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder (whoa) takes on the role of brother Roy. According to Design Taxi, this is a straight-to-video affair...

I'm surprised that we haven't seen a really good biopic based on the life of Walt Disney. The closest thing we've gotten is his portrayal by Tom Hanks in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. There is an independent film coming though called Walt Before Mickey, which chronicles the early days of Walt's animation career. The film was directed by Juilliard graduate Khoa Le, and it's based on a 2011 book by Timothy Susanin called Walt before Mickey: Disney’s Early Years, 1919-1928. The feature stars Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie) as Walt, Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as his brother Roy, David Henrie plays an animator, and Jodie Sweetin (Full House) as Charlotte Disney.
This may seem like the kind of made for TV movie biopic that you'd see on Lifetime, but it's what we've got for now. I'm sure someday fans of Walt will get the amazing biopic we've all be waiting for.

The story of the young Walt Disney is coming to the screen - and here's the first trailer...
Digging way back into the story of Walt Disney is the upcoming movie, Walt Before Mickey. Based on the book of the same name, the film is focusing on the early struggles of Disney, back in the days when he was an animator and businessman, rather than the head of a hugely successful company. In fact, Walt Before Mickey is likely to focus on the studios he launched before he struck gold, eventually, with Disney.
Khoa Le has directed this one, from a script by Arthur L Bernstein and Armando Gutierrez. Playing Disney? That'd be Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie), with Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) playing his brother, Roy.
It's still unclear when we'll get this one, as it's yet to find a distributor. But here's the first trailer...

While audiences were served up a fantastic portrayal of a 1960s Walt Disney in last year’s Saving Mr. Banks, Khoa Le’s Walt Before Disney is set to serve up another helping of the legendary animator, only this time with a particular interest in the early, defining years of the artist’s career.
The period drama — largely based on Timothy S. Susanin’s nonfiction novel, Walt Before Mickey: Disney’s Early Years, 1919-1928 — will be situated in the 1920s, a time where Walt’s nascent career was hampered by several false starts and crushing disappointments.
Labelled as the “missing decade”, the film is set to chart Walt (played by American Pie’s Thomas Ian Nicholas) as he ventures from Missouri to California in the search of his dream — setting up four mediocre film studios along the way.
Joining Ian Nicholas for the tale is Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder...

Exclusive: Before he created Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney was an animator and businessman who spent a decade shrugging off failure in order to build the studio that would turn him into an icon. The indie period drama Walt Before Mickey chronicles nine years worth of these early struggles, with American Pie‘s Thomas Ian Nicholas playing the young and ambitious Disney and Napoleon Dynamite‘s Jon Heder as his brother Roy. Check out the trailer exclusively on Deadline.
Disney fans got a peek at the 1960s-era Walt in last year’s Saving Mr. Banks, but Walt Before Mickey offers up the pre-Depression Era “missing decade” during which he launched four studios and moved from Missouri to California, with varying degrees of success. Jodie Sweetin (Full House) and David Henrie (Wizards Of Waverly Place) also star for first-time feature helmer Khoa Le, who directs a script by Arthur L. Bernstein and Armando Gutierrez.

For those of you bummed by the lack of Academy love for Saving Mr. Banks or bummed that Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Walt Disney in that film comprised such a small part of the running time, you may like this following bit of news. Two biopics about Disney, known as the godfather of animation and the winningest person in Oscar history, are scheduled to come out in 2014. They are As Dreamers Do, which stars Olan Rogers as Disney and focuses on his childhood growing up in the Midwest and his aspirations to draw, and Walt Before Mickey, based on Timothy Susanin’s novel that focuses on his years as a young adult on the cusp of fame.
Walt Before Mickey, from director Ari Taub, seems like it will have an easier time finding an audience than the other biopic. Susanin’s book about the visionary’s early years has the...
