Barbie is officially on Netflix, and the movie is a great reminder to watch couple Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's first project together. Released in theaters in 2023, over a year later, Barbie has landed on Netflix's Top 10 Chart in the U.S. The film is a cultural phenomenon, reigniting nostalgic childhoods and beloved memories everywhere while tackling the complicated cultural perception of the iconic doll. Barbie has an epic cast of characters: led by Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera, the film became so successful that Mattel now has 45 movies in development based on their toys.
Gerwig and Baumbach co-wrote the Barbie script, while Gerwig directed it. However, this movie is not the first time Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have made a movie together. In fact, Gerwig and Baumbach's first film collaboration was the independent comedy-drama movie, Frances Ha. Frances Ha might seem entirely different from Barbie at first glance.

Greta Gerwig is reportedly working on a 'Barbie' sequel.Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach - who received an Oscar nomination for their work on the original script - are said to have come up with an idea for a second 'Barbie' movie.According to the Hollywood Reporter, it is still in the "early stages", but there have been some discussions with Warner Bros. However, reps for the studio and Gerwig and Baumbach have denied the reports.Back in October 2023, during a WGA West Q A moderated by Judd Apatow, Gerwig admitted she doesn't like to share her ideas "too early" as she worries it will "wreck what the movie is".She explained: "I find whenever I’ve shared ideas too early, they become bad, then the movie’s not going to be any good. I don’t like to talk about things too early or...

Oscar-nominated writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach reportedly have a concept for a sequel to Barbie, the $1.4 billion box office hit. However, representatives for Warner Bros. and the filmmakers have dismissed these claims, insisting there’s no sequel in development.
The massive success of Barbie made the idea of a sequel almost unavoidable. As the film painted theaters pink and raked in over a billion dollars globally, questions about a seuqel became inevitable.
Warner Bros. and Mattel expressed enthusiasm quickly, but the decision ultimately rested on Gerwig and Baumbach, the creative duo behind the first film. They made it clear they wouldn’t move forward without a compelling story to tell.
Gerwig, who directed Barbie, emphasized the importance of finding the right story. In March 2024, while accepting a Women of the Year honor from Time, she explained, “‘”My guiding principle is: What do I deeply love? If I can find the heart of the story,...

Since Lady Bird, all of Greta Gerwig’s movies have been adaptations — including her upcoming reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia — so after finishing her work on Narnia, she should go back to telling original stories. After Lady Bird put her on the map as one of the most exciting new voices in filmmaking, Gerwig got the chance to adapt one of her favorite novels for the screen: Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. When that proved to be an even bigger box office success, she was trusted with a blockbuster budget to direct Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie.
Barbie’s runaway box office success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2023, has secured Gerwig as one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. Next up, she’s adapting another one of her literary favorites — The Chronicles of Narnia — into a new franchise for Netflix. Gerwig is signed on to write and...

Over the past 15 years, writer, director, producer and actor Greta Gerwig has been one of the key figures in the independent film movement. After her early years as a star of the mumblecore film movement, Gerwig teamed up with her professional and life partner, writer/director Noah Baumbach, for a series of three films that broke through to general audiences, garnered widespread critical acclaim, and generated a Golden Globe nomination for Gerwig in “Frances Ha.”
But after she co-directed 2008’s romance “Nights and Weekends,” it seemed inevitable that Gerwig would return to the director’s chair, this time solo, and she did so in a spectacular fashion with her 2017 debut feature “Lady Bird.” Her coming-of-age story, set in Gerwig’s home town of Sacramento, earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, as well as two individual nominations for Gerwig for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The Dylar pill in White Noise takes away fear of death but causes terrifying hallucinations and isn't Fda approved. Noah Baumbach's adaptation delves deeper into post-modern philosophy, questioning truth and reality. The Dylar pill does not exist in real life; Don DeLillo's fictional drug symbolizes society's death obsession.
In Noah Baumbach's White Noise, the Dylar pill offers a unique and life-changing experience for those who decide to take it. White Noise is an adaptation of the 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo and is considered one of the prime examples of post-modern literature, making it something of prime rib for Baumbach, whose fascination with post-modernism and the varying nature of truth has been at the forefront of nearly all his films. His 2022 White Noise dives even deeper into the philosophy.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Barbie, a cultural phenomenon that became 2023’s highest-grossing film at $1.45 billion worldwide. It’s also got eight Oscar nominations, including for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s screenplay, which AMPAS put in the Adapted category despite other bodies — including the Writers Guild — clocking it as Original.
Either way, Barbie’s a doll, and the script boasts one of the most talked-about monologues in recent memory, delivered by America Ferrara’s Gloria in the film.
The story centers on Margot Robbie’s “stereotypical” Barbie, whose every day is the best day ever, until a glitch occurs which sends her to the real world (accompanied by Ryan Gosling’s Ken). There, they discover truths they’d never imagined — some hard, some misguided and some very poignant — before heading back to Barbie Land to set things straight.

Acclaimed director, writer, and actor Greta Gerwig is set to helm the next adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Gerwig, who has previously directed the Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird and Little Women, will bring her unique vision and style to the magical world of Narnia, starting with the first book in the series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The film, which is being produced by Netflix and Walden Media, will feature a diverse cast of newcomers and veterans, including Tilda Swinton as the White Witch, Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan, and David Oyelowo as the voice of Mr. Beaver. The roles of the four Pevensie children, who enter Narnia through a wardrobe and embark on an epic adventure to free the land from the witch’s eternal winter, have not been announced yet.

When the news broke that Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig would be writing a live-action "Barbie" film for Gerwig to direct, it certainly got a lot of double-takes. The power couple behind acclaimed indie dramedies like "Frances Ha" and "Mistress America" tackling a movie based on Mattel's iconic fashion doll turned multimedia property? It was one of those ideas that sounded just wild enough to work. And boy did it ever; thanks in part to the cultural phenomenon that was Barbenheimer, Gerwig's "Barbie" film is now a billion-dollar sensation -- one that even has a serious shot at scoring some love from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences come Oscar night 2024.
If you're one of those who doubted "Barbie" could ever work as a live-action film, even with talents like Baumbach and Gerwig at the helm, you can take comfort in knowing you're not alone. In fact,...

There may not be a funnier moment on screen this year than when Ryan Gosling yells “sublime!” off-screen in Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar box office smash “Barbie.”
That’s why Variety Awards Circuit Podcast had a pressing question that needed answering from the filmmaker herself: Who gets the credit for this brilliant moment?
“Ryan had the idea of [Ken] having a private moment that she [Barbie] can hear,” Gerwig reveals. “Because, of course, there’s no walls or privacy in Barbie Land. And then I will give myself credit, I came up with ‘sublime.’ I kept thinking, what’s the funniest word? I kept going back to ‘sublime.’ It’s the oddest word. But I let him do lots of things, because, why not? He did some very long sentences that he screamed. One was ‘Finally! My rainbow after the storm!’”
There are countless admirable and brilliant moments just like that throughout the Warner Bros. meta-comedy.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

On the heels of a staggeringly triumphant run with Barbie, the fantastical comedy which she co-wrote and directed for Warner Bros, Greta Gerwig has been appointed by the American Film Institute to serve as Guest Artistic Director of AFI Fest 2023.
An Oscar-nominated filmmaker known equally for her work as an actress, Gerwig joins a lineage of Guest Aristic Directors that also includes such titans as Pedro Almodóvar, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ava DuVernay, David Lynch and Agnès Varda. The 37th edition of the festival is set to take place October 25-29 in Los Angeles. Ticket bundles have already been made available for purchase, along with the full festival lineup, with individual tickets to go on sale tomorrow.
One half of the cultural phenomenon known as Barbenheimer, opposite Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Gerwig’s live-action Barbie has proven immensely popular with critics and moviegoers alike, setting numerous records while grossing over $1.4B worldwide.

Aporia (Jared Moshé)
What would your life be like if you didn’t go to work the day an accident would otherwise change everything? How much of your future might shift if you decide to simply alter your schedules to better accommodate picking up your child from school? One question seems bigger than the other, yet the second may actually impact what occurs next more. Because you can’t know for certain. And there aren’t any do-overs. Perhaps it’s better that way, to accept and move on rather than risk an even worse fate. Or is it? That’s what writer-director Jared Moshé seeks to contemplate with his grounded science fiction drama Aporia. – Jared M. (full review)

Christopher Nolan’s biopic “Oppenheimer” has already grossed over $270 million domestically, setting a number of records both for the filmmaker and in general. There’s been a lot of talk about its Oscar potential next year, so it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty in the below-the-line crafts categories where it is likely to get nominations, as well as its primary competition in those races.
The presence of “Dune: Part Two” — unless Warner Bros. moves it due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes — hangs over “Oppenheimer” like a dark Oscar cloud. The first “Dune” won six Oscars in early 2022, all in craft and technical categories, only missing out on two of its nominations there for Best Costume Design (which went to “Cruella“) and for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (which went to “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”). It’s fairly safe to presume that the finale of Denis Villeneuve...

Greta Gerwig's success with Barbie will give her the freedom to make any movies she wants in the future, proving indie filmmakers can become blockbuster directors without selling out. Gerwig's indie films, like Frances Ha and Lady Bird, gained mainstream success and made her a household name, setting her up for a massive studio budget for Barbie. Criticisms of Gerwig "selling out" to make Barbie reveal a double standard with blockbuster directors, as other successful directors started with indie films before moving on to big-budget projects.
Director Greta Gerwig has been accused of selling out after her work on Barbie, but she already shut her critics down back in 2019. Thanks to the blockbuster success of Barbie, Gerwig will surely have a blank check from studios to make whatever movies she wants in the future. She’s a rare director who’s popular with both critics and casual audiences, but...

Her second solo film,...

She only has three solo directorial efforts under her belt, but Greta Gerwig has quickly become one of the most highly respected filmmakers working today. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” was an instant teen classic upon release, and her 2019 adaptation of “Little Women” received similar rapturous acclaim, becoming the definitive film version of the classic book.
And in July, after an agonizing three year wait and acting a lead role in partner Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Gerwig came back to theaters as a director with one of the biggest films of the year. “Barbie” is a colorful studio comedy based on the classic dolls from Mattel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular Barbie and her heartthrob Ken. After years as an indie darling, Greta Gerwig has become a box office sensation. The filmmaker’s third directorial effort “Barbie” has become one of the biggest movies of 2023, posting a massive $155 million opening weekend. And although the film’s numerous pleasures — including fantastic performances from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a blockbuster pop soundtrack, and immaculate (pink!) production and costume design — would have likely helped it find fans regardless. Gerwig’s confident direction and strong voice as a filmmaker is what’s really made the movie into a cultural juggernaut.
“Barbie” and its massive success seems to signal a completely new era of Gerwig’s career. Her next project will see her venture even further into blockbuster filmmaking with two film adaptations of “The Chronicles of Narnia” for Netflix. The films will likely be even bigger than Barbie (at least as a matter of budget), signaling that Gerwig has...

The Barbenheimer phenomenon has marked the last few months leading up to this opening weekend in July with exponentially intense levels of excitement. After watching a heavy, haunting Oppenheimer (my review here), nothing like a light, fun Barbie to restore the standard mood... that is, if Greta Gerwig had, in fact, chosen to create a film without any substance. With the help of filmmaker Noah Baumbach (director of Gerwig's Frances Ha and Mistress America) as a co-writer on the script, the filmmaker responsible for memorable movies such as Lady Bird and Little Women takes advantage of the worldwide reach of the most popular doll in history, as well as a packed cast, to deliver one of the most surprising stories of the year. // Continue Reading ›...

Every night in Barbieland is “girls’ night,” or so goes the bedazzled legend of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The Barbies stay up late, talking, splashing in the pool, and the Kens go, well, wherever Kens go. What if one particular Ken (Ryan Gosling) wanted to stay over to make good on his promise of being Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) boyfriend? No can do. “The president is here!” Barbie insists. Ken goes home. Another day in paradise.
Gerwig’s vision of Barbieland is not so much a matriarchy but a Barbie-archy, a for-Barbie, by-Barbie culture in which every Barbie from President Barbie (Issa Rae) to Doctor Barbie (Hari Nef) to Writer Barbie is empowered to be the best Barbie she can be. The Barbies are Nobel Prize winners, astronauts, pilots. They’re happy garbagewomen and delivery workers. For the Barbies of Barbieland, their world is devoid of all that is miserable...

Greta Gerwig is looking forward to her biggest box-office hit yet as the director and writer of "Barbie," a gleefully quirky new take on the beloved brand. It's very much par for the course for Gerwig, who has made a career out of telling unusual, meaningful stories that examine life, love, and all the contradictory facets of femininity.
Today, Gerwig is probably best known as a director and a writer, with Oscar nominations for films like "Lady Bird" and "Little Women." What you might not know, though, is that she's actually an actress as well! In fact, she's starred in several of the movies she's written and directed throughout her career, as well as several others. For the most part, Gerwig's filmography leans towards indie films, and there are plenty of intriguing titles to take a look at.

Exclusive: Marriage Story filmmaker Noah Baumbach has set his next project, but it’s not for the screen.
We understand the writer-director is working on his first book, a memoir, which is currently untitled, and has been snapped up in what we hear was a highly competitive auction.
Knopf has taken North American rights. Jordan Pavlin, Knopf SVP and Editor-in-Chief acquired the book from Byrd Leavall and Albert Lee at United Talent Agency. Knopf will publish the book in hardcover, e-book, and in audio by Penguin Random House. UK Commonwealth rights were sold by Sophie Lambert of C&w on behalf of Byrd Leavell and Albert Lee, and acquired, at auction, by Jocasta Hamilton Publisher at John Murray.
Specific details about the book are being kept under wraps, but we understand the work will, in some way, chart the Barbie co-scribe’s life and career through key experiences and his relationship with cinema.

Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are starring in “Between the Temples,” a new film from writer and director Nathan Silver that’s being described as “an anxious comedy.” It’s the story of a cantor who is locked in a crisis of faith and finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student.

The 79th Venice Film Festival kicked off last night with a screening of White Noise, the latest film from writer/director Noah Baumbach who is known for films like Marriage Story and Mistress America.
White Noise is adapted from the 1985 postmodern novel by Dom DeLillo and stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Baumbach’s wife and frequent collaborator, Raffey Cassey and André Benjamin, aka André 3000 from OutKast.
Along with starring in this new film, Gerwig has been working as a prolific writer and director recently helming Little Women. She is also directing the much-hyped Barbie movie which she co-wrote with Baumbach. Barbie’s principal photography went from March to July 2022.

Oscar-nominated writer/director Noah Baumbach reunites with two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver and three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig (his real-life partner) for White Noise, based on the book by Don DeLillo. The one-minute teaser trailer doesn’t give away much; if you haven’t read the book, odds are you’ll have no better idea what the film’s about after watching the trailer than you did before pressing play.
Netflix hasn’t set a premiere date for the comedy/drama which is embarking on a festival run before its wide release. White Noise is the opening night film at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2022 and will screen at the New York Film Festival in September.

The first teaser for Noah Baumbach’s latest, White Noise, has arrived…and it’s an intense one.
The trailer, which debuted today courtesy of Netflix, teases martial issues, impending dread and an “airborne toxic event.”
Official plot synopsis: “At once hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic, White Noise dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.”
The cast of Noah Baumbach’s White Noise includes Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, André “3000” Benjamin, and Don Cheadle. Baumbach previously directed Driver in Marriage Story. He has also collaborated with Gerwig–his partner–on scripts for 2012’s Frances Ha and and 2015’s Mistress America, in addition to her co-starring in Greenberg, with a co-story by credit by Baumbach’s then-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh.

If you’ve ever wondered what “Stranger Things” would look like through the lens of “The Squid and the Whale” filmmaker Noah Baumbach, Netflix appears to be granting that wish. The first teaser trailer for the Oscar-nominated “Frances Ha” and “Marriage Story” writer/director’s new film “White Noise” has arrived, which finds Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig playing a married couple in the 1980s trying to keep their family safe from… something.
The teaser trailer is purposefully obtuse, as is the official logline. Based on the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo, the film is described as “at once hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic,” going on to say the story “dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.

Three-time Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach has returned with some familiar faces. The “Marriage Story” filmmaker has reunited with Adam Driver and his real-life partner, Greta Gerwig, for an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s sprawling novel “White Noise.” As with Baumbach’s previous two films, “The Meyerowitz Stories” and “Marriage Story,” Netflix will release the project on its platform. The streaming service unveiled the first trailer for “White Noise” on Thursday with a promise to debut the film later this year.
