Back in the ’80s, Brat Pack member Rob Lowe was notorious for being one of the hardest partiers in Hollywood, but that apparently didn’t preclude him from thinking about his future after acting. For a brief moment, that included a foray into music.
On the latest episode of his podcast, Literally! With Rob Lowe, the actor hosted The Ringer creator Bill Simmons, who recently produced a yacht rock documentary for HBO. This made it an appropriate time to share the story of being so coked up one night that he wound up in the studio with Toto.

Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson's poorly-reviewed holiday movie, which made $180 million at the box office, has become a global Netflix hit seven years after its release. Ask any two music fans what qualifies as yacht rock, and an argument is sure to ensue.
Does Steely Dan count? (Absolutely.) What about Hall & Oates?
In the late 1970s and early ’80s, the term “yacht rock” was not yet a thing. But everyone knew the music of the Doobie Brothers, Toto and Christopher Cross — who swept the 1980 Grammys with his shimmering ballad “Sailing.”
Those acts topped the charts in an era when slick production, smooth melodies and expert chops ruled the radio waves alongside the country-tinged hits of the Eagles. That would all change when MTV crashed the scene. Suddenly the likes of “What a Fool Believes” and “Africa” were consigned to the uncool “soft rock” heap. After the rise of Madonna and Michael Jackson, some of the earlier wave of musicians moved on to soundtracks, like Kenny Loggins with the “Top Gun” hit “Danger Zone.”

Most people who love reality shows would name Survivor as one of the best competition shows. That makes a lot of sense since Jeff Probst's beloved show has featured many great players, several fantastic seasons, and a lot of the winners have been very popular. However, even fans who are still figuring out which seasons to watch first recognize how unpredictable Survivor can be, as evidenced by the fact that players get medically evacuated.
Since Survivor is such a huge show and every player gets paid, it costs a lot of money to produce. Unfortunately for CBS, one of the show's most unpredictable and ridiculous mistakes also cost the network $200,000.

Michael Jackson and Madonna had so much in common during their peak years in the 1980s and 1990s but their songs were distinct from each others. Interestingly, they had hit songs with the same title several years apart. Of course, these two tracks have very different things to say about the same topic.
1 of Michael Jackson’s more sexual songs is a nice change of pace
Jackson was the King of Pop, but he knew how to make good rock music. In 1982, he released his soft-rock ballad “Human Nature,” which is likely the best ballad of his solo career. It sounds a bit like Toto’s “Africa,” which makes sense considering that it was co-written by Toto’s Steve Porcaro. However, the King of Pop had a far better vice than anyone in Toto, so “Human Nature” is better than “Africa” by a wide margin.
So, what did Jackson have to say about human nature?...

Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.
Were people just curious to see how bad it really is or did fans who watched Madame Web in theaters simply want to relive those many meme-worthy moments? We don't know. Either way, it's led to the movie being a hit on Netflix!
"It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee," Dakota Johnson...

Michael Jackson‘s Thriller had more classic hits than just about any other album. However, most of those hits did not reach No. 1. Even when the King of Pop made an epic music video, a chart-topper was not guaranteed.
1. ‘Thriller’
The fact that “Thriller” didn’t hit No. 1 feels bizarre. No other music video mattered so much to American culture and yet the tune only peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. If Billboard counted sales of the video’s VHS as single sales, “Thriller” definitely would have hit No. 1.
Jackson (and Vincent Price) got the last laugh on this one. Everybody loves “Thriller.” It’s not just a popular Halloween song, it’s the Halloween song. It certainly held up a lot better than “Monster Mash.” The song’s classic video has been spoofed by everyone from Britney Spears to “Weird Al” Yankovic.
2. ‘The Girl Is Mine’
Not every song deserves to hit No.

Chuck blends spy parody with workplace sitcom, plenty of laughs guaranteed. Chuck is a comedy with all the spy genre elements, balancing deadly missions with mundane life. Five seasons of Chuck filled with hilarious moments, still no confirmation for a Chuck movie.
For five seasons, Chuck blended spy parody with the core elements of a workplace sitcom to provide plenty of laughs. Chuck follows a college dropout, played by Zachary Levi, who inadvertently downloads a database full of government secrets directly into his brain. He is accompanied by two spy handlers, one from the CIA and one from the Nsa, as he is thrust into the world of high-profile espionage while struggling to keep his private life intact.
Chuck has all the chases, fights and political intrigue of the spy genre, but it's a comedy more than anything else. Chuck is a fish-out-of-water in the world of international intelligence, and...

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

Right after the huge success of "Wonder Woman" but also the horrible, awful, franchise-ending "Justice League," the first "Aquaman" was a pleasant surprise. James Wan's second superhero movie ("Furious 7" features as many if not more acts of superheroism) felt like a fresh jolt of energy, featuring an octopus that plays drums, Julie Andrews as a monster, and the masterpiece that is Pitbull's cover of Toto's "Africa." This is a pure James Wan joint, one that features a terrifying horror scene with deep-sea monsters. And it was a bonafide hit, becoming the highest-grossing Dceu movie.
Before the Dceu officially ends with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," /Film's own Jacob Hall talked to director James Wan about the making of the film, and why Wan was never interested in making a realistic take on the character. "I had to embrace the quirkiest side of this world,...

Aquaman is back, baby! And he actually has a baby with him now! With the brand new DC Universe fast approaching, "Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom" serves as the very last remaining project of the old DC Expanded Universe that started with "Man of Steel" back in 2013.
It is fitting, then, that the honor of closing out this version of a DC cinematic universe will fall on the single best character of this universe — Jason Momoa's Aquaman. The first "Aquaman" was an incredibly fun movie, one that presented a huge, visually rich world, lots of dumb fun, an octopus that plays drums, and the cinematic gift that is the scene where Aquaman heads to the Sahara Desert while a cover of Toto's "Africa" by Pitbull plays in the background. It's a big, dumb movie. It's the kind of movie that could only be made by James Wan, the...

Who’s that black private dick who’s a sex machine to all the chicks? Shaft!
Sad news to report this evening, with Deadline reporting that the legendary Richard Roundtree, who played the iconic private eye Shaft in five movies, is dead of pancreatic cancer at 81. Roundtree became a major star overnight in Gordon Parks’ landmark 1971 crime thriller, Shaft, with him starring as the titular private eye, John Shaft, who an underworld boss hires to find his missing daughter. The film was a smash hit, landing Roundtree a Golden Globe nomination for new star of the year and kicking his career into overdrive.
Notably, Shaft helped usher in the blaxploitation era. While it wasn’t the first movie of this genre, it was probably the first one produced by a major studio (MGM). The big box office take helped prove that there was an audience for black-led action movies and...

The writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, and the related issues of AI and the disruption of business models brought on by global streaming platforms, have dominated industry discussions this year, overshadowing debates over gender equity, diversity and inclusion. But the progress in those areas continues, noted by groups like the 50:50 Equality Project, a BBC initiative to boost onscreen representation that was started in 2017 and now counts some 150 partner organizations in nearly 30 countries. In its latest impact report, published Aug. 18, the Equality Project showed that nearly half (47 percent) of all participating organizations had hit the target of 50 percent female contributors, and more than three quarters (77 percent) featured at least 40 percent female contributions.
Worldwide progress at the executive level has been slower, but as The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the most powerful women in international television illustrates, female executives are established in the C-suites of many of the world’s most influential media companies.

Sheridan was originally slated to release season 5, part 2 of Yellowstone this summer. However, Lioness appears to have taken that premiere date, pushing the final episodes of Yellowstone even further out.

The “Old Guard” sequel starring Charlize Theron doesn’t even have an official release date, but a third installment may already be brewing. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” producer Marc Evans told me at the premiere of “The Mother,” Netflix’s new Jennifer Lopez action movie.
In “The Old Guard 2,” Theron reprises her role as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, and Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli return as gay couple Joe and Nicky. “You’re going to see more story of Joe and Nicky,” Evans assured.
After pandemic delays, filming began on the sequel, with Victoria Mahoney directing, about a year ago. Asked if Theron was contracted for a third movie, Evans would only say, “Charlize is a producer on the movie and deeply supportive of the franchise.”

Listen, we're all on the same page here. Betty White was, is, and always will be a national treasure. Whether you were weaned on "The Golden Girls" like me or found her through her later career work, mostly as the sweet yet foul-mouthed old lady in a raucous comedy of some sort, Betty White holds a special place in your heart.
One of her last handful of projects was a guest stint on "Community," Dan Harmon's under-appreciated pre-"Rick and Morty" show that has been thriving in streaming syndication lately where she played Anthropology Professor June Bauer, a character that played to all of Betty's strengths as a comic performer. She'd go from expertly lecturing to using a blow dart on a student or attacking Joel McHale's Jeff Winger with a complicated weapon to earn his respect and prove a larger point that we're stronger together than apart.

There have been 44 Survivor seasons, and though many of them have featured returning players, the majority of them have had only new players in the cast. Of the 44 Survivor seasons, there have been five all-star seasons with only returning players, and eight seasons with a mix of newbies and returnees. There have been a total of 31 seasons with all-new players.
Of course, some Survivor seasons are better than others, and it's time to discuss ten all-star new player installments that stand out for the right reasons. There are all-newbie seasons that are considered among the worst the show has produced. Some of those less-than-stellar installments include season 5 (Survivor: Thailand) and season 21 (Survivor: Nicaragua). On the other hand, there are several all-new player seasons that are peak Survivor, and should be considered must-watch TV.
Season 3 - Africa
Perhaps a controversial choice on a top 10 Survivor season list, 2001's Survivor: Africa isn't...

"We think he's made 47 films in 11 years." When "Africa's Tarantino" casts a New York film nerd as his next action hero, it's the beginning of a friendship that makes their no-budget studio world famous. But as their success grows, tensions flare and threaten everything they built. Drafthouse Films has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Once Upon a Time in Uganda, a story about a young filmmaker in Africa. Many of you have heard of and probably seen the movies made by Isaac Nabwana, all of his radical super low budget action flicks made in Uganda - watch them here on YouTube. This doc tells the story of how a Ugandan brickmaker was making action films, which got the attention of New York film programmer Alan Hofmanis. He helped them achieve worldwide fame, but that was only the start. More than just a story about Nabwana,...

“Air” music supervisor Andrea von Foerster received a music playlist from Ben Affleck titled 1984. “It was literally my childhood,” she says of the song collection that featured classic ’80s hits including “Africa” by Toto, “Candy Girl” by New Edition and “Jump” by Van Halen.
The Affleck-helmed film, set in that same year, navigates Nike’s bid to land NBA player Michael Jordan and explores his groundbreaking sponsorship deal with the company.
That playlist from the director and star of the film was the springboard for the 23 needle drops and 18 score cues “Air” features. In curating the film’s needle drops, von Foerster wasn’t just using music to play against what was on screen — “the music was used as a showcase to tell a story,” she says.
Her goal was to use music from the year authentically, visually and musically where the lyrics would often match what was being seen on-screen.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 2, “Rehearsal.”]
“This is not the end,” Logan shouts, near the end of his rabble-rousing speech on the Atn news floor. “I’m going to build something better — something faster, lighter, meaner, wilder, and I’m going to do it from in here, with you lot.”
Even before Logan (Brian Cox) wraps his fiery tirade by screaming, “You’re fucking pirates” at a room full of Manhattan reporters, it’s clear he’s won them over. The worried glances shared by Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) have given way to nodding heads and cautious smiles. In the end, applause breaks out, cheers can be heard, and Greg the Egg is grinning. But like so much of “Succession,” the end result doesn’t signify the truth of what’s transpired.
Absent all the brouhaha, Logan is grasping at straws. His impromptu speech is staged on boxes of copy paper. He’s...

After beginning his career as a model, the Benin-born actor found his first taste of success in Hollywood by landing a major role in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated 1997 epic “Amistad”.
Despite his co-star Anthony Hopkins getting a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Hounsou was left out of the running at the awards show.
“Yeah. Maybe I was early,” he said, looking back on that experience. “If my movies had come out today I definitely would have gotten an Oscar already.”
He would eventually find himself nominated for two Oscars, for Best Supporting Actor in 2002’s “In America”, and again...
