Some viewers compare "A Sign of Affection" to "A Silent Voice" because they both feature deaf characters. However, the two shows have distinct styles. "A Silent Voice" tackles heavy themes like depression and finding beauty in life, while "A Sign of Affection" offers a lighter experience that focuses on the daily life of a deaf person.
"A Sign of Affection" is a refreshing take on the shoujo genre, which doesn't have many new releases these days. It breaks away from clichés like the aloof male lead or overused reverse harem tropes. Instead, the story emphasizes the importance of genuine communication, particularly through sign language (which is interestingly portrayed with expressive facial features!).
This anime revolves around a sweet romance where the main character, Yuki, who is deaf, falls for a charming guy. While her deafness creates hurdles, the love interest makes a real effort to understand and support her needs, strengthening their bond. What truly elevates this show is its genuine portrayal. Forget cheesy tropes like love at first sight; Yuki grapples with her feelings realistically, seeking advice from her friends whenever needed.
Thanks to the meticulous research by author Suu Morishita, Yuki's deafness is depicted with exceptional accuracy, capturing the nuances of deaf culture. The directing is equally impressive, avoiding any mockery. Clever choices, like the gradual fading of sound in the opening scenes, subtly immerse viewers in Yuki's world and encourage empathy for her experiences.
Craving a sweet romance and a deeper look into deafness? "A Sign of Affection" delivers on both. This anime stands out as a top contender with its realistic portrayal of love and communication. It offers a refreshing perspective on the shoujo genre, making it a must-watch.

This romantic shojo series is centred on Yuki Itose, a deaf university student. She can lip read but also communicates using Japanese Sign Language and text. One day, on a train, she meets Itsuomi Nagi, a well-travelled fellow student, and they form a friendship that quickly blossoms into a romance as she helps him learn how to sign. Some drama is added to proceedings by Oshi, a childhood friend of Yuki's who has strong feelings for her and doesn't approve of Itsoumi.
I thought this was a really sweet series. It is very different from most anime series I've watched. It is rare to have a deaf character in any film or series let alone something animated. The story feels very real; there is little or no real danger and it is firmly grounded in the real world. While there are amusing moments there aren't obvious gags. The character designs are good as is the animation. The latter is particularly important as sign language requires far more work to animate that the lip flaps of spoken dialogue. Overall I'd recommend tthis to anime fans looking for something a bit different.

I watched entire 1st season it is fantastic its not just slapped together I swear entire time I watched it I smiled please check it out if you want good story telling and to feel good and smile all day. It has handsome lead men and beautiful your girls it's not a bunch of screaming kids or magic no super heroes just great story with young college people going about daily lives it has a different take on young love friendships. I like how beautiful lead man is all the characters are quite handsome I fell in love myself but main character just like my husband and I recall how I met him how cute my hubby was.
I watched the first episode, seeking a witty romance show. I found it to be captivating in both the artwork and character dynamics. I watched it again later with my wife and she enjoyed it as much as I did. It is aesthetically pleasing, charming, and (for lack of a better term) "cute." In fact, it is so cute I find myself doting over it (can't say I have ever experienced that before with a movie or tv show). I'm not even embarrassed to admit it-it's just an impactful show.
So far, I have found it to be delivering in the romance genre, and it is also quite funny. If you are looking for a show that is heartwarming, wholesome, and will have you melt with sheer delight, I would recommend this to you. I hope the series continues this momentum and other shows follow in its footsteps. Thank you.

I'm only 3 episodes in so far, but this is really good. It's nice to see a wholesome romance that's not In high school. Assuming this review is still up when the series finishes, my opinion stands.
Anyway, it's so cute. It's already up there with my favorites.
The art is very nice, and the show does a good job with allowing us to understand the sign language.
My only nitpick this the use of the "overprotective childhood best friend" trope, but it seems like that could be solved soon.
Back to positives, the character design is great, and it's not super fanservicey.
TLDR: it's super wholesome and pretty, give it a shot.

For someone who doesn't usually finish an anime series and doesn't read mangas... I cant get enough of this that I also read the manga and finished the whole series twice within a week. I hope everything goes well and more people will watch the show and love it. The series & anime was well written and really showed the emotions of the characters. The expressions shown were also really cute. Everyone's story was told and not just one sided. I really hope there would be another season. This is such a cute and simple love story. Like the story, it's not overly done. Honestly, I really loved it!! Also Itsuomi looks like Gojo. :)
I love the animation style. I like the premise, about a deaf girl and how she falls in love. But I feel that everything was too predictable. She liked the guy from ep 1, and you could tell he liked her too. The guy is portrayed handsome and perfect in every way, doing everything a girl would like in a cliche way (think of Edward in Twilight) to the point that he seems to have no depth in character.
I was interested in seeing the struggles of a deaf person, more of their worldview, but that was not explored too much, just in the background.
The main character Yuki is not shown to have any interests, hopes, goals, or thoughts that are not related to the guy she likes, Itsuomi. All she is shown thinking is focused on how the guy makes her feel, what she likes about him and how this is new to her. They don't even mention what she studies or much about her family and other relationships, or any personal struggles which made the story too shallow, her character too childish, and the love story not interesting.
I was more interested in the stories of the supporting characters, which were shown to be more complex, afraid of showing feelings or not knowing how to handle them, things that happened in their past, and we see them overcoming things. This made me relate to Oushi more, and made me think that if the story had been focused on him, his struggles and him liking and pursuing Yuki, it would have been more interesting.
Overall, it's somewhat entertaining, sweet, and the animation a joy to watch, but a little boring in the story.
For a more interesting and beautiful anime about a guy meeting a deaf girl and their struggles watch the movie A Silent Voice. I cried with that one.

The plot is very simple and depth. I'm so enjoying it as a low - drama romance that has a lot of refreshing perspective line.
This stories can reminds you- how To love and make a deep connection. I believe that affection can grow into love. A sign of affection or yubisaki to Renren have a depth plot - to make you learn how to show affection and reduce conflict. We can see this throught on Yuki and Itsuomi characters. The story show- how to face a realty live as a disability person. And finally, I'm very excited to continues watch if there have a session 2- to see Yuki and Itsuomi fullfill their dream together .

A very well made romantic comedy of a deaf girl and her beautiful and amazing boyfriend, she is very lucky tbh, he is the whole package, lets talk about her, she is just an average girl, cute of course but average, he deserves better but its ok, its his choice, lets talk about him instead, he is practically the perfect guy, every girl wants someone like him, charming m, smart, habdsome, he it's probably huge too
The other cast of characters all love him, he is just a perfect romantic male character in my humble opinion ok, lets talk about the other girl who has a crush on him, she is a more complete woman, i think they should be together instead of the main girl.

I did not enjoy this anime unfortunately. The characters both leads and side had no depth whatsoever. They were all shallow with no personalities in my opinion.
It seemed like all the characters life revolved around love, I know that this show is supposed to be romantic but there was literally just love nothing else to it. No plot. The female lead falls in love with the male lead after meeting each other two times only. Which I don't understand at all. The fl might've fell because of his looks because there is no way you could get to know a person only in two days. As for the male lead I wondered on whether he would've been interested in her if she was not deaf? Since that is what most of what they talk about and hint at when they meet up, it has basically become her whole personality.
The male leads personality can be summed up by acting nonchalant for no reason and not even smiling for most of the show even though it seems to me that he's enjoying life by traveling and achieving his dream, idk is it supposed to make him look cool?.
The show overall gave me unnecessary depressing energy as well. In my opinion, it was the kind of show you feel down after watching it. And it's not like they were discussing heavy topics but acted as if the plot they had going on was heavy. Not my cup of tea.

I can hardly type, I'm so excited from watching this anime. This was definitely an underrated show. The plot was basic but the way they went about telling it was brilliant! All the characters aren't jumbled together or overly focused on in their own stories. I love how it adapts to opposition or difficulty with patience and honest nervousness. That really brought out all the characters for their faults, good qualities and just regular human behavior.
The anime design is classic so it really makes it comfortable. Though the focus on lips wasn't to my liking but nothing is perfect. The only flaw it has is with the texting scenes,JUST WRITE IT OUT LIKE IN THE SUB OR CONTINUE TO HAVE THE ENGLISH CAST SPEAK THE WORDS!! Seriously I have to have one window with the English version and one with the subtitled version just to understand what was happening!!
As someone who genetically has a more likely chance of loosing my hearing and took American Sign Language, I really like how it didn't focus on the negative of not hearing. Instead it came hard at learning new things and finding beauty in just being able to communicate! That is a perspective I hope to continue using more! And I hope more people do to for everything!
10/10 this goes into my favorites list with Inuyasha (original series only), YuYu Hakusho & Rurouni Kenshin!

If you're looking for the usual, poorly written anime which relies merely on objectifying women, then this title isn't for you.
Though this is likely the best rom-com anime of the year. It was adorable from start to finish. The characters were beautifully drawn, with far more facial expression than you'd usually see in an anime. As an animator, I was impressed.
The plot was fresh and original as well. They didn't rely on the usual crutches of "hot springs" or other common gimmicks some anime's will utilize. Instead they masterfully told a story from a very unique point of view, that of a deaf woman and her struggle to live and be accepted in a normal life... and they did it brilliantly. Their depiction of the main character Yuki must have been written with first hand experience. Their empathy and perspective was truly original and I want more.
On par with "My Dress-Up Darling" (possibly even better). Hopefully we see another season, and soon.

Do you like a male character who touches the head of a woman he meets for the first time? You seem to like men who ignore distance and come closer to you. Authorship.
I hate series like this that don't make the drama more difficult. Then, details on the animation. The lip movements and the beautician's hand movements are excellent. Then I wonder why this was made into an animation!
There is none... Is it because there are more people watching the animation than the live-action version? Rival strength? Who is the enemy? If you want some drama in your sign language, I recommend the animated movie "koe no katachi."

I mean it's all good kinda cute but like a typical K-drama or Chinese dramas the female lead falls for the guy she just met who is good looking and she has a huge crush on right off the bat. And on the other there's this guy who is with her for most of her life always there for her maybe the only person who was living the life in a way to support her and make her feel normal and happy. But she didn't see any of this and just falls for the random guy who helps her once and he's the one. I mean the writers did a really bad job no character development for Oushi. If they did he should be the Male lead she should have fallen for him. Well there's more to the story maybe they'll do it soon make him fight for his love and make him show his true unrequited feelings his love to Yuki and make her realise that he's the one she should be with.
But tbh I don't really care about such female characters who ignores the love and affection of someone really close to them but they will surely notice every single thing about the guy they have a crush on even if they haven't done anything to deserve that attention from her.
So I'll be hoping for the introduction of a new female character maybe who is more pretty and adorable than Yuki of course and ends up with Oushi. Trust me the audience is half divided between Itsoumi and Oushi with whom should Yuki be with.
In my opinion it should be Oushi. I know many of you hate him for not being proactive and not making any move on Yuki but now she's with Itsoumi he's is trying to get between them. But trust me that's pretty reasonable how he's reacting or reacted before. Not everyone's the same who can easily share their feelings some even can't no matter what and I think that's the case with Oushi.
And trust if writers do a great job in developing his character you will see that he should be the one Yuki be with. Otherwise it's a messed up show I don't know I'll start hating one of the male leads but I am damn sure that I am starting to hate the female MC and will definitely hate her even more. I can't jsut like her because she can't talk and listen and show sympathy that she deserves that love I mean come on. If she can't even appreciate the one person who was with her this whole time she's really the dumbest of all.
